Anyone having an issue with MSN and FBChat since the last update (to dev mango)?

My Omnia 7 will only connect to them on WIFI now but it was fine before.

Has anyone ever had problems with their avatar not appearing in the Xbox Live Tile?? The avatar also doesn't appear in the Games Hub. It just happened recently and hasn't come back (I'm using a Samsung Focus).

I had that once.. I think it was a live services issue.. it didn't sign me in to live properly or something.

Is your gamertag a bunch of ????s ?

Try rebooting your phone if you haven't already.

I powered it on and off a few times and I still have the issue. My gamertag is the same as my neogaf handle. Probably a service issue like you said.

Edit: Fixed. If you edit your avatar from xbox live extras and save it returns back to the tile.

So I decided to downgrade back to NoDo. I couldn't deal with data loss after restoring when the beta ends (I stopped playing games because of this, and it's a primary use of my device).

What I forgot is how pleasant IE is with buttons (like favorites) up front. They need to implement a better solution on IE9.

Do you lose everything? For example, contacts you've added, text messages received etc?

Anyone on the Mango beta knows how to subscribe to a podcast not on the marketplace? I'm trying to subscribe to the Guardian Football Weekly but it's not on there.

Add the rss feed from the podcast you want to the Zune software on your PC.
Sync an episode to your phone.
Subscribe the podcast on your phone.

Hmm, that seems to kind of work, but I guess I'll wait for new episodes to see if it really does subscribe to it properly.

it works

podcasts = rss feeds

Microsoft is preparing the Zune Marketplace for Canada.
This purchase may sound silly to those in the United States but for us Canadians it’s pretty huge. The CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission) has strict policies that has – apparently until now – kept Microsoft at bay. I have actually been in contact with a lovely lady at the CRTC who has curtly informed me that the rules and restrictions are in place to “protect Canadian identity.”

Regardless, it seems as if Microsoft has finally gone through the proper channels, cut through the red tape and decided to start competing in a country other than the United States. The fact that a purchase was actually made means that Zune music Marketplace is undoubtedly coming to Canada. Exact timelines are still unknown, but it is coming.
Music downloads accessible in Canadian Zune Marketplace; release imminent?

Hey guys, managed to smash my Nexus One's screen last night so in the market for a new phone.

Had a look at the LG Optimus 7 (can get it for around £160 brand new), any of you own it? Worth going for at that price, or better to hold off for second gen hardware?

Cheers for any input!

A really weird thing happened to me yesterday. I went to charge my LG Optimus 7 and when it switched itself on the device reset and I lost everything. I thought this was a bit of an inconvenience but didn't really mind cause I'm in the developer beta. Once I went through the steps and put stuff back on the device, it worked fine. It was fairly late at this time, so I left it on coffee table and went to bed.

Now, I've got up this morning and neither the back button or the windows buttons are working. All other buttons are fine. Not sure what to do now. I sent a support ticket into MS in hopes that they know something about it.

I have it, it's a good phone and yes, the price is good. Mango runs very well on it, battery life is good (1500 mAh, baby) and it has physical buttons, which is a plus. So unless you want a front facing camera or a gyroscope, you should get it.

Weird. The only issues I had with Mango, were some spontaneous reboots. Never got that again after the hard reset last week.

Na no need for either of those things, cheers for the feedback!

So I was visiting Samsung's website when I saw

Wut? Where can I find the Ebook Hub?

I saw it here

I just got an HTC Arrive and moved on from my broken Palm Pre. I noticed that when you get a text it shows up on the lock screen at the top. Is there a way to turn this off like on the Palm Pre?

Great question. With some of the crap my friends send me, I might want that off sometimes as well.

I'll have to look, BUT if you didn't know you can swipe to the right and flick the message off the screen real fast.

Hmm, just got an update for my Omnia 7 [Orange, England] - anyone know what it's for?

Supposedly Samsung was putting out an update for Omnia devices that will allow them to update to Mango properly when it is released.

Yeah that's one of the reasons why I want to turn it off because I'm not near my phone sometimes. The Palm Pre you can turn it off but the notification light will turn on when you get a message.

Just got an Omnia. This phone is dope.

Now I hope the future WP updates will change some little frustrating things like the web browser in landscape mode.

Can someone recommend me some apps by the way ?

I already own a 360 and I recognize some XBLIG from there but the offer overall is quite poor and the prices are crazy (Tentacles is great though). There's a thread for these in the gaming section anyway iirc.

Non-game related apps that are worth the download ?

It's sad to see how many great free games fade into obsurity in the mobile app stores. Not to say that the current top free games aren't bad, but it would be nice to see some change in the rankings.

Also pretty annoyed that Xbox Live games are dominating the 'paid' section. I'm sure there are some great indie games out there, but I just can't find them.

There is a Windows Phone 7 Games thread in the Gaming side of GAF. Do a search for it. I got some really good recommendations from there. Stuff I would've never known existed. They really need to find a better way to surface the non-XBL stuff, some really good games are getting lost in the shuffle.

What's being reported is a host of kernel level improvements. Better battery life (some say 20% when not using wifi), better signal with less drops, fixed call volume and some are seeing a faster phone; scrolling, switching to home screen etc.

I got the update a few days ago and it definately seems better all round but this may be like a placebo, better because I've read it's supposed to be.

I'm not sure if it's an IE issue but the browser has horrible compression issues and pictures are pixelated and colors are off.

Is it just the phone I have, an HTC Arrive, or are all of them like this?

I noticed it when I wanted to save a background that looks great when viewed on my computer but on the phone looks horrible.

NoDo renders pictures in 16 bit color depth, because Silverlight 3 has performance problems with 32 bit. This is fixed in the upcoming Mango update, that brings Silverlight 4 support, which fixed this issue.

I forgot all about this! LOL

A related question. Is this system wide or just in IE?

Ok. I thought it was weird because older phones don't have this issue. That's good it's going to be fixed.

Mango supports dithering in native applications, but with the new SDK, 3rd party developers have the choice to render their apps in 32 bit, too.

New in Mango:
1) Internet Explorer 9 Mobile now supports color dithering. So there’s no more banding seen in images.
2) Color Dithering is now applied through-out the OS so there’s no more banding on the Lock-screen images, Bing daily images, Music+Video hub background image and Picture hub background image.
3) Improved color dithering in the Zune video player (and also enable for the MediaElement control)

New 32 bit support in the SDK:

Alright you guys, I'm really torn between getting the Samsung Omnia 7 or the Galaxy S2.
I don't really like Android but love the look of WP7 but the Galaxy seems to be the much better phone. Is it worth turning down a 8 MP camera and larger and better screen for a 5 MP camera and worse screen for a better looking UI?

You could wait till the new hardware comes out before making your choice.

I don't think that's an option really. For one I really need a smart phone as I still rocking an ancient Nokia phone. And the fact that I live in the Netherlands. WP7 came about 1-1.5 years after it was released in the US and we've only still got 3 phones available. So I doubt the new hardware will be released here anytime soon.

Then you don't want my opinion. I am biased toward WP7.
