I don't care about them, tbh. I just hope that LG, HTC and Samsung don't decide to just double-down on Android and ignore WP7 more than they already have. The phone announcements should be pretty telling. If its nothing but spinoff Android phones from them AGAIN, we'll have a good idea of what they think of WP7. I hope to see some quality stuff for this fall, I wish we had a date for the hardware unveilings.

Yeah, it's bullshit. I try to get support but I only get answers from community moderators who can't do anything about it. Zune keeps resizing my images to some crappy highly-compressed 960x540 image and my question at Microsoft Answers only had one reply from a mod who didn't really have any idea about what to do.

Along with the app update fiascos and complete lack of advertising you get the feeling that Microsoft doesn't care all that much about the platform.

We know that one of the Samsung's is basically an Android spin-off, so yeah. :lol LG's leaked phone didn't look hot either (neither did the Optimus 7, still love it <3) and HTC's Prime and Bresson (I think) were listed by some retailer, so basically we already know at least half of the line-up. It's easy not to care about Motorola, but they were Verizon's fuck buddy and it definitely would've helped WP.

i badly want the HTC prime to be good. also your right, it really is easy not to care about Motorola.

I don't think any Motorola phone but the original Droid was successful in the US actually. Maybe someone who lives there knows more. The last Motorola phone anyone I know owned was the Razr...

I can't think of any. Droid is still pretty popular.

Razr's were such shit. Sleek, but horrible quality.

I worked retail for a carrier for a bit in 2006/2007. I actively directed people away from Razrs to the Sony Ericsson W810 so they didn't come back needing repairs x.x

Droid is a Verizon term though. I mean, the most recent Droid is an HTC iirc? I think there were two Motorola Droids. The original and one of the newer ones.

HTC did the Droid Eris and Droid Incredible, Samsung the Droid Charge (a Galaxy S, afaik).

Dream or nightmare?

This is probably the best thing to happen to WP7 from a competitive standpoint in some time. Google has tossed it's hat into the hardware ring at the expense of its existing partners. They can try to spin this as an IP issue, but you don't need to buy an entire company to get your hands on its IP. It's about trying to get iPhone-like profit from its OS.

Google's gone hardware and I don't see it sitting too well with the other partners.
 
I don't think it'll be an issue with OEM's unless the Nexus line becomes Moto only, which Google has said won't be the case. We'll see, it's all about sales. If Moto surges and starts affecting their sales, they may take a harder look at WP7. Samsung and HTC are making good coin on Android right now, though.

Google seems to have communicated that this is more about patents than anything else to it's partners as they all said the same exact thing:

In any case Google has been releasing a flagship phone every year, I don't see partners being upset and jumping ship because that number will become higher. It's possible but I think WP7 is going to need a lot more than this news to make manufacturers give it more attention.

I doubt moto would bring positive PR to the windows phone.


Then again microsoft set standards. It would be pretty hard to fuck that up.

Daamn. Crazy how different the US is even though they're right next door. The only Motorola phone I remember anyone giving a shit about here was the Atrix and I know only one person who has even that.

One of my best friends just bought the Droid 3 last month when it hit. I definitely think they still hold some cache here in the US at least.

Yeah, very different markets! Like I think I mentioned in the other topic, Android's marketshare was 12% in March. It has definitely grown but I still wouldn't put it above 20% here yet. We're complete BlackBerry (42%) and iPhone (31%) territory. Microsoft held 5.1% and Symbian 6.4% back then.

I think part of the issue with Motorola and Canada is that because they're so chummy with Verizon, their big phones are CDMA so we never get them. Both of Canada's CDMA carriers dropped it after the iPhone 3GS so that they could sell that.

Not "filled" with bugs.. but they do exist.. a lot of people have/had trouble with livetiles not working anymore.

I've never personally had the issue on NoDo.. but a lot of people have.

Before Mango beta, most of my live tiles didn't work at all.

After upgrading, they worked without a hitch (well, most of them.. could never get TVShow working but I'm almost certain it's due to Mango issues/an update will probably fix it). Now that I remember, Rowi started bugging out in the end, surely because of Mango incompatibility.

Now that I'm back to NoDo (waiting for retail release), my Facebook and Rowi tiles have gone bonkers again. The only one working is Kik.

I'd say it's much more due to the fact that there aren't any compelling devices, brand new OS, and Apple and Android have the consumer buzz at the moment. It takes a certain breed to eschew the more established market leaders and go with an unknown quantity. Further, I'd wager that 99.9% of the population doesn't know what a 'live tile' even is.

Yep.. I would be voted "most likely to change OSes" among my friends if a poll was taken lol

I tend to get bored of things..

From 2007 until the present, I've had several devices and on different carriers..

1. June '07 OG iPhone - Sold on craigslist
2. July '08 iPhone 3G - sold to co-worker
3. November '09 - Motorola Droid (vzw) - Sold to roommate
4. July 2010 - Samsung Vibrant (T-Mo) - Sold on craigslist
5. Nov 8th 2010 - HTC HD7 (T-mo) - returned after 2 days
6. Nov 13th 2010 - Samsung Focus (AT&T) - Still own
7. Feb 2011 - Moto Atrix - returned after 4 days
8. May 2011 - Samsung Galaxy S II - Sold to a friend
9. June 2011 - Samsung Focus + Windows Phone Mango - current device

So.. yeah.. I tend to change devices and/or carriers often..

Yes, you read that correctly.. I sold my SGS II when I got mango on my focus..
 
So, they're cooking custom roms now? I don't even want to try and understand all the stuff on XDA right now.

Microsoft really needs to step their marketing up a notch. i know a few people who think WP7 will die just like HD DVD.

I'll be changing phones whenever I can get my hands on that samsung WP 7 device that they're not giving us the details on... if it's a 4.3" super amoled plus, I want it.. the primary thing I miss about the SGS II. Looking into that display is like gazing into the eyes of god.

I'm sticking with the OS.

imo, WP7 has the best UI and my focus with Mango is the most consistently fast and fluid interface I've ever had the pleasure of using.

After having 2 iphones and a total of 3 ipads (original wifi, wifi + 3g and ipad 2 ).. I care much less about applications than I used to. The integrated features of Windows Phone appeal to me much more than standard applications. It all feels cohesive in a way that just hasn't been done before.

Most of my WP7 apps are games.. I may get shop saavy when they (hopefully)update it for mango.. but there's not much else on my want list. The OS-level social network integration covers pretty much all I'd want it for.. if I need more than that, I can use a computer and the full website.

I don't get it. Coming from iPhone 5? Or you would choose it OVER an iPhone 5? In any case, I think that Samsung is at least a 4.3, possibly 4.5 Super Amoled Plus device, so that's the flagship phone right there out of the ones we've seen/read about.

Also, I can't get past the lock screen changes in terms of flickering/fading in Mango. I'm certain it has to do with the new ability to have it dynamically change with the artist or whatever. Some code in there has made the lock screen unstable.

I'm on the updated beta build and it actually seems to be getting worse. It started with some minor fade in when I turned the phone on. Then it started flickering in. Now sometimes it'll actually flash the start screen (or whatever view I was in last) for a split second before bringing up the lock screen. It's REALLY jarring and just breaks the beautiful flow of the OS when you have an issue that pops in unexpectedly EVERY TIME you hit the power button to engage it.

after using an iphone for so long (even if its only the 3G model). i wouldn't want to go back. its was fun at first, but then it just got real boring real fast. now i have more fun trying to scratch the screen then i do actually using the phone. not to say that iphones are boring, its just my experience with the device.

My mistake, I was tired. I meant coming from iPhone 4 and that I would choose it over iPhone 5, which from the rumors seems to be a minor bump.

I can see what you're saying. The OS has remained largely unchanged for a very long time and it's so simplistic that it's not very exciting. If it was a car it wouldn't be a car that's fun to drive but rather a car that's simply reliable and popular.

That being said I've been the guy who cheers for the underdog for far too long. Android and webOS were more exciting to use but there's always a fair share of frustration, disappointment and neglect when you're an early adopter or underdog supporter. I need WP7 to pick up in a few ways before I can jump ship.

Both are walking a fine line of balancing their closer relationships with their secondary relationships. I don't think phone manufacturers are as ticked off at Google as a few stories out there have implied, but I do think Google has to walk the finer line now that they own Moto, versus a business back scratch that MS and Nokia has. MS or Nokia can certainly back out if they really wanted; Google married Moto for the lingering family fortune.

I think Nokia's boost will bring Windows Phone into third place by next year/2013, and depending on how Google handles their first Moto produced/Google owned phone, will determine which platform is the better venture for all those companies. MS + Nokia has a ton of work to do to even dream of becoming as dominant as Google has right now in the market, but Google is up there with precarious patent footing. I hope they all do awesome and we see some amazing platforms grow and flourish. Patents Wars will probably muck things up though.
