That's not possible. You basically start the Bing app with it and with Mango, I'm not sure if I'd switch, even if I had the possibility. You can always pin the google page to your start screen or download the official "app" from the marketplace.
Ah, so there's no way to rebind another function to that icon? Oh well.

I just got a Samsung Focus today. It's a really nice phone.

I had a question, is there a way to change the search that pops up when I hit the little magnifying glass from Bing to Google?
You won't be asking for google when you get Mango. So much added to Bing in it.

Yeah, the search button is much more useful in Mango.

You get local scout, bing vision, bing music and of course search

Local scout tells you nearby restaurants, shops and attractions/entertainment (movie theaters + showtimes, cultural events, etc.) with reviews and map directions.

Bing vision recognizes DVDs, CDs and Book covers and points you to shops that carry it, prices, reviews, etc. It can also scan, OCR and translate text.

Bing Music can identify songs and give you the opportunity to purchase them on the marketplace.

lots of great built-in functions that make it worth having mapped to a button.

Is Mango the stock OS now? My phone does want to update :o

I need to get the few apps I had on my iPhone. The Google authenticator is a must get, and I want to see if there's a Blizzard authenticator. Worst case I just keep my iPhone in my desk drawer for that.

And for games, only ones I played were PopCap titles

Mango is the upcoming update.. hasn't been released to the public officially..

Right now it is officially only available to WP7 developers.. but there are alternate means to install it.

Your phone probably wants to update to 7392.. which is the nodo update + a ssl security patch.

Battle.net Mobile authenticator is available on the marketplace, so you're in luck there. Make sure you remove the iPhone one from your account before you try to add the one for WP7..

Woah when the fuck did Blizzard finally release a WP7 version? I won a physical authenticator on their twitter earlier in the year as they were giving them out weekly (probably costs less to give them out verses dealing with hacked accounts LOL), but it's nice to hear!!!

There's an unofficial Windows Mobile version available for legacy device users.

Works great.

I've been considering buying a Windows Phone but this was one of the things holding me back (I know, it's a dumb reason). I only found out last week that they made it available a month or two ago.

I'm currently considering upgrading this horrible Palm Centro I've had for years to a Samsung Focus. I know there might be new phones coming out in a month or two but the wait is killing me.

Do all of the orange colored At&t apps cost money to use? I was loading up the navigator one and upon reading the terms it seemed to imply a monthly fee -_-

Annoying that it was preloaded on the main screen and it has extra fees

I deleted all that shit. And yes. All fee driven.

I have been voicetexting like a maniac.

Just noticed something with my HD7 and it's starting to bug me, the screen seems to have a really poor refresh rate/pixel response time, even scrolling it pretty slowing results in ghosting/black smear in images.

Any other HD7 owners noticed this about their displays? Quite tempted to sell it on now even though I've had it only a few days.

Yeah, the screen on the HD7 is pretty crappy. It's a common issue across nearly all HD7s (apart from the HD7S, which has a S-LCD screen).

Might trade it in then, I can make around £30 profit on it so might as well rather than being stuck with a screen that is gonna annoy me for the next year.

I'll just keep looking around at other stuff, if I find a bargain again I'll get one, and if not I'll wait for the second gen hardware.

Looks like September 1st could be the date for some Mango.

After the initial rumors that Microsoft would unveil the new Mango handsets a day before IFA, HTC has now announced that they're holding an event on September 1 in London.

It’s been a while since we last met, so we thought that we’d invite you to come party - and most importantly see what’s next.

There will be the usual food, drinks, music and a few phone treats for you to enjoy.

It would be great to see you. If you’re planning on attending, please RSVP to let us know. Just remember that it’s an event for people over 18 and it’s on a first come, first served basis.

As ever you can always follow the conversation via our Twitter Tag: #HTCQB

Look forward to seeing you there!

The MyWireless App does not cost money to use and is a keeper. Uninstall the rest.

I've been playing the free "Alchemic Phone 7" for far too long.

Premise is simple; you have a basic list of element categories [fire, water, air] on the left and right hand sides of the screen. Each category contains elements; fire will have "fire", "heat", "magma" etc. in it. By combining two elements you can see whether they result in a new element.

The aim is to unlock every element.

Yeah, it is a pretty fun game. I'm only at 14%.

What's wrong with the Trophy?

I want one, but Sprint only offers the HTC Arrive (Trophy with a hardware slideout keyboard).

Doesn't it seem kind of silly to throw down for a first gen phone when the next wave is, supposedly, just weeks away?

Yea, if you buy a trophy now it seems like you're paying for last gen hardware at current gen price. Once iphone 5 gets released the trophy will look like a yack-back in comparison.

well, the windows phone challenge is over.

Molly doesn't love it. She likes it.. but it failed in a few areas that were important to her.

Lacking OS-wide text to speech (i.e. being able to compose e-mails with voice), lack of true OS-wide skydrive integration and the biggest mark against it was the poor attempt at turn-by-turn navigation.. where you have to touch the screen to have it read you the next direction.

So it seems like Mr. Watson and co are only batting 500 instead of 1000 and he is out $1000.

Something tells me he gave even those who liked it the $1000 too.... $1000 for the publicity it has gotten has been well worth it.

I did find some of her points just insane..... but they are some of the same things brought up by other reviewers.... they are trying to shoehorn their existing os into wp7 instead of thinking about the phone on its own (the zunepass and skydrive are good examples of that thinking)..... she really didn't understand why both of those services are VASTLY superior to the service she was previously using.

I still wonder if that stupid nav thing will be there in the final version that actually releases.

People are already trashing her.

I don't agree with her assessment, but her points are fair. Some of her initial problems were ignorance, but some helpful folks on twitter (myself included) helped her out.

She also lamented the inability to easily create playlists on the device.. which I have to admit doesn't make much sense.. it should be easy for them to implement.. instead of having to create them from "Now Playing".

Fanboys are not appreciated on any platform, imo.. she doesn't deserve to be trashed for her verdict, as her final complaints are actual problems and not ignorance on her part.

It just so happens that I don't care about those particular things, and I had already bought into microsoft's ecosystem with Xbox and Zune.. so that was additional value added to the platform for me that wasn't there for her.

That Molly girl is pretty weird, who want's to use speak to text for email? lol
And the complaining about Skydrive while she uses IE7 was pretty funny too.

I find it odd that what fell short for her were things that I will likely never ever care about in an OS. Overall she seems pretty impartial, though, and I still think that this is a net-win for WP.

She was running mango.. which uses IE9.

Android integrates speech to text into the keyboard itself.. so it is available anywhere that you want to enter text.. I could see missing that feature if you were used to having it. We all know that on-screen keyboards can sometimes be frustrating when you just want to find something fast in a search, etc.

I also agree that it's clunky that the only way to access sky drive is via the office hub if you're trying to access it for something other than documents or pictures. Though I guess if microsoft had intended you to be able to put and play music on there, they would have created a portion of the music + videos hub that linked to skydrive

Anyway, I'm done with the defensive posting. I'm just glad she took the challenge, even if microsoft didn't win it might give them some insight into what consumers think about various things.

I'd quite like that feature. Given Microsoft's history with speech I'd be surprised if this isn't included in the next or a future update.

Given how many people were talking that Microsoft was going to be late to the party again by not porting WP7 to tablets immediately, their decision now seems like such a intelligent decision in the retrospect of the non-iPad tablet situation right now huh?

I think eventually they're just going to merge Windows Phone 7/Windows 8 into one platform that runs on both phones and tablets, like iOS.

It would be like iOS if they just built it off from WP7, but Windows 8 is nothing like iOS. I don't think any Windows 8 tablets will be competing in the same media consumption device space or will be as good as them.

I have been very tempted to jump on the touch pad firesale..... but then I came to my senses and saw the resolution was not going to allow for the snap multitasking and thought better of it. Guess I will be waiting for w8 official release and getting the most badass launch device.

I see windows 8 being the basis for pretty much everything ms does with consumer devices going forward (phone, pc, tablet, tv).... It will be similar to ios but also cover the pc market (and not fragment things like ios/osx lion). The mobile hardware spec wise has come a very long way in matching the traditional pc hardware specs and then you get all the advantages of a mobile platform (superior batterylife, instant resume, etc). I really see the arm port of windows being a far bigger deal than most expect (also will allow windows8 to scale to the phone and tv).

I do wonder if they will go ahead and rename windows 8 though (esp since its codenamed windows 8 right now and normally codenames don't make it as the final name). Also seems like an opportunity for them to completely rebrand their os. A few like Tiles and Metro have been suggested and I quite like both of them (esp tiles since it makes sense in the same way windows did back in the day).

I am pretty sure if Microsoft wanted to make a better tablet, the would. Also i think if follow what RIM did with the playbook, which is make a different OS for the tablet but still a similar GUI to match the phone.

And MS isn't really late they're just really old. They had microsoft mobile but never did anything amazing with it.

Lastly microsoft is as cool as a 1$ bill. It's not like you don't want one. It's just that it's been around soo long.

As you get used to the phone you'll realize you wouldn't want to. It isn't simply a Bing vs Google web search thing - it's integrated into the OS contextually. If you're in mail, it searches mail ... in the app store, it searches for apps ... etc.

Even outside of context-sensitive searches, it's much more than a simple web search. The local pivot has 'quick cards' that give you reviews and instant mapping, phone access, etc. These features are heavily expanded in Mango as well.

Just got my Samsung Omnia 7 last week! Very happy with it so far, massive improvements for me from my old blackberry phone. Couldnt feel happier with the features and apps ! Can't stop playing with it, even at work.... until my boss had to say something about it.

Favourite apps so far is the news updates and the XBOX LIVE integration! Still stoked everytime I see my avatar on my main screen :)

Wonderful, wonderful phone !

In Mango it always launches the Bing app

Yup. With bing's new features, I especially appreciate the consistent behavior.

Before it was impossible to know what would happen when you hit the button.

Not every app used it contextually.

So, I'm reading that evil ATT is getting rid of the $10/1000msg plan and will offer only $20/unlimited text (or 20 cents per msg). I text sub-1000 a month, and I am not happy to pay $20. Is there an alternative option on Windows Phone like Google Voice?
