Oh I don't doubt that, but MS underestimated demand greatly. They're in a great position next year to flood the market with a lot of high-quality smartphones, but they will not get that chance if their hardware partners don't see WP7 as a opportunity more than a liability.Mr. Snrub said:I don't think it's going to blast out of the gate, but I think it will have legs. I do believe MS is "all in" and wouldn't be surprised if they just throw money at it to help keep it afloat and establish a position in the mobile world, like the original Xbox.

They need to stuff those channels a bit, because theyre already doing pretty well with the ads.

T Mobile will confirm tomorrow whether we will receive the stock on Friday or not. We have our fingers crossed.

Looks good with most colours though. Would be cool if it could randomly change.
Nope, most of the titles contain white pictures, so it wouldn't really work anyhow.Dural said:Can you do white tiles with a black background?

iPhone is pretty good for that. It lets you jump off 3G and use Edge for voice and data. Much better on your battery but slower speeds. I usually do that if it's a long day and my battery is low.2) This isn't a WP7 thing persay, but I wish I could go turn off 3g/wifi when I'm not using it to save battery, but still be able to send and receive test messages. I'm not sure how this would work on any phone though.
Ars hit the nail on the head. "Merely 40,000" is total bullshit considering that it's obviously a supply-driven problem, not a demand-driven problem, if that is indeed the accurate number.Charred Greyface said:

It's such a spectacular OS, but they need to do like Google and be SUPER aggressive about the updates. Android has come a LONG way just this year, and we may have gingerbread before the year is out. Last year, we were on 1.6, now we are super close to 2.3.
MS needs to move up their schedule. Why wait until next year to give us cut/paste, Flash, and tethering? The faster they iterate, the more evangelical the phone owners get, the more buzz it builds for the platform. And it would be great if they make a big deal out of the updates like Apple does. Build anticipation and release these awesome updates every 3 months. It's not like Redmond doesn't have the manpower.
They are going to pour money into this thing until it succeeds. Just like the xbox.VanMardigan said:I hope MS isn't disheartened if this thing doesn't sell like hotcakes out of the gate.
Even in NA the US and Canadian markets are very different. Mostly because of iPhone availability I think. It makes a big difference when the de facto consumer smartphone is on every major carrier vs just one.Brettison said:You also have to look at the GLOBAL numbers. The smart phone game isn't just about the NA launch.

If it's a supply driven problem, then it's a stupid decision to launch with so few units. Android devices sold about 4x as many devices that same day. Probably around 3x iPhones sold as well.dLMN8R said:Ars hit the nail on the head. outsidah said:WIFI you can turn off, but how you would expect to get text messages without a live connection. You can put the phone on airplane mode to disable the cell radio completely, but obviously you wont get texts or anything else.
You don't even need a data connection to get texts. A RAZR or cheap Nokia without Edge or 3G will still get texts, as will an iPhone if you turn the Network Data connection (both Edge and 3G) off.Brettison said:Well as someone else said I don't really need 3g speed just to get text. I just need basic low end data in case I get a text while my phone's locked in my pocket.

Not exactly supply constrained...
I totally agree I wouldn't worry about it though. Especially with all the positive feedback the platform has been getting!
Dural said:It can't be too hard to change the white text and pictures to black (or any other color for that matter) for use with white tiles. Plus it would look damn good. Are black tiles with a white background possible?
PS-Anyone else not a big fan of the always green Xbox tile? It really clashes with the other tiles.

I assume it'll route you back to the UK marketplace since that's what your id is set too, but don't quote me on that.kanugo said:Just a quick question: imagine my Xbox LIVE account is from the UK and I buy the WP7 in France. Will I still be able to buy games & apps?
Thanks.
Dell has responded to two launch day issues with the Windows Phone 7-powered Venue Pro, promising to provide affected customers with an exchange starting "at the end of next week." Specifically, some of the first phone shipments are said to have been plagued by a "software glitch during Dell's manufacturing process" that rendered them unable to connect to secure WiFi networks. Also addressed were the supposed "engineering sample" batteries, which had led to reports that the handsets themselves were not production units; Dell claims that in fact the batteries were mislabeled and should perform normally, but offered to swap out phones for any reason (as it should, considering the recent date of purchase).
Since the device was only sold at Microsoft retail stores at launch -- all five of them -- these issues are not affecting a huge customer base yet, so thankfully Dell caught them before the scheduled online launch come Monday. It does seem, however, that UK customers will still be subject to a delay based on component shortages, according to e-tailer Clove. We learned earlier this week that while the DVP does indeed have a microSD slot, it is inaccessible to users without voiding the handset's warranty.
