I don't think it's going to blast out of the gate, but I think it will have legs. I do believe MS is "all in" and wouldn't be surprised if they just throw money at it to help keep it afloat and establish a position in the mobile world, like the original Xbox.
Oh I don't doubt that, but MS underestimated demand greatly. They're in a great position next year to flood the market with a lot of high-quality smartphones, but they will not get that chance if their hardware partners don't see WP7 as a opportunity more than a liability.

They need to stuff those channels a bit, because theyre already doing pretty well with the ads.

i'm not a huge fan of the tiles yet, just haven't really used it... i can do things quicker the other method, but Zune is biggest plus for this device in my mind.

but many think it is very low stock. The focus is gorgeous

I'm still doubting that report. How reliable is the source? It sounds like the same story from the other day, recycled without any substantial info.

I guess I'm the only one with the Surround. Focus' screen was super nice though.

Nope. I picked up a Surround at launch too. Best Buy didn't come through on launch day, so I went to the AT&T retail location where they had both the Surround and the Focus up and running in demo stands.

The screen definitely isn't quite as nice as the one in the Focus, but is a huge improvement over my 3GS. I preferred the heft of the Surround and the way it felt in hand, though - the brushed metal bezel on the face and the rubberized/textured back are much nicer feeling than the glossy plastic of the Samsung, and that's what won me over. Despite the HTC giving up some RAM to the Samsung, I couldn't discern any performance deficits when I played with them both at the AT&T store, and I'm definitely happy with my purchase - response is super snappy and I'm really liking WP7.

The speakers may be a bit goofy, but they make the Surround an outstanding speakerphone. Additionally, it's kind of hilarious to prop it up and watch Netflix at my desk at the office with audio that isn't complete crap. The sound quality isn't amazing or anything, but it's much better than I'm used to from a phone.

I got the next-to last Surround they had at my AT&T retail location, despite arriving there at 10:15 AM, and they sold the last one and a Focus while I was checking out. Not sure if it was short-shipped, though.

So, which theme color are people preferring?

Lime for me.

T Mobile will confirm tomorrow whether we will receive the stock on Friday or not. We have our fingers crossed.

Got my fingers crossed too :D Come on T-Mobile I want my Omnia 7!

Red with black background.

Looks good with most colours though. Would be cool if it could randomly change.

Yeah, I agree, I went through all the colors today and none are really "ugly". Even the brown looks decent because the UI, in general, is so crisp.

I'm between blue and red, with the black background. I don't want to keep the stock blue, but it looks so damned good.

Wouldn't it be on the manufacturers to estimate demand and not Microsoft?

Nope, most of the titles contain white pictures, so it wouldn't really work anyhow.

Yeah a lot of the tiles all use white lettering. I guess they could do it if the had a back up black lettering, but sounds like extra hassle for small gain.

A few things after day 1...

The ehhh?

1) I wish we had more live tiles.... I don't even like miis or avatars but I lol'd seeing my goofy ass avatar with his lame night vision goggles pop up on my phone! :lol

Contrast that with the lame Samsung weather/news/stock app, and I'm like why can't this be a live tile?

2) This isn't a WP7 thing persay, but I wish I could go turn off 3g/wifi when I'm not using it to save battery, but still be able to send and receive test messages. I'm not sure how this would work on any phone though.

3) Might just be a personal issue, but the radio with the focus earbuds picks up jack in terms of radio stations around me.

Now the Good

1) So I downloaded the FB app today. I didn't yesterday cause it's kind of already integrated into the phone, but the app is better. Everything went smoothly, and I liked the fact that the Metro UI was in full play here.

2) I went and downloaded Flowerz cause I remember that was the free game everyone wsa able to download. Seemed descent, and the graphics popped in the screen.

3) Randomly decided to check out the AT&T apps just because figuring there wouldn't be anything there. Then I saw ilomilo, and was like woah I forgot about this. Oh shit it's free? PIMPTASTIC! I only played the 1st level, but even my I could give a fuck about my gamerscore ass was like PIMPTASTIC AGAIN when I got an achievement for the intro level! :lol :lol

4) The browser was actually IDK good? I had no problems what so ever with what little browsing I did. I didn't go to many crazy sites though that would have been flash or html5 heavy.

5) I even saw this on twitter from people saying MS is turning over stuff to the marketplace fast a fuck. I swear while it's still small, it feels like the marketplace is getting new shit by the hour. Now I'm not saying it's QUALITY (seriously do I need an app that just links me to the mobile page?). Fuck even google's app for search had no options. It was like why not just go to the webpage then?

Still good sign that MS isn't gonna try and hold shit up since they know it's the launch window and they need the marketplace to beef up ASAP!

I feel the same way, but I'd have to think that as more and more devs get more time with the device/SDK, there will be more live tiles.

iPhone is pretty good for that. It lets you jump off 3G and use Edge for voice and data. Much better on your battery but slower speeds. I usually do that if it's a long day and my battery is low.

Brettison,

Could you test a game like "The Harvest" and give us an idea of how quickly it loads?

The trial should be sufficient..

I found that on my HD7, loading my place in the game would take almost a minute or more.. enough time that the default screen timeout kicked in and locked the phone before it finished..

I'd be tempted to get the focus simply due to the onboard memory if it is faster than the HD7 was..

Ars hit the nail on the head. "Merely 40,000" is total bullshit considering that it's obviously a supply-driven problem, not a demand-driven problem, if that is indeed the accurate number.

To be fair I bought my Focus last night, and I was the 1st person at my AT&T to buy one...

Not exactly supply constrained...

I totally agree I wouldn't worry about it though. Especially with all the positive feedback the platform has been getting!

I hope MS isn't disheartened if this thing doesn't sell like hotcakes out of the gate. It's such a spectacular OS, but they need to do like Google and be SUPER aggressive about the updates. Android has come a LONG way just this year, and we may have gingerbread before the year is out. Last year, we were on 1.6, now we are super close to 2.3.

MS needs to move up their schedule. Why wait until next year to give us cut/paste, Flash, and tethering? The faster they iterate, the more evangelical the phone owners get, the more buzz it builds for the platform. And it would be great if they make a big deal out of the updates like Apple does. Build anticipation and release these awesome updates every 3 months. It's not like Redmond doesn't have the manpower.

To be fair if we get copy and paste and such in early January that is really only 2 months away. Considering they just launched it isn't that far. The rest of the shit needs to come out regularly though. None of this we give you an update in January and then it's July and we still haven't gotten a 2nd.

They are going to pour money into this thing until it succeeds. Just like the xbox.

You also have to look at the GLOBAL numbers. The smart phone game isn't just about the NA launch.
Even in NA the US and Canadian markets are very different. Mostly because of iPhone availability I think. It makes a big difference when the de facto consumer smartphone is on every major carrier vs just one.

This is where MS went wrong with the Zune IMO. They released the hardware/software and then went completely dark, so there's no momentum or discussion around their product until the next one. Pretty much nobody was talking about the Zune HD two weeks after launch.

I think they'll be much more agressive with updates to WP7 though simply because they're so far behind and need to catch up.

It can't be too hard to change the white text and pictures to black (or any other color for that matter) for use with white tiles. Plus it would look damn good. Are black tiles with a white background possible?

PS-Anyone else not a big fan of the always green Xbox tile? It really clashes with the other tiles.

If it's a supply driven problem, then it's a stupid decision to launch with so few units. Android devices sold about 4x as many devices that same day. Probably around 3x iPhones sold as well.

WIFI you can turn off, but how you would expect to get text messages without a live connection. You can put the phone on airplane mode to disable the cell radio completely, but obviously you wont get texts or anything else.

Well as someone else said I don't really need 3g speed just to get text. I just need basic low end data in case I get a text while my phone's locked in my pocket.

You don't even need a data connection to get texts. A RAZR or cheap Nokia without Edge or 3G will still get texts, as will an iPhone if you turn the Network Data connection (both Edge and 3G) off.

I tried this today, and I didn't get my texts on my focus when I turned my data off to save battery. As soon as I turned it back on boom I got 2 texts from my gf.

I weant to my local At&t at around 10am (I didn't know they open at 9) and there was two other person there looking for the phones. The salesperson went to get the Focus and came back shortly to tell us that they were sold out and they only got 2 in .. (wtf) but they have 2 surround left. I passed and went to check my Costco and they got 2 in also (technically 1, because the other 1 was demo unit). The one with slideout keyboard was a no show.

I am not sure how on launch day of their biggest relaunch of their mobile platform they send out 2 phones...

I don't mind it so much because I always associated Xbox with green. Though I wish we could customize the tiles or more tiles should be live tiles.

Edit: as for white tile, I think they sort of disppeared on Zune program because of the white background.

How are the battery life for those of you with Focus? I have to recharge at the end of the day and I don't use it that extensively but my work phone signal is poor and someone told me that the phone drain quickly because it constantly trying to look for singal (not sure if true).

Got my Omnia 7 from Orange last night. Not had much time to play with it yet, but man this is one sexy piece of kit, from the design to the OS.

Will post pics once i have a chance.

I gave up waiting for the venue pro, ordered an Omnia 7 from eBay (tmobile) for a bargain £380. Unlock that and I'm good to go, shame about the lack of being able to set MMS settings (for us sim switchers).

Really impressed with The Harvest so I bought it. What's up with the no password protection on purchases though? This means I have to keep an eye on my phone when letting others (kids) borrow it.

Wish it just had the option to save your password or not.

But MS doesn't usually work that way do they? Don't they usually do only one or two updates a year?

Couple of quick browser gripes.

• Really wish there was a quick way to get to the top of a page luke iOS.
• No folders for bookmarks?!

Just a quick question: imagine my Xbox LIVE account is from the UK and I buy the WP7 in France. Will I still be able to buy games & apps?

Thanks.

I assume it'll route you back to the UK marketplace since that's what your id is set too, but don't quote me on that.

Dell offering fix/exchanges for those with Venue Pro Wifi issues: http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/dell-cops-to-venue-pro-wifi-defect-offers-exchanges-11-19

Dell has responded to two launch day issues with the Windows Phone 7-powered Venue Pro, promising to provide affected customers with an exchange starting "at the end of next week." Specifically, some of the first phone shipments are said to have been plagued by a "software glitch during Dell's manufacturing process" that rendered them unable to connect to secure WiFi networks. Also addressed were the supposed "engineering sample" batteries, which had led to reports that the handsets themselves were not production units; Dell claims that in fact the batteries were mislabeled and should perform normally, but offered to swap out phones for any reason (as it should, considering the recent date of purchase).

Since the device was only sold at Microsoft retail stores at launch -- all five of them -- these issues are not affecting a huge customer base yet, so thankfully Dell caught them before the scheduled online launch come Monday. It does seem, however, that UK customers will still be subject to a delay based on component shortages, according to e-tailer Clove. We learned earlier this week that while the DVP does indeed have a microSD slot, it is inaccessible to users without voiding the handset's warranty.
