I got my Surround basically on launch and it's still going strong despite being dropped repeatedly. The speaker isn't really worth anything but it helps to give the phone a nice weight and feeling of solidity. The battery is halfway decent, too. Enough to last me all day listening to podcasts and web browsing at work. If he's looking for a cheap WP and isn't swayed by the screen on the Focus (if you even have that phone up there) I'd certainly recommend it at the right price.

Thanks for the info. We do have the Focus (what I use), but not for the carrier be is on.

You know what REALLY got me excited about cell phone technology five years ago? The iPhone. RIP Steve Jobs, without you there is no Windows Phone 7.

Sorry for the OT post guys.

Really?

My friend had the OG iPhone at launch and he showed it to me all proud. I was like *shrug*. The iPhone didn't do anything for me until the AppStore and even then it was an uphill battle with it's Windows 95 layout and app centric design. The thing reminded me of a NES. Which cartridge should I put in next? Okay, I'm done with that let's take the cartridge out and put in another.

I love the iPhone hardware and physical design, but the manner in which the operating system works appalls me.

I was an iPhone diehard until October of last year. Regardless of my lukewarm feelings towards the OS I fully respect what the platform has done to make WP7, Android and so many other platforms possible. Steve will be missed, even if I don't use any of his products.

I remember viewing videos of the cover flow, of the smooth transitional animations, of visual voicemail, etc. and being absolutely blown away. It's hard to remember how far we've come, but the phone I had when I watched those videos had absolute garbage games that I had to PAY MONTHLY to keep playing. The iPhone changed the game, for the better.

edit: my wife (girlfriend at the time) bought me a $500 PocketPC from Dell around that time, and I thought it was a super cool device, but trust me, Windows on mobile devices will never be anything like that again, and that's a wonderful thing from a user standpoint.

That's one thing I think Windows Phone needs, a cover flow show off feature. That's the first thing people showed me when they got their iPhones. It's probably the only time people used it, to show off their device to other people. Not an efficient way to find your music at all, but it did look pretty.

I have my Focus at 7720, I think it's the RTM version. Is it better if I flash back to stock and re-update everything again officially? I kinda don't have much time to do that stuff yet.

My Focus was acting really strange today, despite the display showing I had a 3G connection, and numerous restarts, I still had little to no data connection all day while at work. Especially annoying when I had to throw out a few emails finalizing the closing of my house. Never seen it act like that before. :(

So sad to here about Jobs. He defined where the industry went.

I didn't have to. I got an update on my Focus running RTM on AT&T that just cleaned it up, and then I got a 2nd update to the official release. I never had to actually roll back.

I agree with this. Without the introduction of the iPhone, the smartphone industry wouldn't be where it is today.

It is entirely possible than RIM would not be in the toilet and Microsoft wouldn't have felt the need to shake things up.

It was never about it doing something that other smartphones could not do.. it was about making it accessible to normal people.

I love voice texting, but for some reason it doesn't work with my car's bluetooth. Taking or making calls works fine. But when I try to voice text or do anything voice, I can't hear shit. Of course, it does work with my bluetooth earpiece, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. Anyone else with this kind of issue? Resolutions?

First, the facts. Chad confirmed there will eventually be multiple Windows Phone devices released in Canada, across multiple price points and on several carriers. There is no word as to AWS support at this time, but they have confirmed that Rogers, Telus and Bell are all sourcing Nokia Windows Phones. At the lowest price point, you can rest assured the specs will match other Windows Phone devices: Microsoft requires all of its hardware partners to equip their phones with at least an 800×480 pixel display, 1Ghz processor, 256MB RAM, 5MP camera and various sensors to ensure a consistent experience across the platform. Expect the high-end devices to have much more powerful internals.

Check out the LG Optimus 7 also. A much nicer phone IMO.

I can vouch for this, great phone and has no problems handling multiple tasks/games.

My only complaint would be that the ringer isn't that long and it doesn't vibrate and ring, it only vibrates then rings, which is a little annoying.

Oh and the battery sucks, it really does. You'll be lucky to get a day out of it before you need to recharge with heavy use, light use and you could go two days. If you do buy one, I recommend buying a 2400mh battery for it, you won't regret it.

My Omnia's been doing that, and my roommate sent in his Omnia a month ago for that (they just sent it back this weekend without doing anything to it).

It sucks, and is one more reason my next phone will not be a Samsung.

why on messaging it only shows only my fb contacts that are online and not my msn
is this by design or it should show msn contacts too?

Anyone else going to take advantage of the Walmart/T-mobile plan? It's the type of plan I've always wanted and never thought would happen.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447234

For 30 bucks a month you get:
100 minutes talk
Unlimited text and web on 4G up to 5gb of data before throttling down to 2G speeds (5 gigs is plenty for 99%)

It's just perfect. I've probably spent less than 100 mins talking per month for the last 6+ months. I just text nowadays. And also with Google Voice and other programs you can talk using your massive 5gb of data you won't even have to use minutes!

This is incredible plan. I'm so surprised about it. Only problem is that the phones suck so you'll have to buy an expensive T-mobile off-contract or unlocked one.

EDIT! Forgot to mention that it's month-to-month! Just wow

Explain your bold, sir. I know of the Family Plan work around and did that for the year that I had a GV # and a family plan, but I'm not aware of to what you're referring. Unless you mean G-Chat, but I'd imagine that wouldn't work very well.

http://www.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-800-and-samsung-monument-windows-phones-get-listed
Once again, Occasional Gamer's phone stats page reveals a few new Windows Phones.
This time around we see the Nokia 800--a device still shrouded in a bit of mystery--get a nickname: Lumia. Not much is known about the 800/Lumia series but it could very well be SeaRay with a different name--in fact, it jives nicely with the Nokia Sun on Orange, since Lumia="Art from light", ergo Sun . We're only expecting two, maybe three, Nokia Windows Phones this year meaning we could be seeing variants of the same core device (we're not even clear on the Sabre/SeaRay distinction yet). See also the Nokia 703.
The other phone is the Samsung Monument, which like the HTC Ultimate, sounds like an epic phone. Then again, Samsung's big device these days is the Galaxy SII which takes the form of the Focus S for Windows Phone. Could this be the Focus S for another carrier or just a whole new device? We're betting on the former but we'll look for more info.
more nokia and samsung phones is never a bad thing. i think i have my mind set on a large 4.5-5.0" screen, hope nokia or samsung offers one.

Since I now have the Zune music pass, would I be able to purchase the pre-paid Quantum, which was really cheap at Walmart and just use it as a Zune player for my wife?

Noticed that there's a WP7 push in Phones4U stores in the UK. A sign of MS finally taking the initiative and advertising their phones or the stores wanting to move old stock?

Is AT&T getting the Focus S? Depending on how much better that screen is, I might get that over the Titan.

I am pretty sure Focus S is going to Att along with HTC Titan. I am waiting on Nokia Aces to make my choice as to which one I am going to replace my Focus with.

Too bulky to be just an mp3 player.

It would really just sit in the car. I haven't been able to find any good deals on old Zunes (the ones I found have less storage than the Quantum and cost just as much or more).

You can have my Focus for a low price. I can't give this thing away. People are Craigslist are too oblivious to good phones and people on GAF back out. D:

Probably not low enough though. I don't want to spend more than $100. I do love the Focus though, which is what I use.

Are there any front-facing camera apps for videochatting out now?

Since there doesn't seem to be any physical keyboard Mango phones on the horizon, and WP7 seems to have an all touch future, I think i might as well hop aboard with the HTC Titan.

The rumored HTC Prime appears to have a physical keyboard. Not sure about the rest its specs though.

Well, a physical keyboard above 4". I think the Prime was rumored to have a 3.7, which is disappointing since there are 4.5" and 4.7" phones on the horizon.

Nokia Sun looks to be coming to France in the 46th week of the year (November 7th - 13th).

Samsung Omnia 7/Focus for the current gen and whatever Samsung and Nokia will announce this month.

I think it's too big and I still don't get why they removed the HD7's kickstand. It would actually make sense on the Titan.

The kickstand thing is something my friend pointed out, and I couldn't believe they took it out. Also, HTC are whores since they just announced the EXACT SAME PHONE, in white, for Android. Nokia can't get their phones on shelves soon enough.
