Can I use it without a carrier plan?
yep. if you buy any phone unlocked you're not obliged to use it with a carrier. I recommend getting a HD2- that way you can use windows phone7, android, meego, ubuntu, whatever really, on the same device.

will microsoft someday let us use ms points to buy apps?
have the said anything about why they dont support this until now?:(

I ask Live team about this at PAX and they told me go ask Windows Phone dev. My feeling is they probably want us to use the carrier as billing. You know after all Windows Phone is the most carrier friendly OS.

So far Xbox Live on Windows Phone is like token support at best. May be they are just waiting for Windows 8 and Apollo to fully intergrate Xbox into other devices.

Why are there games in the app section?

Not sure if its the phone or my carrier, but sometimes people complain their calls go straight to voicemail. I don't get their calls at all, only their voicemail. Anyone had similar problems?

Funnily enough my gf was saying this last night, if she calls me it's straight to voicemail, but if she calls back straight away she gets through.

No apps reached the sale/download rate of those games, I guess. But needs to be filtered for sure.
I'm thinking it might be due to any NoDo users out there, as the apps were contained within a single section.

Searching within the Marketplace is puzzling. Try searching for 'quote':
MarketplaceSearch2.png

A wallpaper app is the first result, and a stocks app is third. Why?

Say I know the name of the app - it's called 'Quote of the Day'. Easy to find if I search the exact words, right?

MarketplaceSearch.png

Yeah, apparently not. It should be the first result, but there it is at number 5. Shouldn't the actual name of the app have the priority, and then the tags/description? It's frustrating.

So if I plugged my phone in last night, and woke up to Battery Critically Low... is my battery fucked?

Similar thing happened before where my alarm went off and when I came back to my phone the battery was COMPLETLEY depleted despite being plugged into the laptop.

The first category of images in the background app is 'quotes'. Doesn't everyone's lock screen need a little inspiration?

Get a new one and see if things change.

I just might have to... It's been plugged in for an hour now, its showing the plugged in icon on the battery meter, and its still at 1% battery. When I disconnect it says Battery Critically Low...

And never mind... apparently it is a Battery issue considering I took my battery out and put it back in and now its showing me at the expected full charge.

Maybe the phone does a terrible job at reading the battery, idk.

It's been acting weird lately... not charging, showing I have no service...

Ok after looking into the games stuff I'm not sure I'm after a WP7 phone. I'm a dev and neither trying to be an XBLA game or being outcast as an indie game appeal to me at all. So stupid.

What did you find out? I'm kind of in the same boat and I'm thinking they are struggling to find games to push at the moment so it might be a good market to get into, from an exposure point of view if not financially.

Well, if that's where the money is, just go to the iPhone/Android. Seeing as you've already done the proper market research I don't really see what we can do here to convince you otherwise.

Basically it seems that Microsoft copied over their Xbox model. The premium games have XBLA integration built in, Microsoft needs to pick you to be eligible for this. There is a second tier of games with no XBLA integration, these get ranked lower in searches etc.

I think it should be up to the consumers to decide what is a premium product. I have no interest in XBLA integration for my game, it's neither suitable nor worth my time to add it, and I don't think it'd be easy to communicate with Microsoft being a one-person outfit. I equally don't want my game to be classed and seen as "second rate".

It's disappointing to me and am surprised Microsoft took this route, I'm now very unwilling to buy or develop for windows phone, despite some other fantastic things they have going for them.

I'm not having a go, just think it's an interesting discussion. Android and iOS have their own share of problems too. :)

Is this really the case? I'm not denying that Xbox Live games are given more exposure than regular games, but I'm guessing that's because there's an entire section solely for Xbox Live games, and not because they're shafting indie games. The search priority should be equal and the featured game list as it is now is a 50/50 split between Xbox Live/indie games.

I read it in a blog moaning about a dev's experience on WP7. It may not have been true or may no longer be true. I can't seem to find any confirmation or denial of this just doing a Google search, it's definitely important.

Maybe he meant the differentiation between XBL titles and "indy" games in the marketplace?

I don't see non-Live games as "second rate", but I guess some might. I have an even split on the two (about 20 of each) but some of the non-Live games are very good.

I agree that XBLA is a good consumer magnet, but if you're a good developer who puts more than five minutes into the games, than you don't need that XBLA crap (search for Elbert Perez). The bigger problem WP7 has right now, is XNA. XNA might be easy and simple and blah, but it can make porting for small time developers a lot harder.

Wow I'd never read that thing about only working with 'proven' developers before, seems totally counter-intuitive when you're telling people to code in XNA which is a huge teaching language. I'd at least hoped that they'd be trying to cream the top off of the indie stuff, but it seems they are really just looking for low risk stuff to justify the certification costs.

I wonder how much search ranking really comes into sales on a platform that's so far removed from the mainstream. I bet you could do a better job marketing completely outside of the ecosystem if you've got something good.

Ideally they'd do away with the additional certification completely on WP and just hand out game of the week type recommendations like Apple does. That seems like the best way to encourage everyone to try and build engaging experiences and not just marketing tools for console games.

They do this, but it's not nearly as fleshed out as Apple's featured section and Xbox Live games get quite a bit more exposure due to the slow release schedule, which means an XBL might stay 'featured' for weeks at a time before a new game comes along to replace it. Indie games usually don't stay in the spotlight for any longer than a couple of days.

Really all you are asking for them to do is what they should be doing a better job of on xbox.... promote the indie games more. They really do have some good stuff in there but need to give me a section of recommended indie games (and there are far more failures than hits in there which make it hard to find the good stuff in there)

That said I don't really mind the current system.... there is always something new coming on ios and very few games have had the staying power of an angry birds. I kinda prefer the game of the week or two stuff on wp7.... I don't need multiple new games every week. Id rather they go more into the console design on the phone vs the ios model. I would rather have bigger more involved games which would be more important that we only get one or two a week.... more games like the harvest and less burn the rope.

Concerning the link between "quote" and stocks:
Stock Quote
The highest price a potential buyer is willing to pay for a stock and the lowest price a potential seller is willing to receive. This is similar to the bid-ask spread, but the stock quote refers to the prices themselves, rather than the difference between them.
Otherwise, I fully agree with splitting Apps and Games, I've been asking this for the past year now (happy birthday WP7!). And yeah, name should have a high priority in searches. I tried searching for the app "forecast" last week.. it wasn't even in the top ten results IIRC.

t-mobile usa finally gives the htc radar a release date of november 2nd. att, your turn.
November will be a good month.

e: $99 is a pretty good price for the Radar 4G. Congrats for not fucking this up, TMo!

Need some more advice. The wife is looking for a phone and with Tmobile (US). Any ideas? The price for the Radar just got announced ($99) so I may suggest that, but curious if anyone has other ideas.

That happened to me once. Just pull it out and put it back in. Should be good.

I don't wanna say "I told you so"

Nokia appears to be planning a mass marketing campaign in the U.S. for 2012 according to Ad Age. Ad Age reports that the Finnish phone maker has enlisted a London based marketing group to promote its Windows Phones across Europe. Nokia is also searching for a marketing firm in the U.S. in the San Francisco area. Ad Age managed to obtain a copy of the brief where Nokia is focused on an “Amazing Everyday” marketing approach. “Hidden away in the everyday landscape are billions of little adventures,” the brief says. “And the new Nokia with Windows Phone makes it easier to find them, to take part in them and to share them.”

The lack of a significant marketing campaign in the U.S. this side of the holiday season could mean that Nokia isn’t ready to launch there just yet. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop admitted in a company earnings call last week that Nokia would launching in “select” markets initially. Elop revealed that the company plans to extend the N9′s industrial design to future Nokia products. Discussing this week’s launch plans Elop said the launch will be an “important milestone” for the company’s transition. “We will be launching in select countries later this quarter,” explained Elop. “We plan to systematically increase the number of countries, launch partners and products during the course of 2012.”

Tmo could put baby in the corner and never recommend it.
tmo did this with the HD7 but then again who could blame them as the display models I've seen had broken kickstands.

tmo needs to smarten up though and embrace WP cuz they aren't getting the iPhone and they need an android alternative.

They've already spoken about the situation.

T-Mobile thinks the iPhone is a good device and we've expressed our interest to Apple to offer it to our customers. Ultimately, it is Apple's decision. The issue remains that Apple has not developed a version of the iPhone with technology that works on our fast 3G and 4G networks. We believe a capable version of the iPhone for our 3G and 4G networks would offer an additional compelling option for our customers on a fast 4G network. However, the iPhone is not the only option to experience the benefit that smartphones offer.

T-Mobile's 4G smartphones stack up against competitive smartphones in terms of functionality, speed, features offered and overall experience – including the iPhone 4S. Reports continue of iPhones not operating well on some carrier networks, while our latest 4G smartphones offer many advantages vs. the iPhone 4S:

Capable of faster speeds
Bigger screens
Compelling service pricing
More advanced camera on the HTC Amaze 4G
More choice

We firmly believe that T-Mobile's portfolio will give any iPhone a run for its money. We offer the increased processing power and faster 4G speeds achieved by our fastest smartphones, the most advanced camera of any smartphone on the HTC Amaze 4G, and our industry-leading 4.52" super AMOLED display offered on the Samsung Galaxy S II.

With our portfolio of Android, Windows, and BlackBerry smartphones, fast 4G network, and competitively priced worry-free unlimited talk, text, and data plans, we believe it's a great time to be a T-Mobile customer.

Spoken like true losers, you know.
