Can you update us on how it perform after a week? All the bugs reports about the firmware scare me off. Thanks in advance.
Well the first (only?) bug I've found is that the screen turns off whenever I place a call and I can't get back visuals until after the call is disconnected. Also FYI the dell venue pro doesn't have the right WiFi chipset so it's never getting ability to tether. That's about it so far.

During an interview, Mr. Elop said Nokia was planning to push its smartphones into the United States, where it has struggled, early next year. He said Nokia was in advanced talks with the four major American operators, which together sell more than 90 percent of all cellphones in the country. Nokia’s new smartphones for the United States, Mr. Elop said, will run on high-speed 4G networks that use a technology called LTE, or Long Term Evolution, as well as on older 3G networks.

It will be nice if they can hit 4G on AT&T before Apple does

That seems like a terrible bug to have. Phone sure is pretty too bad Dell built such crappy product. My wife really want phone with real keyboard.

For me I will probably end up with Focus S as much as I really don't want another Samsung phone >< May be by the time I upgrade there will be better Nokia offer (900) next year.

I can't imagine why anyone would buy a Radar unless they REALLLLLY want a FFC (or if they are in the USA I guess). For a lower price, you get much better internals in the Lumia 710, and you get access to all of Nokia's apps and services.

USA.

How come I no longer have a working proximity sensor? As in when I'm calling and bring the phone to my face, the screen is still on and I keep ending calls.

^^^
He most likely means a mid-2012 public launch for developers

I knew it was a buggy device but this one seems like a firmware defect not a hardware defect :? yeah, this would be a dealbreaker for almost all users but I already intended to get another phone (Galaxy Nexus) and keep the DVP as an app device. The hardware keyboard is very nice but without arrow keys, or some other means of moving the cursor, I'm much faster at typing with the great WP7 software keyboard because my fingers are then closer to the text.

Sidenote: I'm really happy with the Office app. It handles powerpoints that my iPad can't (alas, keynote isn't standard yet). Is the Office app the best for taking notes? I'd like something that syncs with an app on my mac (without going through a mail client).

To be honest, I don't feel like a single last-gen phone with unsupported microSD capabilities alleviates the problem at all. If Microsoft isn't going to support expandable memory officially, they need to make sure that the manufacturers offer decent storage options like Apple does. This obviously hasn't happened, and for me it's one of the biggest issues in Windows Phone - one that will most probably affect the majority of the general public.

First of all, that's not what you said, you said:

I just cannot believe that there is only one WP7 device on the market with storage capabilities over 16GB

Which is just wrong. As for being unsupported, the slot is there for a reason, it's meant to be used. The Samsung website explains how to use it:

http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=344529

Microsoft also has a section dealing with SD cards on their website:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/sd-cards-and-my-phone.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2450831

There are limitations but as long as you understand them and follow the guidelines it works just fine.

Other than the unibody stuff the Focus S is better in every way.

Wonder if it will be a Rogers exclusive in Canada? I use Rogers, but I hope the Focus S is on other carriers. Rogers seems to give WP7 the least attention compared to Bell and Telus...maybe thats just me.

Probably.

Another update. Microsoft is holding an event on November 7th in New York for their new Mango phones from Samsung and HTC....

The event will be held in New York City on November 7 and appears to be related to Samsung’s Windows Phone devices. Microsoft sent invites to press and media outlets on Thursday inviting them to a “backstage” event on November 7. The invite (see below) features Samsung’s Focus Flash and Focus S devices alongside a HTC TITAN. Andy Lees and Joe Belfiore from Microsoft’s Windows Phone team will be on hand alongside a number of other Windows Phone team members. Microsoft is also hosting a number of partners too. Microsoft appears to be planning a “big” announcement as the word is highlighted on the invite with the text, “that’s not the only big thing Windows Phone has planned.”

I guess the phones will launch right after the event (rumor has it)..

About time. Hopefully all the Mango love isn't AT&T only.

Agreed. The only thing it looks like the Nokia has is battery life and pure sexiness.

Someone on XDA in the UK posted that Phones 4 U is expecting to sell out their entire launch allocation for preorders both in store and online. With some stores expecting iPhone-like launch lines...

no one is a bit concerned that nokia and MS had all this time to integrate their overlapping services, yet it hasn't been done? do they really expect us to have different tiles on our home screen for Bing maps, nokia maps, nokia drive, people, pulse, nokia music, and Zune? wtf.

according to nokia world interviews, such integration of overlapping services isn't even planned. response was more like, "we'll look at it."

They really haven't had that much time at all. I'm finding that people vastly underestimate the amount of time it takes to do software and hardware engineering tasks.

Not to mention, while a deal was announced in February, it wasn't until late April that the deal was finalized. They were probably able to get started on a phone, but I doubt any work on integrating services would start until the exact terms were detailed and agreed upon.

Nokia's real coming out will be Apollo, where they have had some time to work the background services and have actually had some influence on the direction of the platform.

nokia and microsoft finalized their partnership in late april. Mango was finished in late july. So you expected them to get organized to work together and intergrate their services into a project that was in the late stages of development? Ok....

nokia got handsomely paid, handover navteq and let MS handle the rest.

have you seen nokia pulse? shit is ugly. people bubbles taken from the N9, etc. if that's any indication, nokia phones are going to lose the cohesion that makes the platform so great.

I still love nokia hardware bit I'm deleting their services.

another customer may buy a nokia phone and ask, "why are there 2 damn music stores, 3 map applications, etc?"

Nokia music has support in 38 countries, Zune music is supported in what? 8, after expanding to Canada and Austrailia this year? It's not even comparable. Same goes with Bing vs Nokia Maps. Don't always think so US centric.

In short, Nokia Music is Nokia's answer to Zune not being available in many countries/regions. For instance, Nokia Music will be available in 38 territories on launch whereas Zune Music is only available in six. Likewise, the service offers a catalog of 50 million song tracks, meaning its comprehensive and it is finely tuned toward each region, culturally speaking. Hits in China will be offered/featured in China and likewise for England. Pretty smart.

nokia not being US centric enough is why their brand is dead here in the US.

thankfully, i can unpin with ease. my drama rant is over.

Why is that.

So it's the complete opposite to Android then? That's shit.

I'll try to re-brand through mfg and see what happens. My current network Giffgaff will never enable it as they are just a network, they don't sell phones or anything so don't have an update they can push and approve for it.
Indeed. You can neither tether nor set up MMS without specific carrier settings which is fucking retarded. I'm on Giff-Gaff and it became pretty obvious early on that my WP7 experience was going to be pretty tricky. Some people have emailed LG to request they add Giff-Gaff to the network setup app but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Microsoft made some pretty dumb concessions to the manufacturers and carriers.

just got some new skins and changed my screen saver to a smooth mirror type rather than my previous beat up bumpy anti reflective skin. its a big improvement in clarity and the skins give my year old HD7 a fresh look and feel. looks like I'll hold on to it for another year, until the Apollo phones are released.
