Last weekend Microsoft released Live SDK v5.0 to the public. Developers can take advantage of Live Connect API’s to build great apps that will be personalized to users taking advantage of SSO. Also you can make use of consumer’s huge SkyDrive storage. For example, if you are building a photo editing app, then giving an option to store the edited photo to SkyDrive is a great choice. Or if you are building a personal task management app, then ability to automatically sync with Hotmail tasks would be cool.

I'm so mad Windows Phone came so late to the Netherlands so I had to pick an Android phone. But now they are bombarding us with adds for WP but I still have to wait 2 years! WP looks so pretty and awesome :'(
 
Anybody else get prompted for an update today? (HTC HD7). I plugged in at work and it says I have an update but not really sure since this is a guest machine. Something to do with the companion app maybe?
 
In the demo of the xbox companion app on the official blog, Ben Rudolph is holding a Nokia phone with a ffc, a 4"+ amoled screen, and tactile buttons at the bottom. Why didn't I notice this before?

Edit, for the poster above me, the update brings internet sharing.

Thats pretty much the jest of it. Im sure they would strongarm Apple and other Manufacturers too, if they felt they could without possibly hurting their own bottom line.

Checked the video. You couldn't be more wrong. :P

It's the Lumia 710 with a 3.7" LCD screen, no FFC (it's the light sensor) and yes, tactical buttons.

You didn't really think they'd show an unannounced device in an app demo and no one would notice, right? ;)

Speaking of the 710, it's so weird that it got the full page promo on the US page, even though they didn't announce it for the US or any carrier (probably because it won't be available until January, but still).

Bleh the Companion App is showing up on the marketplace on my PC browser and I'm able to download it to my phone, but it doesn't propagate on to it nor does it show up on the marketplace app on my phone.

And btw pretty sure that's the Lumia 710. (edit: BLEH! Beaten by brotkasten)
 
Newb questions: Still interested in getting an HTC titan to tide me over until iphone 5.

How does the syncing work? Like syncing music/ringtones etc
Backing up contacts?
 
I wondered if it was the 710, but I'd never seen it in all black and the light sensor looked an awful lot like an FFC in the video.
 
Tried download the Xbox Companion app from the website but it was suppose to send me a text? I never got it and now I can't even download it from the Marketplace on my phone....

Edit - Never mind it installed itself. I thought the website said I would get a text. I'm not sure why Microsoft puts games and Xbox stuff inside the Xbox Live app.

music ringtones via zune,

contacts to the cloud, gmail / hotmail / yahoo

I did that too, got a notice not all apps could be downloaded over mobile and i may need to connect to wifi, and it appeared in the downloads.

It didn't send me a text when I did that. It just adds it to the download queue on your phone.

did you look in your games section? that's where it's saved.
 
Hmm I haven't gotten an HTC update today for my Titan. I also downloaded the Xbox Companion app from the marketplace website because it still isn't showing up on the marketplace on the phone, and I haven't gotten the message with the download link yet (been about 30 minutes).
 
Zune music got a major overhaul in the Xbox update. smart VJ is now included allowing streaming of music vids along with a slew of other new features. my $100 zunepass just paid for itself, IMO.

Ehh, really? It's the games hub. Not that hard to understand.

It's really not though.... this is just the non gaming bits of xbox live. There is no games integration, achievements, multiplayer, etc.

This is exactly what they should be doing (esp with zune). Put out apps on ios/android but keep the best versions on your own platforms. It also has the added benefit of introducing ios/android people to metro.

Well one of the main reasons i wanted a windows phone was the integration of xbox live (and as mentioned above adding to my gamerscore with games on the phone)

however..seeing this app and how smooth it runs and just everything about it, makes me want that as my OS now..

anyone have a link to a xbl profile that has achievements from xbox and phone on it

It's not about exclusive features. You won't see that from Microsoft and it was never really a Microsoft thing. What they're doing now (and should've done a long time ago) is "first and best on Windows". It's stupid not to cover other huge potential markets, but your own platform needs to have that premium feel. I can't kind the presentation anymore.

Kinda like Google does it with the Google apps. Google apps are available for iOS and other platforms, but if you want the full and best Google experience on a phone, get an Android device.
 
I think the companion app is neat. I wish it was a little faster though. Say you are switiching artists in Zune Music using the companion app it shouldn't have to launch Zune Music again.
