thats kinda sad.
And untrue.

Regardless of what it's called or whether it is an app or fully integrated, obviously the functionality is going to exist in Win 8. What's in a name?

Also, the idea that because Zune as a product may being going away means the team was automatically given their walking papers is ridiculous. Since they're going to incorporate the functionality into Win 8, it's only logical that they'd task at least some of the original team to work on it if they're available. And at a more general level, even if they weren't going to offer the functionality ... it's not like they'd automatically lay everyone off. This isn't a video game company on a shoestring budget. In big companies like this, products come and go and people get shuffled around to new stuff.

well i am not sad about the people getting laid off i knew they would get moved around. if this was true. but i was sad that zune might be no more. its currently my default player. if that was true. i know this industry runs on rumors where nothing is true.

MS's PR mantra about apps was:

"Not just apps but the same apps you find in iOS and Android that do more and work better on Windows Phone"

I would like the Lumnia 800 personally. If there was a way I could trade in my Omnia 7 and pay some cash on top I'd consider that.

And if it's replaced with something that has similar or better functionality ... why do you care if it's not called zune? I don't understand.

I'd still call it a mess, especially with an update being available but not being pushed to non branded handsets, or it has been and been stopped but no information about what is going on is as bad as a mess up, as non branded can't go to their carriers and say oi why are we not getting the update, but Europe is always forgotten with these things, like not being able to manually set MMS / Data settings for virtual operators.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Every phone got mango, so what's the problem?

lumia 900 is rumored to have 45 days of exclusivity.

still hope for a t-mobile release.

According to Thurrott’s source, after the 45 day window Nokia has a version in the wings that will work on T-Mobile, possibly coming out in the third quarter of this year. The “improved” version of the Lumia 900 will allegedly include an upgraded 12 megapixel camera, up from the current 8 megapixel camera currently gracing the AT&T variant.

hawt

not they name. i thought they where gonna phase out the zune media player and bring back media player 10 or something.

Zune as we know it is probably dead. We'll see with the W8 beta release what Microsoft has in the bag for us. A native Windows Phone sync solution would be really nice, with full device backup and all that jazz, but that won't happen.

believe? i mean native windows phone support seems like a no brainier. but this is microsoft, so yea.

I may have been foolishly naive, but I kinda expected that most apps were globally available. Now every other app seems to be US-only. Glympse, Dance Central, etc.

And where's the official Vimeo app?

Looking to switch to WP7 from android. Was it a difficult change for those that did? Also, should I wait to get a phone till later this year? I'm one of those that always wants the latest and greatest. I haven't looked into WP7 as much but I like that it's a "closed" platform. Options are great but before settling on my current G2 I was lost as to what to get. Is MS sticking with this strategy similar to the iOS?

I hope everything Windows based syncs together similar to Apple's strategy.

But what if its just another metro app?

Highly likely and I'd hate that in every possible way. I hate full screen apps and I can't think of one app, that is worth my full attention all the time. Except for games, of course, but that's something completely different.

shit. they better have skype built in then.

:lol In WP v.Next maybe, but not Windows 8.

Imagine, the VoIP solution with the biggest marketshare, pre-installed on the next version of the most used desktop OS. Seriously, Google and the EU would love this.

What would be the benefit of having it built in?
with a platform like windows. having something like "face time" built into the os would be awesome. free PC to PC calling. esp with the rise of tablet/laptop hybrids combine that with free PC to WP7 calling feature and you've got something magical. lol.

man, ill be old by then. j/k

If only google and their voice thing would love EU...

It's not only MS that fucks with us.

If a 12mp camera is all we get out of Nokia's Apollo phone I'll be really disappointed. The 8mp should be a lot better than it is, it seems to be really bad at adjusting the exposure in low light compared to the better galaxy phones and the iphone. It does take great day time shots though.

I got my Purity headphones, they are good, volume & call controls & mic all work as advertised. Sound is great, they use a flat cable that I guess is harder to tangle? I dunno, either way, glad I've got proper music & call controls on my 800 now, unsurprisingly, not at all worth what they charge for them though (I paid with vouchers so I don't feel that bad).

Lumia 900 for other carriers != Apollo phone

Not sure why you'd need more than 12 megapixels? They're only useful if your printing photographs poster size. After 10 mp its a wash and useless to have many more. The poor quality, low light photos are because the lens on the camera doesn't have a high enough aperature. A 2.2 or 2 or even 1.something would make for amazing low light photography.

Having a keyboard that disappears while using it is annoying, not being able to search my gmail account is frustrating, the org I work for is still using Exchange Server 2003 so replying and loosing the original text is a pain for colleagues.

An update (Update 7.10.8107.79) that fixes all of those is available, but there is no information about when it'll get pushed to my handset if ever as I'm not reliant on a carrier saying it's customers can have it as it's an unbranded handset, so why is that not a mess? If I was on a branded handset I could ask the carrier if they are going to ask for it, but as I'm carrier independent and the support team won't answer questions about updates for unbranded handsets when or where can i get that info?

The roll-out for the new update started last week. It's no secret that Microsoft is taking it a bit more slowly with the updates (again, a month for Mango). I flashed a Vodafone ROM on my Optimus 7 last week and immediately updated from 7004 to 8107.

Oh, and how about asking your manufacturer?
Phone manufacturers

If you have questions about the Zune software, syncing your phone with your PC, or phone updates, your phone manufacturer should have the answer.

e: Apparently, you can even download the 8107 update and install it like in the dark Windows Mobile or Android days, minus the destruction of all your data on your phone (because it's not a new ROM).

I'm on 7720, what was 7740 again?

Also, you mentioned you can't imagine running anything other than games in full screen mode, so how do you typically use your PC? I'm usually on my browser full screen or an app like Zune full screen, and I use the taskbar to switch between them. The only time I run apps side by side is if, for example, I'm copying something from one window to the next or writing something where I need the reference next to it. I don't know, I find that the snap feature in Windows 7 breaks the formatting of apps if I split screen them, so I avoid that and run them full screen. I don't know how else I would manage more than one app at a time, so maybe you can say how you use Windows differently.

7740 is the Exchange 2003 bugfix, I think.

Here's my setup:

E-Mail and WLM+Pidgin on the left monitor, Firefox and one of my main work tools (word, acrobat, indesign) in the middle, metrotwit (hey look, a metro style application as a windowed app! And here's the irony about that!) in fullscreen on the right monitor. (1280x1024)x(1920x1200)x(1280x1024)

Yes, I'm a power user and the .1%, but I don't care. I could live with the metro start menu with live tiles as animated background and windowed metro apps handled as normal applications, but right now I'll most likely hack the old startmenu back and get the metro style apps somehow to run in windowed mode.

Have they said how multi-monitor use is handled in W8? I use two monitors myself, and your setup looks like it would work if they implement multiple monitor support. You would use the split screen trick on the left one, full screen center, full screen right.

Anyway, that's OT, I'll look into updating to 7740 and then the keyboard fix update when I get back home. In the meantime, here's my totally uncalled for review of WP7 in a large US city:

Positives:

-Local Scout worked well for the most part and is quite useful for exploring the area
-I haven't felt a need to use my Nexus One here, WP7 has held up for note-taking, day-to-day use, music, navigation, social networks, etc.

Negatives:

-Network speeds. I'm averaging under 2mbps here, slower than San Juan. I know HSPA+ isn't real 4G, but come on. Now, we can blame this on AT&T, and I mostly do, but with forum reports that the Titan is being throttled compared to Android phones, I have to wonder if I'm getting the full HSPA+ speeds in Miami. Unfortunately, I don't have another phone to test against.

-Local Scout had one place that was no longer in business. Also, I didn't realize that it loads up different places almost every time you go in, so until just now I thought it only had like a dozen or so places in each category.

I meant we don't even need 12, not that it isn't enough of an upgrade. We should be getting dual-core, more ram, higher red screens and NFC in Apollo phones. I thought the 800 already had a 2.2 aperture? The lens seems fine as does the sensor because if I fiddle around I can get it working in most conditions, the software should be doing that for me though, that's what they need to improve.

Digital Zoom. Except for one Sony Ericsson camera, most phones don't have much in the way of Optical zoom. Digital zoom on a 16MP camera would zoom in 4X and still retain a decent 4MP image. That's what I hope the Titan II allows, at least.

So I just reset/wiped my phone so that I could get rid of this broken app that wouldn't go away and I could update it (which worked).

However, I notice there is now far less ringtones included than before, what happened? I don't want to use a different ringtone..

edit:

Ok I posted the "which worked" part a little to soon. It shows that there is an update available (HTC Update), but this update fails with Error 80180080. Which doesn't seem to mean anything.

So Microsoft's site says I should download the Windows Phone Support Tool and follow their instructions. This results in "The tool cannot recover this phone. Please contact technical support."

RAGE. No idea what to do now. Need tethering..

Why? I think it's one of the most visually appealing and nicely laid out media players out there? I just want some EQ options on it. Why do you want a major overhaul?

I wasn't talking visually.
