Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Well it's been roughly two weeks since I got my phone and I have to say I'm quite pleased. To be honest, I didn't have any high hopes and expected to be trading in the phone for an android phone but I'm really enjoying how sleek the OS is. Other than not having the ability to stop music (which you guys have helped me with), I haven't run into any deal breaking issues with the OS or phone so far *knocks on wood*. It would be nice to maybe have better app support, but hopefully that will come in due time.

Now my only concern is whether or not my phone will be included in future updates like apollo.

This NEEDS to happen for my one friend. He'll be eligible to upgrade around this time, but doesn't want to get a Trophy at this point, and rightfully so.

Probably a stupid question but does he not want a Trophy because it's an older phone or because there is something specifically wrong with the phone? It's the only one Verizon carries and I couldn't wait any longer since my last phone was on it's last legs and didn't work half the time, plus it was time for an upgrade/renewel. Did I make a mistake picking it up?

Honestly all of the current phones hardware wise have really similar specs. Sure some phones have slightly newer chipsets, but they are still all single core with only a VERY slight difference in core clock speed. They all have the same amount of RAM and screen resolution.

So hardware wise at least IMO there's no reason why every device for WP7 shouldn't get Apollo. Going beyond Apollo though could be muddy waters in terms of updates though.

Why the hell do Apps only "resume" when re-opened through the task switcher? Would be nice if opening it through the regular icon would do the same. Is this an per-app issue?

Because that is how WP multi-tasking works. Launching an app from the Home/App screen icon launches it as a new instance. Resuming it from the task switcher opens it's currently suspended instance.

Thanks, so it's for all apps. I hate it...
In my daily use it seems to work well, so I certainly don't hate it. I'm used to simply using the back button whenever I need to quickly get back to an app. On mobile devices with limited memory, it is always going to be a balancing act between the OS and the user managing resources.

I understand the restrictions, it's more a usability thing. Why can't it just resume the app if it's already available via the menu when I tap the icon of said app. If an instance is open - resume it, if not - open a new one.

Yeah, I can understand that... I guess I'm just used to only using the instance menu. If the app you launch is already loaded in memory (as one of the five latest apps), then it probably should just launch the instance.

It is a usability thing in Microsoft's point of view. They want to create a predictable behavior, where the app icon always launches a new instance. If you want to resume your old app, use the task switcher. I do think that it makes sense, but you can't change people's perception, when you're two years late to the party.

Well maybe I am used to the iOS thing, but it seems illogical to me the way it's handled. It's just painful to use IE with this, as you can't use the "history" when you launch a new instance.

But IE resumes the same instance even when you launch it from the app menu, the history never goes anywhere.

Yeah I was just thinking this after I made my earlier post. Hopefully by the time my phone can't be updated, I'll have another free/discounted upgrade lined up.

The behavior sucks because I shouldn't have to think whether an app is in the background or not. Background everything and launch from that state from any place in the OS. If the device is running low on free memory, kill processes starting from the end of the list.

There's really no obvious solution here. Both methods to handle this have their pros and cons. The WP way is very consistent and reliable, while it can cause unnecessary loading and maybe does not ideally address some use cases. On the other hand, the Android seems way lacks some of the consistency and demands more from the user.
In a recent review of Android by an iPhone user the author had a very negative opinion on how Android handled this. He wrote that at times he would enter an application that was still open from when he used it a couple of days prior to that and, to his confusion, the app would open in the state he left it and he wouldn't know where exactly in the app he was or how he had gotten there.

That being said there's definitely room for improvement. For one I think that the list of open applications in the task switcher should be a lot longer.
Ideally I'd like them to keep the app in memory as long as the available memory allows it, but still open the start screen of an app (maybe without displaying a splash screen first).
You'd still have the benefit of consistency and it would be a lot faster for common use cases.
Though you might lost some of that reliability. If an app had some issues entering it via the tile wouldn't actually restart it and there would be no easy way to reset the app...

Sounds good, didn't have the time to test it.

Isn't this how iPhone handles it as well? Aren't you taken to wherever it was in the app when you closed it? Unless of course, the app has been closed for memory reasons, which both iOS and Android do.

Dang I was working on an app that did this. Trouble I had was I was having to look through all of the directory structures in a person's SkyDrive for music files. Looks like this app handles that issue by making a person store them in the Zune music directory structure. Interesting.

That doesn't mean your app can't be better. Competition is always good and we need more apps like that.

How good is SkyDrive for music anyway? Aren't there some limitations like a max. file size?

Dunno if anybody else posted their impressions from CES here (just now getting back online after vegas last week) but man the lumia 900 was impressive when you actually got to hold it. It was by far the best phone I played with last week. If I can get a somewhat cheap upgrade I'll move to it.

Also I was concerned about what looked like a border around the edge of the screen to the body of the phone (was going to be separated unlike the 800) but when I held it I did not notice it at all.... felt seamless.

But the glass is not curved!

I think this was the review I read: http://shawnblanc.net/2011/12/android-galaxy-nexus-review/

When launching an app, nearly every one would place me on the screen that I left it. I would get to an app (such as the settings or email or Twitter) and not be at the “first” screen in that app. If it had been a day or so since last coming into the app I may not have known exactly why I wasn’t looking at the starting screen for that app and so I would simply hit the Back button and see where that got me. Sometimes it would kick me back to the Home screen. Sometimes into another app. And sometimes to the previous page in the app. I’m still not sure I know what the Back button does exactly.

What's your current phone though that you'd drop to move to this?

Guess it didn't matter.... It felt completely seamless and didn't even notice the glass was not curved.

Launch day focus... was going to wait until apollo but after holding the 900 don't think I will be able to wait that long. It was kinda funny though how cheap my phone felt after holding the nokia.... also went by samsung's booth after and even the galaxy nexus feels very cheap next to the lumia 900.

Any features you would like in a streaming app?

I hate that Zune doesn't buffer up the next track in a playlist when streaming. If you could make it start to download the new song before the current one is done playing that'd be a major improvement, IMO.

Hopefully someone can answer this question.

My girlfriend is currently using a cheap Nokia phone on Rogers here in Canada with no data connection and a very barebones plan. I want to pick her up a Samsung Focus for her birthday since she loves mine. I tried her SIM card in my phone and calling and texting works. Obviously she won't have a data connection when she's not near Wi-Fi, and that's fine since she won't use it, but is there anything else on the phone that won't work with her plan?

Obviously Rogers would want me to add a data plan to her sub but I really don't want to.

like what?

Just make sure the data connection is disabled.

Well like all the Facebook integration, zune etc. I assume all that will just update when she's near Wi-Fi (which is 95% of the time)?

Would it be possible to pull the artist bio and pics from allmusic.com? I'm sure international users would like to have this feature as well. Oh, and while you're at it, a Zune HD-ish screen saver would be awesome.

Basically, recreate the Zune HD as a streaming app.

Thank you.

Don't listen to me, nobody else wants that stuff

My phone keeps reseting itself randomly. I think it's on it's last legs...

Had this problem with a HTC Mozart only a few months after having it, it slowly got worse and worse- tried pretty much everything to get rid of it. It ended up getting to the point where the phone was un usuable so it had to go back to Telstra, first time they switched the mainboard, but gave me the problem of having a dodgy touch screen and then the power port also didn't work- also the original problem was still there, second time they replaced the mainboard again and updated everything and the main problem was gone, and so was the battery port not working- but the touch screen problem was still there- and still there to this day.

Should work, just remember the phone turns off WiFi when the screen is locked (and it is not plugged in) in order to save battery.

I wish the updates were out of the carriers hands. AT&T is taking forever.

It's the one problem with having a "consumer's desires come first" mindset. Previously, during WinMo, it seemed that OEMs were 1st,carriers & consumers second tier.

Now, when they develop for consumers, it seems that the carriers seem to go "lol, we pass"

The phone in terms of usability seems to do very little more than your launch focus other than the camera and I guess the Nokia nav. Your basically upgrading to a device that isn't really that much better than your current device because the specs pre Apollo are capped.

Idk... Maybe I'm crazy...
