Allow me to step out on a limb for a moment. On Friday, perhaps even before you read this, Nokia will reveal its strategy for the future, a strategy that many pundits believe will involve some deal where the company partners on Windows Phone with Microsoft. It's an interesting idea that has its backers and naysayers. But let me take this idea a step further since, let's face it, both Microsoft and Nokia need to be bold in order to succeed in a mobile market increasingly dominated by Apple and Google. I think the companies partnering isn't enough. I think, instead, that they should merge. This would send a message to the world that they are both serious about the mobile market, big time, and willing to bet their futures on it. Anything less would be a half-step. Anything less, in other words, simply doesn't go far enough.
I agree, with Nokia onboard Microsoft doesn't need HTC, Samsung and the rest to make phones for them. This partnership will end up in a merger by 2013 imo.brotkasten said:Thurrot's take on this, even before the announcement was official:

It would be pretty amazing if they had this announcement followed by some major details of the Mango update at MWC. They could turn people around on WP7 in a single week![]()
"Nokias following a similar lead to what HTCs been doing, in not investing in our own platform, taking solid platforms and filling the gap to deliver a solid experience to the end user," he said, calling it "a validation of what were doing."
He did not however express any concern about the looming competition.
He admitted that HTC would not have any new Windows Phones to show off at Mobile World Congress, but said several will be announced later in the year.
And now the funny part that came right after that:Mackenzie said HTC will continue to produce Windows Phone 7 devices, despite the Nokia announcement. It won't be announcing any new Windows models next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but several will be announced later in the year.
Riiight."Obviously Windows Phone 7 is a platform we've invested tremendously on" and "we'll continue to support that," he said.
engadget said:Look what we've found! This is the first image you'll see anywhere of the early fruit of Microsoft and Nokia's budding new partnership. We have it on good authority that the technicolor phone on show is an early conceptual device produced by the two companies -- so don't jump to any conclusions about retail hardware just yet. All the same, there's plenty of familiarity to what Nokia is doing with the design -- the shape of these handsets is somewhere between its recent N8 and C7 Symbian devices and there is, as usual for Nokia, a choice of sprightly color schemes. The trio of keys adorning the new concept's bottom give away its Windows Phone 7 ties, but also remind us that the N8 and E7 are highly unlikely to get any WP7 upgrade love. The best part about this whole discovery, however, might be that it confirms Steve Ballmer's assertion that the engineers of both companies have "spent a lot of time on this already." So, who else is excited about owning an Engadget-blue Microkia device?

Not sure how official it is but that might be their concept phone..... and I want one now.
That's the problem.early conceptual device
We can only hope video calling will be more popular than it was in the last five years.Joe said:that's a sweet phone but i really wish there was a "flagship" phone for WP7 in the pipeline. i'm ready to buy a new phone in a month and i really want WP7 but i want a phone that will last me at least 2 years (re: need a front facing camera).
i might have to "settle" for android.
There is, it's called the Omnia 7.Joe said:that's a sweet phone but i really wish there was a "flagship" phone for WP7 in the pipeline. i'm ready to buy a new phone in a month and i really want WP7 but i want a phone that will last me at least 2 years (re: need a front facing camera).

We should ignore it, it's an early concept.Brettison said:Lacks the standardized button placement in those pics though. Even if that is the camera button on the top like I think it is you don't have an actual volume rocker. Plus design wise IDK looks similar to what's out already. Not the same persay, but not radically different IMO.
Count me in the group that hopes MWC has real info for us WP7 owners, and not just pimp'n out the Nokia announcement along with going back over copy and paste with an assurance that the update is coming "soon" LOL
I don't see how they're dumb. The Samsung phones clearly are Microsoft's flagship phones and they know that. Every AT&T ad (the premium carrier for the US, btw) shows the Focus and it's also in every product placement I saw (there's also one of the dev phones, but only in early PPs).Korey said:There is, it's called the Omnia 7.
Too bad Microsoft and everyone involved is too dumb to realize it.
The Omnia 7 looks much better than the Focus. And it's not a flagship phone if you have two of them, they look different, are called different things, and aren't available depending on where you live.brotkasten said:We should ignore it, it's an early concept.
Well, Microsoft said they'd have something to say at MWC regarding the updates (see the Facebook thingy I posted).

@ZuneSupport Can you give me a change log for the last Zune software client update?
I apologize we do not have access to that info. Basically the update is dealing with WP7 things. ^SM
@ZuneSupport Where can I get that info?
There is not public info released at this time. ^SM
@ZuneSupport The update has been out for days and there's still no public info available? Not doing yourself a favor with all the WP secrecy
I can definitely understand why you are frustrated. ^SM
@ZuneSupport That's good. Now, tell me, do I really have to read some blog to get a semi-official change log? http://bit.ly/fdDBEF Really?
I can understand your frustration. I wish I had more info to provide. ^SM
Eh, flagship Android wasn't available everywhere either. Then again, maybe that's part of why Android is pretty much a non-factor in Canada. I think what you mean is what you want to be the flagship isn't available in the largest country!Korey said:The Omnia 7 looks much better than the Focus. jagowar said:I do too but I really hope they make the buttons on the front actual buttons and not the touch buttons currently show (and on the focus). There have been a number of times already where I am playing a game and accidentally swipe too far and hit the start button which goes to the homescreen.
Plus a real button could also be used as a second power on button for the device (the focus's tiny button on the side kinda sucks and its the only way to power it on)

The Shift said:I do this all the time with my Omnia7 - to me it's quite a large design oversight and bothers me to no end. I always liked the look of that Asus concept that seems to have nice hardware based buttons but since that was a no show the O7 was the pick of the crop for me.

And this is a problem because Windows Phone launched earlier than was ideal, given the unfinished and somewhat buggy state of the product. This wouldn't be a problem, I thought, because Microsoft had pledged to update Windows Phone rapidly, emulating what Apple did during the first year of the iPhone, and to add features and be transparent about its plans, as Apple has done all along. Neither has happened, and my sources tell me that the first mega-patch for Windows Phone has sat undeployed on Microsoft's servers because the software giant's wireless carrier partners--contrary to another unfulfilled promise--have refused to OK it for release.....
