They have ignored the zune? They have continued to release new hardware for it updated the software over and over and built it into the 360.. I do not think they have jumped ship on it by any means. Now the Kin... needed to die.

Oh and I am starting to lean towards the LG phone.. I really think I would enjoy the pull out keypad.
I was talking about the hardware and marketing support. They evolved Zune into their multi media service for music and video on all 3 screens and that's very cool, but the Zune HD deserved more attention. It's still one of the best PMPs out there (imo), but it only had few tv spots at launch, it's only available in the US, and even there it's not that easy to get one.

Bizarrely Microsoft has made a new advert for the Zune HD:

They should have used it when they launched it.

I still want microsoft to create a phone based off the zunehd (with a 4 inch super amoled).

A new commercial for the Zune HD? Now that's funny.

This is the (only?) TV spot they had a launch.

Just to point out the lack of good commercials, I'm gonna leave this unofficial, probably fan-made spot here. It was made by ... fuck knows how made it, but it's definitely not an official spot.

One thing I hope they add is a Now Playing screen similar to what's on the desktop software and ZuneHD. I'm sure they probably don't do this for battery reasons, but I'd at least like the option! :D

It doesn't have the awesome now playing screen from the Zune HD? What the fuck? I'll definitely keep my Zune HD for music.

Nope. What you see in the picture above is the Zune player. It shows the artist in the background, but it doesn't animate or do the cool typography or colors. Sort of a bummer, but I totally understand their reasoning for it.

Well, you can always turn it off on the Zune HD, so yeah, an option would be nice.

I think we've heard this before and now it's coming up again.
Verizon's first WP7 in January will be the HTC 7 Trophy (eewww).
I’m told this is the Windows Phone model that will appear first on Verizon, in January.

I seriously hope HTC improved the quality of the Trophy.

My sister returned her focus for an iphone 4, but I loved my short time playing with the os. I'm looking to get into the platform as cheaply as possible, without using up my contact upgrade. I think the lg phone might be the cheapest one on the market right now, based on ebay auctions I've looked at (~$325). Any other ideas as to how to get into the platform without spending a lot?

If any lurkers wan't to unload their phone, let me know.

The phones still expensive w/o contract and I am not surprise you sister exchange it for iPhone4. I love the WP7 OS but it still got a way to go yet to match all iPhone features and refinement.

I want to get LG for my wife also but I figure when the next batch of WP7 phones comes out in a few months the first wave probably be cheaper. Also most people like your sister are still under return policy so if they are unhappy with the phone they just exchanged it.

Now that's interesting and ... well, pretty stupid.

Microsoft is actually limiting one of the biggest selling points for WP7 (at least marketing-wise), the live tiles. You can only use 15 of them on the home screen.

This is one of those things that’s not a big deal today but could be soon. Apparently there’s a limit on the number of live tiles you can have (like weather apps that update the temp or Twitter apps that tell you how many unread Tweets you have). And if you exceed it you simply get an error message to the app that’s generic so you don’t know that’s the problem. Further, there’s no central place for a user to track the live tiles they have active and toggle them.
WP7 Only Permits 15 Live Tiles

antiquegamer said:
That is pretty stupid ... wonder what the reason for limitation? memory? battery life?
I think it's a bit of everything. Battery life, memory usage, data usage.

e: I'd like to see a comment from Microsoft.

To be fair, 15 is a lot...I maybe have 5 right now, if that. Not many apps have live tiles.

Still, if it becomes an issue, I could see MS changing it with future updates or hardware (hopefully the former).

hell yeah 15 is a lot. I wished that they would do "pages" kinda like the ipod, but I guess it would use some extra memory to have to save and render each tile per page.

Too be honest I'm getting a bit skittish, I can't really nail the reason down, but I am. This is coming from a person who can't bear to be parted from his phone.

I'm not worried either.... sure it sucks right now but I have little doubt that will be increased when there are more than 15 apps that even use the push functionality.

Wait, people are actually bitching about 15 live-tiles being limited? :lol

I suspect they'll (or possibly others will?) attack it from the other direction. If WP7 becomes popular, and by implication Zune becomes easier to market, they'll then double down on it.

I think pages would sort of defeat the purpose of the Metro UI ... but when the marketplace mature I can see it become a problem. But then again how many app people used on regular basis anyway (that's not a game).

Yes, I agree 15 is plenty. (I only have may be 5 that are live tile).

What are you skittish about that this will be MS next Kin or Windows ME? I think they have a winner here or at least a good contender if they willing to push out update and listen to user.

I don't want developers to shy away from it, not like any have talked about it, but still. I'm eating my own FUD I guess.

so is the focus the best WP7 for att? I'm digging the interface and dell is offering it for free so I'm considering getting one over the iphone 4.

Also has any other WP7 been announced for att thats coming out soon? I'd kill for a physical keyboard.

The LG Phone on AT&T has a hardware keyboard. Focus still seems to be "the" WP7 device to get across all carriers in the US.

Anyone else have issues getting app updates from marketplace? Seems like gReadie consistently doesn't want to update for me. Always end up having to uninstall and reinstall.

I had that issue once but it seemed to go away after a reset and hasn't cropped back up for me. I've had several successful app updates since then. Maybe syncing helps it figure out what version it is.

Speaking of updates I'm on pins and needles waiting for the Beezz update. It's supposed to gain a live tile and push @mentions and direct messages as toasts. If it does this it will make WP7 the best Twitter platform ever (although I'd bet there's an Android program or hack that does this too but I'm not a 1337 haxors, so I don't care).

Where is the Focus at Dell? And is it only for new ATT customers or upgrades?

what's up with the IMDB app? it launched as a model for how a WP7 app should look and feel like and now, it's still the same old inception background with zero updates on the news screen.

just switched flixster to my start screen. when does the live tile kick in? still shows the same old popcorn icon to me.

Haven't seen that issue yet, but I've received error codes quite frequently when attempting the initial download. A few retries usually fixes that.

The only really weird marketplace issue I've had is that I somehow got in a state where trying to launch it just didn't work. There would be the black screen with the usual loading dots ... then boom, back to the home page. Tried numerous times - same thing. A reboot fixed it and haven't had the problem since.

I've had that market place issue too. Reinstall just fixes it.

On nicer news my silicone case from amazon arrived. My o.nia 7 is now safe from bumps. My only issue is that its harder to press the lock button.

Thank you. Keep in mind that this isn't a brainless hype thread, so don't be afraid to post your negative experience you had.

I deleted my original post, because I didn't want to be called a Microsoft-hater or something like that, and because my situation is very specific, which means that the "problems" I'm having (ot the problems I would have had) are non-existant to most people posting in this Thread. Anyways; I'll post my story again.

I didn't have to work today so I just stayed at home to play around with the phone as soon as it shows up. Before it showed up I went online and read about it, watched videos, and did stuff like that. All the websites I've visited were american (english) ones and I did not think that the experience I was going to have with this phone would be any different from the experience those people are having. I was wrong. I found out that not only do I get a gimped version of the Zune Marketplace (no Podcasts, I'm a huge Podcast-fan), I'd also not be able to experience Xbox Live like everyone else. It turned out that there's something called "Xbox Live Extra" that bascially gives you the functionality to interact with the people who are already on your Xbox Live Friend List. Messaging, comparing achievements, etc. This Xbox Live Extra is currently not available in my country (Germany) and no one at Microsoft has any information about wether it will be available at some point or if this is just something that'll be exclusive to english-speaking countries.

Some might think that this is a minor problem, but I've experienced stuff like this before. For example; 18-rated games can sometimes not be on Sony's PlayStation Network. Demos are forbidden if they're rated 16/18. I'm waiting for Sony to fix this problem since they've released the PS3... they haven't. Since Microsoft's XBL Marketplace doesn't have these restrictions (for some weird reason) I thought that there won't be any differences with my phone either. There shouldn't be any differences and there's no reason for them. Even though this might seem like a minor problem I'm not willing to pay the same amount of money for a phone if I get less features. I'm already paying more (compared to what I'd have to pay if I were buying it in the US) so I want to at least have the same amount of features... The funny thing is; there's a video available on Xbox Live that shows all those Extra Features.

I sent the phone back as soon as it showed up and I don't think I'm going to buy another WP7. I really should have gathered more information before I clicked the "buy" button.

Did you buy it? I had an issue where apps that are paid for but have a trial, weren't updating. It will list the updates, but if you have the trial version, you'll never get them.

Hm, not sure, my IMDb app is outdated as well (news is from Nov 7). I think the Flixster live tile shows new arrivals or featured movies, mine took a day after the Live Tile update and now shows Tangled on it.

Wow that does suck, and I don't blame you. In my case right now the thing that is bothering me is the lack of a Unified Messenger whether from Microsoft or a third party, or news of one at all (sorry but lync won't cut it) and my return by date is rapidly approaching. I mean I love the shit out of my phone, but the lack of news it tearing me up, it already made me return one phone back as my wife has to have it (Aol) I might just return the HD7 for a my touch 4g, and wait to see what MS has in store.

Blah, I don't know, and yes not being able to download Podcasts from the market place does strike me as a bit of an oversight.

Those are some serious problems (advertising features that are not there). I'll try to gather more information about the limitations of WP7 in other countries and will update the OP on Sunday.

btw, they explained the lack of podcast support outside the US in an episode of the Zune Insider, but I can't remember which episode it was. I'll try to find it.

Nah it's cool. I love my phone, and have been a big poster in this thread. Yet I've had similar worries. MS does have a good platform to build off of, but in the smartphone arena they need large swaths of people to care and not just themselves. Mainly because if others don't care then it kills the app market in terms of getting apps as well updating current ones.

I think once the platforms hit all carriers that'll help. Plus I think NA Gaf might be more worried cause it's doing better in the EU verses on our homefront.

Yeah, the dude who discovered the trick already put up another wallpaper with a flashlight design. Very cool trick. I immediately setup a completely transparent wallpaper. It works also when you're in an app. So if you're using one of those apps that keep their state when the screen is locked you can tap and immediately see what's behind it. At-a-glance ftw :lol . It looks brilliant with the zune app in the background. Now if we could adjust how the time if takes for the lockscreen to turn back to black... One odd effect is that if the app uses the app bar (e.g. IE and twitter apps) you'll always see it at the bottom of the transparent lockscreen. I like the app bar, but I guess this is the final push to make metro browser my main one. The app is soo nice, it's better than iOS's bar template, Android's hardware menu button and webOS's software menu button. What I want from the WP7 to use the ellipses only when there are more options, and to allow us pick which buttons we want from all options to show in the app bar... oh yeah, I'm going to use a black strip at the bottom, in the transparent wallpaper, to cover the menubar and add an arrow there for those not familiar with how WP7 works.

Apparently transparent lock screen doesn't work if you have a password on your phone. If you don't have a password on your phone, you should have a password on your phone.
