You don't need a screen protector, you have a gorilla glass screen. As for case, I just picked up a silicone case from Amazon.

Did you get it yet? Because I got one, and hated it. Returned it. Far too grippy and it came ripped a little bit.

After returning that case I decided I don't need one at all. The phone is perfectly fine all by itself.

Mine was fine, felt smooth and wasn't torn or anything. I've already got a few dings on the plastic, so I'm definitely going to use a case.

I ordered the Amzer Luxe Argyle (smoke grey) directly from Amzer (it was out of stock on Amazon and I don't know if they would have shipped to Canada anyways). I have been using the case for a week or so now and I am very happy with it. While the case isn't especially thin, it is still very easy to keep it in my pocket and I feel it gives the phone a really nice feel and a bit more weight. Using the phone with one hand (as per my BlackBerry days) is much easier with the case on as it has just enough grip that the phone won't slide easily out of my hand as it would with no case.

The side buttons are covered and it does make them a bit more difficult to press, but so far this hasn't proved to be too bad and if I wanted to I could always cutout the area where the buttons are. The camera button is the one where this is more of an issue, as holding the button down part ways in order to use the auto focus is difficult.

Even with the button coverings, I think this case is very good and would highly recommend it; especially considering it costs less than $10. I guess some might not like the pattern on the back, but with the smoke colour it is not that noticeable... although I like the look anyways.

I'd be wary of this. My prior Focus which was dropped on some gravel got a small scratch on the screen. Sure, it dropped on gravel, but gravel at least has some give to it, compared to one giant solid rock.

My replacement Focus also has a small scratch already. Not too noticeable but it's definitely a scratch. No drops this time, either!

I'd invest in a screen protector if you want to be careful.

Can anyone help me with this. Google isn't helping me =(

It needs DHCP.. (as you can't assign an IP address manually)

There is no help for you at present.

Your best bet for uploading photos before you get home is to find a place with available wifi.

edit:

You need help configuring DHCP on your notebook?

Do you have an internet connection for your notebook that you can share with your phone? If not, an adhoc connection to a computer isn't going to help you as there is no way to transfer photos without internet access (the cloud) or via a micro usb cable.

If something is strong enough to crack/scratch gorilla glass, how is a super thin piece of plastic going to help?

Well, my comments were more or less directed at Gorilla Glass not being as indestructible as most think, at least in my personal experience. It's not like I carry diamonds in my pocket with my phone, I don't even know how the replacement got scratched.

And scratch =/= crack. My screens never cracked. A thin piece of plastic would help with scratches.

Just bought a focus for 50 dollars and radio shack yesterday and have so far been loving it. I'm sure this was covered somewhere in this thread but is there an easy way to migrate my iphone contacts to the focus?

Its a two step process. First you export the contacts from your phone (Google for the method), then you upload them to windows live or Google.

What is the best W7 phone for AT&T? Please say it isn't the Samsung, I am over their lack of support for mobile devices.

Samsung Focus.... Its just absolutly AWESOME.

Until you realize they haven't released a single update nor do we have an actual date on the first update.

Then again, Samsung hasn't updated my wife's Captivate to Froyo and its been a longer wait. So its lose-lose so far. We are all expecting an update next month, though, we'll see.

Samsung Focus all the way. Me and two of my roommates have them, and we all love them.

Samsung doesn't really have a big role in supporting the phones than they do with Android. It's mostly on Microsoft's shoulders.

anyone finish crackdown? can it even be completed? i've got 20 bases and have almost maxed them out.
I've got 200/200.

The hardest is the Skills for Kills one. You need to kill 200k enemies with manual targeting. So just find a really straight road and get some lasers shooting down it.

I don't know, I love mine Incipio case. I was using my Focus without the case at work but I realize I prefer to have the case as it help with grip and bump into corner of desks and tables. The incipio is also very light and the phone is still thin enough to slip into small leather case. (pictures somewhere a few pages back).

I have been playing a lot of Zombies!! , only downside is it drain battery awefully fast.

@brotkasten: You always have a couple of Screenshots for the Apps you show in the App Thread. Where do you get them from? I've tried a couple of Apps, want to recommend some, but posting about them without Screenshots might not be the best thing. When I click on the Preview Screenshots in the App Store the screens are really, really small. :/

man, microsoft really sucks in bringing features worldwide. the desktop bing search in germany is more or less a reskinned MSN search. i would live bing, if i had access to the real deal

Yeah, I thought moving to the UK would solve some of these problems, but it doesn't seem like all the features are available there either...

This is how I do it:
I get the screenshots, logos/icons and Zune Marketplace link from www.marketplacebrowser.com, then I render a Microsoft Tag with that embedded Marketplace link and resize the screenshots and the tag (200px width for portrait pics, 402px for landscape). When I'm done, I upload everything to www.imgur.com and that's it.

Resizing the pictures takes the most time (I should write a script for that), but I can't just post 800x480 screenshots in the thread and I like the organized look.

I think I'll post some apps and games tomorrow. Didn't have much time last week.

Just change the region settings for the Bing search to US.

i did, but that only helped a little. features like local results (maybe for cinema etc) will show american results. that is a bit annoying.

Just had a chance to play with my friends Venue Pro. It's just pure sex. MS is so stupid not to get this phone demoed at retail outlets. Once people get their hands on that rock solid hardware and that buttery smooth interface I'm sure they would be sold.

lol

Maybe because it isn't, or at least wasn't, rock solid hardware? The thing was a buggy pile of steaminess.

Does leaving the WiFi turned on when in an area that doesn't have WiFi at all cause some battery drain, anyone know? Just curious, I've been leaving mine "on" all the time, though most of my day is spent where I can't get to any (@ work).

I have to say, the sound quality of the phone playing mp3s is pretty impressive. I normal office rig is an iPad with a line-out to an external headphone amp, and just listening to the Focus through my headphones it comes close. Not quite there, but I'd say 85% as good. I might have to start using this thing as my primary office music player, given my abject hatred of iTunes and the way it handles music. The Zune software was like a breath of fresh air.

i believe the only time you can have wifi on without drain is when it's on the lock screen. once you are at the home page the wifi awakes from sleep and starts searching.

Thurrot went off on Microsoft on the latest Windows weekly for the poor handling post launch of Windows Phone 7. He just eviscerated them. As he puts it, they are not even on pace with the iOS platform from 2007 in terms of support and updates.

This sort of silence from MS about the platform is one of the reasons I am holding back from possibly getting one of these phones. I am very intrigued with the platform but the silence is deafening.

At least the update is worth the wait, because Microsoft is doing copy/paste rig... oh.

Chris Walsh, one member of the ChevronWP7 team, commented on the first update.
Copy & Paste

It”s hard to believe something like this was missing, but even more so people actually missed using it (the generic excuse from fruit phone owners when bagging the platform). Sure there are certain scenarios where it’s required, but only a few.

Having said that, in the first update you’re getting copy and paste. For reals! Now, developers don’t need to modify ANYTHING, you just get it for “free”, with some caveats of course.

The biggest one being, copy and paste is ONLY supported on the textbox control in 3rd party apps. When I say supported, I’m talking about the OS automagically recognising the input control and giving the user the fancy text selection picker with a “copy” button.

One issue I have noticed though is certain apps don’t actually use the textbox to render read-only text. For example, the Twitter for Windows Phone app, when you’ve clicked on a tweet to either view it or click on a link, the text isn”t rendered in a TextBox control. Unfortunately you’re not going to get copy & paste there. The simple fix is to change to a textbox control for scenarios where a user might need to copy some text into the clipboard but it requires some effort from application developers.
He also talks about the improved app loading and the future of homebrew on WP7.

It's things like this that are killing this platform in its tracks. it's clear it's potentially a better model than Android in a lot of ways but they are seriously dropping the ball.

When I saw the WP7 at the AT&T store I had the feeling I had when I first used the iPhone, something that never happened with any Android phone I have ever touched. It's sad.

So yeah, they are dropping the ball on the updates so far and in communicating with users, but there is still the other half of the equation, which is that this platform, in the words of Thurrot, doesn't have any endemic issues that should prevent anyone from buying. Out of the gate, its a really solid platform that does multimedia better than any other phone, has all the ingredients to be the best gaming platform, and has built in synergy for contacts and pictures that no other phone has out of the box.

MS is being fairly open about the updates.

However, if you look at the iPhone updates, notice that most of them early on were for terrible bugs (security, crashing, etc), ones that WP7 doesn't really have, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. MS does indeed have some crash bugs which will likely be fixed (marketplace!), but at least there are no bugs which allow hackers to take control of your phone.

That being said, don't forget that this is a minor update we're getting. Later on this year we're getting the major update, which will include IE9 as well as various other new things. Since MS doesn't have complete control over the updates, and the fact there's multiple devices on multiple carriers, each update is also more time-consuming and expensive to do than if MS was in a situation like Apple with basically complete control and one phone on one carrier, which is why we're not getting patches whenever minor issues are discovered.

iOS has the same 'problem' too with some apps not supporting copy & paste. It's not possible to copy text in the AppStore, for example.

To be honest, I don't know how much more open Microsoft can get with upcoming WP7 updates. We know what is going to be in the first update, we know the time frame (look at the OP, they always said 'early 2011' or Q1 2011) and we know it's going to be a minor update (something like iOS 4.x or Android 2.x). Apple isn't doing anything else (announcing an update, the features and the time frame) and I can't remember when Google spoke about Gingerbread and its new features. Thing is, you just can't talk openly about things that are coming in the next 6+ months, without risking to lose your credibility. At that point you don't know for sure if a feature is going to make it into the final release or not, so it's better to be quiet instead of making too many promises you can't keep. But hey, that's just how I see this. It doesn't mean I don't want it now (kinda expected it for CES).

btw, Thurrot's whining is understandable. He's using WP7 since June or July, which is much longer than probably most of us here.

Just rumors. I can't remember that Microsoft said anything about the second update for the second half.

Hasn't Microsoft already lost all credibility when it comes to WP7? I mean; when was the last time the major blogs have talked about anything really positive? Everything is just "Zune is shit here", "Feature X is missing there", etc.

I also just downloaded an App called "Chou". It's a chat program that puts you in a chat room with a random person who is also using the program. Sounds nice, but it doesn't really seem to work for me (or no one is using it).

snap0212 said:

On the rumor list, the other major feature is a Silverlight runtime. This will allow you to view Silverlight content in the browser. There are other features rumored such as far eastern language support, and there's going to be other features we will hear about probably after the first update.

Apple has in the past announced an update, an exact date it will drop, and what features are included. Far more specific than what we have from MS. They definitely don't give a long lead time in them, though, certainly nothing longer than a month or so.

And that's probably the biggest problem, that MS has been far too vague when the market reality is that they are expected to move quickly to catch up in key areas and they are being perceived as moving too slowly. The disconnect is partly media driven, partly anxious user driven, but it definitely exists and is hurting phone adoption imo. I think MS set themselves up with all the pre-release talk about how they controlled updates rather than the carriers. It set up an expectation that we would have a faster update cycle than is the current reality.
