C'mon guys, give MS a break. It's their first update and people are already losing hope on the OS. Sure, we never want issues to arise, but these things happen and we can only hope MS learns from their mistakes.
Well, they promised that the first update was going to be availabe "very, very soon". This was in November. Now it's February, the first update was delayed until March, and the pre-update update doesn't work as it is supposed to and has also bricked some phones out there. Microsoft has to do something if they want us to trust them...

blame the carriers for blocking it (though i have no idea why they are able to have a say, at&t doesn't block my updates on my PC).

Can you name one positive thing about the platform that has come along post launch?

Just flashed the carrier independent rom for my Optimus 7 and the NoGo update (tee hee, Samsung users :P) was immediately available.

Could be two things:
  1. hard reset made my phone instantly available for the update at the Zune software
  2. something something carriers suck something

Their first update....lol. I'm not sure if you know, but MS has a long history with updating software.

You have the actual update already? How is this possible? :(

As I said, I flashed the original LG rom, then checked for an update and it was there.

edit: Whoa, whoa. I was talking about the pre-NoDo update! Aka "NoGo" for Samsung users.

So how does the phone let you know that an update is ready? Is there a toast? Or do you just have to go to the settings and look under phone update to see if something is there? As far as I know, this isn't like Android where you can force check from the phone, right?

Still no update for me. I'll be surprised if my Focus is updated by the weekend honestly.
It's not even an important update and it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft stopped the update for Samsung devices.

edit: I demand some sort of app management with Zune 5.0!

I'm glad I'm not having the deal with the initial growing pains many of you are facing as early adopters, and will instead be picking up a copy and pastable, multi-tasking, more app options, WP7 phone in June.

Sorry all who are affected :(

June? ha

not sure if I should just get an Omnia 7 now, or get some android phone now, and a WP7 phone in 2012.

I love Zune, but WP7 just doesn't seem finished. Maybe with the mango update, but that'll probably be at the end of the year. Also, even though everyone praises the UI, it still needs a lot of improvements such as the app list and pages containing a lot of info (just look at those update screens above, looks so ugly). It's disappointing how they haven't even mentioned any UI improvements.

Sorry for the OT, but what Gaf custom theme is that?!

Mine updated , no issues. Is it carrier locked for the firmware for the Window Phone 7 OS? I though it was via Zune (wifi network).

Mine is a Samsung Omnia 7 phone.

This really sucks. I just read the ArsTechnica article and my focus happens to be the one
that can't be updated because the firmware is too old. Samsung and MS better get this
crap straighten out.

many aren't being affected but yeah, hope this bad press gets microsoft into high gear with these updates. not like apple really cares but they're probably looking at this saying, "see, this is why we make our own phones and why we've stuck with only one carrier for years."

wat

If the world was made up of the United States maybe.

I think his has more to do with samsung being inept at software/hardware binding really, and not microsoft.

I have to agree. I am not the one to go easy on Microsoft but that article read just like another anti-MS piece by Ars Technica.

It's happen on some Omnia and Focus phone, it's not widespread bricking. My first iPhone "bricked" after the first update and that Apple dealing with ONE carrier and ONE phone, the one they make themself.

There's not even an update for me (HD7). :/

HD7 owner here, I am being prompted for the update but Zune tells me I need 1.5 GB free on C drive ( I have over 9 GB) and the update fails.

BAH, maybe I'll wait for a bit for this ominous feeling to pass before I try the update again on a different machine.

Of the improvements that wp7 needs, the UI is probably least. Its already fantastic. The app list may need some tuning, but complaining about a deep menu that has to provide important information (and does so in very plain language to boot) is silly.

As someone eligible for a phone upgrade in August, and with a Zune pass, would a WP7 be a good idea? I feel like I'd like the iPhone more, but the music thing is a big.
Edit: With Verizon.

I don't know ...

But seriously, it's not like MS doesn't have a testing facility.

Verizon should have WP7 devices in August and yes, if you like the Zune Pass, WP7 is the way to go. It must be awesome to stream all your music via 3G.

I usually don't read Ars, but they didn't seem to be that anti-MS in the past.

The article was written by Peter Bright, Ars' resident 'Windows guy'. He owns and uses a WP7, as he mentions in the article, and has written a couple of articles on WP7 for Ars (most of which are positive).

My biggest problem with the WP7 is not the slow updates or the buggy software or the marketplace crash, it's one missing feature: tethering. It's such a shame Microsoft killed off the jailbreak scene so early :/

You can tether with the Focus after making changes in the diagnostics menu. I'm not sure about other phones though.

The only phones that need a jailbreak for tethering are the HTC ones. With LG, Dell or Samsung phones you can enable it via service mode.

This event tells me Windows Phone is going down the road of Android devices in terms of updates, etc. I'm one of the ones who just doesn't want to deal with it. It's clear their middle ground between iOS and Android is leaning heavily towards the Android side of the mix. Did they fail to even test any Samsung phones?

This is a shame, because the phone OS is obviously great, but the they are screwing up the management of it. A typical phone user won't care about any of this, but if you come from the iPhone world it's hard to swallow.

My update works. It seems that some of the really early Samsung firmwares are a bit naff. I know my manual firmware update fixed a lot of issues.

After mucking around with a coworkers wp7 for awhile.. im in love.

What a cool clean looking os.

I'll probably jump on one of these phones once new hardware is released.
Anyone have an ETA on that?

Nothing official, but we'll probably see the second gen this fall with the big 'mango' update.

You can only enable USB tethering and it only works with Windows computers iirc (I use a Mac). A WiFi hotspot is a must in this day and age when I carry around multiple devices that connect to the internet only through wireless. I'd be happy to use a WP7 phone now, with all its limitations, if I could take along an iPod Touch, or tablet or laptop for when I needed something more capable. Microsoft said tethering would come in the first update but I'm now glad I didn't wait. I'd like to see either Microsoft/nokia release an unlocked phone with tethering functionality out the box (like google does with the nexus series and microsoft/nokia previously offered with their enterprise smartphones) or third-party developers in a 'jailbreak' scene offer an app that does the same (like what's available for webOS and iOS).

If I was you I would wait until the end of the year for the nokia wp7 device.... something tells me that one will be special with the way them and ms are working together.

Is it going to be available tomorrow? I think they'll just announce it.

Not sure. Engadget says "Launching" but I guess that could mean either. Seems more of a word you'd use for making available but then again, wouldn't Sprint advertise it just a smidge if it really were coming to market that quickly?

Darn. Isn't the HTC 7 Pro (HTC Arrive) the worst Windows 7 Phone you can own?

The screen isn't sharp. The camera/record features are meh. Right?

The screen seems damn fine, the viewing angle is not too great though..

Camera also seems fine.

Just about to install the new update.

What? Are you confusing the 7 Pro/Arrive with the LG Quantum? Sure the LCD screen isn't as good as Samsung's SAMOLED screen, but the build quality and keyboard are great.

It's Microsoft's fault for setting expectations they couldn't meet. Microsoft promised that the first update would come quickly and with no hassle. This isn't even a 'real' update and there are already problems. *smh*

I had no idea they 'promised' an update 'very soon'. Then again, March could be their 'very soon'. I'm not trying to make excuses for them, though... March isn't 'very soon' at all. I agree they need to step up their game
(then again, I bought the phone a week ago so March is soon for me)
.

Regarding the update, they certainly handled the situation the wrong way. But mistakes like these happen, and they're trying to fix it. Not all users are having these problems, not even all the people with the supposedly phone that's having issues experienced the problem. What does this mean? The issue was complicated to reproduce.

Microsoft has already stated how you can 'unbrick' your phone and they genuinely are trying to solve this issue as soon as possible. It's their first update, and I'm sure they're learning a lot on how to prevent this from happening again. Then again, I'm not MS and I could be very wrong... I'm just stating what I see of the current situation and how MS has proceeded in the past.

Perhaps I'm a hopeless optimists?

You're right, sir. I'm sure updating a new OS on cellphones is exactly the same as updating Windows.

I agree with you.

What I basically meant was this: Don't judge a man for their first mistake. Lets see if they redeem themselves.

EDIT: What I'm truly scared for is Carriers blocking updates. What kind of BS is that?

Really want the AMOLED screen.

The recorded video I've seen from a few previews doesn't look that great, and yes, I'm using the iPhone's video record as a benchmark.

Here's one for an example.

Very true, sir. But they did. What now? You're giving up on a very solid OS?
