Windows Phone 7 |OT|

It seems like my Windows Phone 7 stopped connecting to Windows Live for some reason. My contacts connect to Facebook and Windows Live (photos and some other data comes from Facebook, telephone numbers come from Windows Live). Now when I click on my contacts I only see the data my phone gets through Facebook, but no numbers or anything. It still shows the correct names when I click on SMS, but when I look up my recent calls it just shows me a couple of numbers. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I decided to check out the Windows Live website as well to see what else I can do with my phone, but it doesn't seem like the website is that great. Maybe there's great stuff available, but I just can't find it. It would be great if I could just synch my “My Documents” folder with Windows Live to access the documents via my phone, for example. I can upload pictures, though, which is pretty cool. It feels like Microsoft could do way more with the Windows Live website than they currently do. I'm pretty tech-savvy, but I have a hard time browsing through that website, to be honest. It's not easy to understand where I can find the different things and where I have to go to enable/disable functions.

I had the same problem with my WL contacts this morning, they just completely disappeared. The phone seems to have problems syncing anything. Neither my Facebook, nor my hotmail or gmail account were up-to-date. I changed the sync settings for WL to hourly and my WL contacts were back, but not linked to my Facebook contacts anymore and the recent called list is still full of numbers. Speaking of Facebook, my phone still can't connect to it.

We're having a problem connecting.
Try again later.
Last tried about an hour ago.
Error code: 83CF3105

However, I do get contact updates, new posts and everything. Makes me think it's a problem with Microsoft's servers. I remember trying to update some apps last night and I couldn't because it wasn't able to connect to the WL service.

Compared to the MyPhone page for WM 6.5, Windows Phone Live (or whatever it's called) is shit. It has less features (no backup of txt messages) and is harder to navigate, but at least the "find my phone" feature is free (helped me finding my phone, when I left it in the car, even tho I was 100% sure I didn't). The KIN Studio integration can't come soon enough.

Samsung Focus here, does anyone know when Fruit Ninja is going to get fixed?

These phones have so much potential, but it seems like their missing a lot of features too. Mainly being able to set my own ringtone...

Ok so.. my freezing issues certainly seem to be software related. I had added 3 contacts to my front tiles.. people I contact the most. Shortly after that my phone would just lock up when not in use and when I went to use it I had to force a restart.

It locked up again last night as I receive a text message and now this morning I noticed that the 3 tiles I placed on my front that were contacts... are just gone. The phone has removed them.... anyone else had tiles just vanish from the front? The strange thing is that it was only the contact tiles.. all 3 of them.

I really hope an update makes this OS more solid.. I am getting frustrated.

Edit: Wait.. reading above that others have had this problem this morning..

What needs fixing?
Fruit Ninja crashes when booting up for many people, myself included. According to the developer once you get the error (related to connecting to Xbox Live), the error will not reset even when the connection comes back... so I have never been able to successfully boot the game. They have reportedly fixed the issue and submitted it, but to my knowledge it hasn't gone live yet.

Wow, that sounds bad. Glad I never ran into that. Hopefully that update goes live soon.

Sounds really similar to a problem I had over Christmas. I thought it was related to a minor phone drop, but it would pretty much do the same thing: it would be stuck in a certain "state" and would bug out--contacts missing, no accounts syncing, etc. Any changes you made would revert after rebooting the phone.

I thought it was related to the drop, so I got a new phone.

Yeah, ms indefinitely having server issues. I'm having the same problems some of you are reporting, including numbers in my call log without linking it to names.

Also, in the latest windows phone radio, it seemed like they were strongly suggesting that there would be a better camera app solution. Probably in mango though :(

Did someone mention "updates"?

I looks like we'll get our first WP7 update in the next days and it won't be the copy/paste update. Instead, it will be a small update to fix something in preparation for the first big update in March.

A rumor was circulating recently that Microsoft would be pushing a mini-ROM update for Windows Phone that would precede the big 'NoDo' ROM. It was speculated that this may be a test-run for the update but in fact, it looks to be a mini bug fix to ensure that NoDo and future updates are installed correctly. In fact, it sounds analogous to the Zune Desktop update that was recently rolled out for the same reason.

MonSmartphone.net is reporting that Microsoft France themselves have confirmed that an update will be pushed out to all users within in the next few days (we're actually told "today evening or tomorrow"). It's not clear if all devices are affected by this bug, therefore we might not see everyone get this update. Stay tuned.
Microsoft getting ready to push pre-NoDO update for Windows Phone

Makes me think that MS can push out individual updates like Apple. I hope we'll see more of that.

Oooo I'll try and see if I can get my phone to update later despite the fact that this update just clears the path for the real update. LOL

Best Update ever, I guess. :lol

edit: I'm on my PC now so I can write a longer reply. My opinion is still the same: Microsoft is way too slow with everything, and the final nail in Microsoft's coffin will be the new iPhone coming in June(?).

This is such bullshit.

They need to change the update rules.. they shouldn't be waiting on the carriers..

I can't possibly see the benefit to Microsoft or the end-users in letting the carriers have the final say in when the update comes.

Hey guys, question here. Is there any Twitter app that uses the timelines much like the iPhone versions do? For example, it would start where you last read, but instead of it going straight to the top to read down, it would allow you to scroll to the top. I've tried Seesmic, Twitter (official), and Beez and it doesn't seem like any support it. Am I missing something?

It sounds like most major complaints will be taken care of within 1 year of initial release, that is not slow. And I seriously doubt an iPhone 4GS (or whatever they happen to call it) is going to be any sort of nail in the coffin.

What other company waited a year before they allowed Instant Messaging? Android and iOS certainly didn't.

I'm somehow done talking about updates, though. I just don't really care anymore. I'll go back to the iPhone unless Microsoft can win me over again by showing me some effort to improve my WP7 experience.

And when did iOS get copy/paste and multitasking? How long did it take for iOS to have any sort of social gaming network? How long did it take for iOS to get support for augmented reality apps?

Come on man, iOS didn't get updated as quickly as you think. Bugfixes, sure. New functionality? No

Yeah, I just checked and you're actually right. However, the iPhone was a special thing. It was the smartphone while Windows Phone 7 is just another smartphone. Apple was basically not competing with anyone for a long time. Microsoft is. They're competing with two matured operating systems.

I don't know. I may just be pissed, because three of my friends bought an iPhone this months (they wanted to get a WP7, because mine looks 'cool, stylish') because WP7 lacks IM support. I see how Microsoft fails to win people over when I want them to succeed.

Agreed. They are playing catch up so they definitely need to move faster than the competition. Honestly, I've kind of accepted that the platform is still in a "beta" phase and isn't really ready for prime time. That's why when people ask me what to buy, I typically still push them towards the iOS camp.

I usually ask folks what they want the phone for, or if they already have a smartphone, what are their most used apps. If they use IM a lot, then no, WP7 is not for them. And while the Facebook app is great, it loads MUCH faster on the other platforms, so apart from the People Hub integration, I don't think WP7 is the best FB platform. Ditto for Twitter. But if someone is vested in Xbox Live and/or Zune, then I strongly recommend it over other platforms.

Edit:

So has ANYONE gotten the (non)update yet?

I think what annoys many of us about the IM situation is that its Microsofts friggin service. Live Messenger is one of their biggest services and their platform has a terrible version.

You know how hard it can be to convince iPhone users to use a new platform. ;-)

My main problem is that IM is just part of the smartphone experience. Never have I even thought about WP7 not having IM support. Microsoft could have simply taken a look at the Top 20 most used smartphone features and they'd have seen that it's pretty important.

Full functioning features like proper backgrounding for IM apps would contrast far too greatly with their "get in, get out" diatribe.

Did the problem go away? My phone was doing the same thing his is doing during the last few days, Exact same thing ... my contact tile disappear overnight. At this point I think may be it is time for new phone as much as I dont want to. ugh.

Contact tiles disappearing is an issue that I have seen posted in numerous places this weekend, it happened to me as well (it has happened twice since I owned the phone). It's not an issue that is affecting you only, something happened this weekend that caused it.

Yup. Went pretty smooth.

So how did it work, did it notify your phone first, or did you check through the Zune software? How long did it take to update? Are there ANY differences that you can tell on the phone?

I turned off notifications of updates to save battery life, so I manually went to the settings in Zune player and selected the device update section. Update took about fifteen minutes in total - it made a backup first.

No changes noticed to be honest!

I don't know what is wrong with mine, but I have tried three times now and it doesn't seem to want to finish the update. Each time I have let it wait for about an hour before canceling it and trying again.

When you did the update, how long was it on the screen (on the phone) where it has the device and the PC with an arrow pointing at the phone with a red line though it? I have a feeling this is indicating that it isn't working, but I have nothing to go by as to whether it should be doing this or not.

How long was iphone available before it got copy and paste?

I've given up trying to update my Focus. Four tries and it still gets stuck part way through. I'll wait a few more days and see if they can get it working... at least this one doesn't bring anything useful.

There is problem with Samsung phone it seems. ... Sigh. I knew I should not have fall for that pretty face and slender shape...

Shit I still haven't even been prompted for the update on my Focus. Oh well fuck it gotta go out and grab some dog food since my gf forgot to get some at the store then rolling over to her place to chill. Since it's not the real deal update I'll just check again in the morning.

The update is rolling out slowly, you're not the only one who's still waiting.

So, the update doesn't work for the Omnia 7? I thought they tested the updates and that's why it's taking so long?
Only if you have an older firmware. Go to the Samsung site, get the fw update and the update should work.

I currently own a Blackberry but I am looking to upgrade. I have read many reviews about the Dell Venue Pro but I would like to have an actual Gaf-user give me their $0.02 about it. I am really on the fence about getting it.

Same thing happened to me. Unlinked live contacts from fb and gmail, and recent calls were showing without a Contact associated (I panicked because I thought contact's numbers were gone). Weird behavior, hope this doesn't happen again.
