How does the Trophy compare to the other WP7s?

I think it's the best looking. Good grip in your palm as well if you don't have big hands

I've been waiting for windows 7 phone to get to Verizon, didn't know the trophy was already out. I'm sorta concerned buying this phone though because I can only upgrade every 2 years, so I'm gonna have this phone for that long. Worried that newer games that get released won't run on the Trophy, sorta like the iphone 3g situation.

If you can wait until Fall, I would.

Yea, waiting a bit more wouldn't be a problem. New fall might come new models for Verizon? The only thing is Verizon seems super slow so while something new might come out Verizon might still be introducing older models as new like the Trophy. Sorta like how Alltel was, they only had super old phones because their approval process was so long.

What do you guys think about this?

Now, a few things to remember abou Perez: he's basically one guy (indie) doing all the developing, which is quite impressive and his games are all free with ad support. It was five months ago he switched from paid games at about $0.99 to making them all free with ads.

Most of his games are pretty good for what they are.

I'd think Verizon would have a new phone to launch with Mango (which I assume will get a big push from Microsoft).

Just speculating, of course.

Is the LG Optimus 7Q available in the UK? I'm interested in getting a Windows Phone but I'd prefer one with a keyboard for texting etc. I know about the Dell Venue Pro but I'd rather have a keyboard that slid out of the side if I could.

How come the conversation bubbles in Text are all the same colour when I change the UI theme to Light?

I wish there is a way to sync pdf's or upload them to my focus. Even if you download them from email, you wouldn't be able to resend it from your email. All you can do is just read from the Adobe app.

Hope they give better choice over this.

Yeah. For work sometimes I need to forward pdf's so that is definitely something I hope they fix.

What about Dropbox? Or am I missing something else you need to do with PDFs.

Hi guys. If you remove your 'Me' tile from the home screen, how do you get it back there?

If you go into the People hub it should have your picture at the top of the contact list, press that and down the button will be a pin icon.

edit:
beaten..

Thanks. You'll be glad to know, perhaps, that I managed to get an Android user to jump in. He's getting the deal I got

Can the OP be updated with the major new features of Mango?
It can and it will happen. Lets just hope that the carriers won't block this update too!

e: I decided to delay the OP update for further testing. The 7.1 SDK has more features than expected, so I'm still looking for new stuff and taking screenshots for the OP. I kinda wish the guys over at XDA would finally unlock the image, so I can take better shots of other features that are still locked away.

You can tell you are far too much of a Windows Phone 7 fan when you start talking like their product managers (Eric Huatula on the official blog). And the fact that you are delaying everything to make sure it's great.

What's next? You have to do a pre-update to the OP to make sure the regular OP update process goes smoothly? Are you going to roll out the OP update to certain users in certain regions? Are you going to start a podcast where you ignore everyone's loud whining? Are you going to punish brettison when he "leaks" a copy of the updated OP so we can jailbreak GAF and try it out?

I'll be the Paul Thurrott of the thread, I'll criticize absolutely everything you do down to the insignificant detail while only giving you grudging and scant credit when you get things right.

Wow, I really don't like the Engadget podcast guys now. Their WP7 segments on that last one was really not good. That one guy really doesn't seem to know what the hell is up with Mango.

All the mobile phone podcast only get excited about Apple products. Mango debut and they talk for 10 mins and said things like oh it's the same thing that on RIM on Microsoft is just catching up to the third place. Meanwhile, a leak of what could be prototype case for iPhone 5 and they discuss it for half an hour while fantasizing what ground breaking things Apple could bring out like wi-fi sync and music streaming service.

Check out my posts in the comment section.

They completely fucked up the eInk stuff (misinformation, faulty conclusions, etc) ... and failed up the Mango information due to absence. Seriously ... it was a pretty terrible podcast, especially considering most of the correct info was already posted on Engadget ... and for what wasn't, was easily found online elsewhere.

I know this is kind of a silly question, but what is the "best" Windows Phone 7? Is there even some model that performs better than others, or has more features / is more open?

From my point of view LG Optimus 7 is the best "all around" phone. I like the its design and is the only phone with hardware buttons instead of touchy feely crap all the others have.
HD7 is also nice because of the size of the screen.

The worst is , without a doubt, the Dell Venue Pro.

I posted a comment on the Wired mango article that said this exact same thing. They spent more time analyzing the iphone curved glass rumor, while the mango article was just an obvious rush job. They even said something like "mms is coming to WP7 with mango".

also, in case it wasn't obvious: I was kidding with my post to brotkasten.

edit: here's the actual quote from the Wired article:
Wired said:
Other new features Microsoft previously announced for Mango were multitasking, copy-and-paste and multimedia messaging.

Such a lazy effort, that quote is STILL in the article, even though I pointed it out in the comments.

Omnia 7 as said before would be the best for me. Such a shame about the VP, the Lightning leak is what got me into WP7 in the first place =(

Mystery HTC Windows Phone sports 12 megapixel goodness, RAW support (Engadget)

Phone cameras still have a ways to go to catch up to the awesome capabilities of your standard DSLR, but the handset captured in the image above would certainly get them headed in the right direction. International phone review superstar Eldar Murtazin snapped a few shots of an as-of-yet unnamed HTC device running Windows Phone. It sports a look very similar to the HTC Trophy, although this particular gem is capable of capturing images at 12 megapixel resolution -- comparable to the Nokia N8. We can tell from Eldar's tweets and images, however, that it's gone one step further by adding support for pictures in RAW format. We're still waiting to get more information about this device, but for now we invite you to enjoy the images above and below.

I really want a phone that can act as a P&S for when I don't have my DSLR on me, so this sounds like good news. I can't wait to see the Nokia phones, I've yet to have a phone that bested my old N95 camera-wise.

My DVP has the shittiest camera i've ever had to use on a cell phone. No image stabilization at all, its a bloody chore to get a non-blurry image. Better cameras are very much welcome!

I can't consider any of the current crop of smartphones a P&S replacement until the models start incorporating optical zooms. I'd carry a much bigger and bulkier phone if it made the trade-off for better sensors and lenses. However, all the phone manufacturers are trending towards thinner/smaller while the camera manufacturers can't wrap their mind around a camera as a platform.

Dumb question once more. Whenever I take a picture and browse through it, I always get the Prompt to Upload it to SkyDrive. Is there anyway to stop getting this annoying prompt?

Settings, applications, pictures + camera, turn "Auto upload to SkyDrive" off

Well, I just jumped on the bandwagon. Samsung Focus should be arriving in a few days. I've been a cheap ass when it's come to my phone for years and finally decided to get something decent. Almost all of my siblings/in-laws have iPhones, but I have a Zune HD, so I'm predisposed to this interface. I'm excited.

Does HTC have any phones at all with good cameras? The Nexus One takes terrible pictures, and the other HTC phones apparently always get knocked for good optics during the reviews.

I'd take my chances with Samsung or Nokia for camera quality. Of course, who knows? Maybe HTC is going to turn that area around.

Okay, I've been rocking the Trophy now for a few days and I think I'm finally comfortable enough with it to post my impressions.

The hardware first. I really like the aesthetics. The rubbery feel of the black plastic and the rounded edges make it comfortable and nice to hold. Camera pictures look like what I'd expect phone camera pictures too look like. Nothing you'd want to get prints of, but just fine for uploading to facebook and such.

It is a little tricky to press the power sleep button with it being on an angle, but I'm getting used to it. The touch screen works just as you'd expect.

Battery life isn't great, but I wasn't expecting great battery life from a smart phone. Yesterday I was out for about six hours, uploaded half a dozen or so photos, sent a fair few texts, did a bit of facebook, played a round of Zombies!!! and it was about done by the time I got home.

I think that's going to be fairly heavy use for me, but if and when I feel like the battery is starting to struggle holding a charge I'll definately consider the $50 for the larger battery Verizon are offering.

Like I said, I doubt that's going to represent average use for me. At my main job I already have a micro USB plugged into my work computer for when I'm programming Blackberries for our staff, so I can keep it charging when I'm at my desk. At my secondary job I generally only do four hour shifts, and based on how little I get to use my 3DS when I'm at that job, I'm sure I'll only be doing a bit of texting here and there with perhaps the odd picture taken.

All in all, I'm happy with the hardware. Battery life seems the main thing you'd need to keep in mind. No idea if it's average, but reviews mentioning it being a bit of a smaller battery than most smart phones have.

That does have the plus side of course of it being light (though not so light it feels cheap, this thing feels good and sturdy) and slim. Feels really good in my pocket.

So that's the hardware out of the way, onto the stuff that everyone already knows. The OS is great.

I've been wanting one of these since they started showing it off. Android and the iPhone hadn't appealed to me remotely, but this was exactly what I was looking for from an OS. It's clean, snappy and for all the things I want to do really responsive.

Having watched all the mango videos this week, I was sort of expecting nodo to leave me a little disapointed, and it really didn't. The live tiles are wonderful. One Note synchronising with my skydrive notes wasn't quite as seamless as I expected, as there was no way to add the notebooks I use to the phone that I could see, but instead I copied the notes over into the shared notebook the phone made and that worked just fine.

I wish I could tell the screen to stay on when I have it charging.

Game wise... I grabbed PacMan CE DX and while it doesn't run at quite the framerate I was hoping, it's perfectly playable and I don't regret the purchase. Zombies!!! is a great version of the boardgame which I'd recommend to anyone that likes the boardgame. We have a lot of the booster sets too, so I'm hoping we'll see some of those down the line and get online play added in here.

While I'm dreaming, let's get that XBLA version out for the 360 and let the phone version play against the 360 version. Hey, it's turn based... no technical reason why that shouldn't be simple to pull off.

The biggest pleasant surprise for me has been typing speed. I was hoping Verizon would have launched with a slider, because I love me a physical keyboard. The on screen keypads I've used before were okay, but not quite as quick as I'm happy with, and that was a big reason why I wanted a slider. I was also thinking it'd be good for games to have physical buttons, and that may yet be the case, but the voodoo they've pulled off with this onscreen keyboard is damn impressive.

The auto correct based on typical fat fingerings is brilliant, and even making corrections when it didn't auto correct is a snap by just highlighting the word and choosing the correct replacement. Compared to other on screen keyboards, this thing flys. It may not be as fast as swype (which I've never used) but it's definately fast enough for me. I can only imagine I'll get faster on it.

I've gone with a black background and lime green tiles... and it's sexy sexy sexy looking.

I'm planning on getting myself a new cheap car stereo with a phono jack, and hooking up a car charger so that I can listen to my music or BBC Radio 1 (got the free app... it works great) while I'm driving.

I thought I'd feel like I was slumming it before mango came out, and I don't. Really looking forwards to getting my current writing project available on this when skydrive syncs up properly.
