Omnia 7 volume dilemma
Sorry to be posting so much.
Samsung have botched the volume settings in the Omnia, in regards to in-call volume and headset volume being too low whilst you're outside on the street, even on max setting. The solution to this was to input the Diagnostic code in which you tweak these volume levels, however there are only two modes available for this it seems; speaker volume and headset volume.
As you may know, the speaker volume goes up to 30 whilst in-call volume is restricted to 10. Despite this, inputting the speaker volume diagnostic code allows you to increase the in-call device volume. However, this is also increases the speaker volume. For example, playing Bejeweled after this the first thing you notice is how loud the game is until you manually change it in the in-game volume. You'll need to do this each time you start the game.
I could live with that. Annoying but not a massive problem.
Until I started to use the headphones. They were also quite low, so I changed this in the diagnostic mode. I'm listening to some music, and then I get a notification sound in the headphones. Remember I mentioned earlier the speaker volume had also been increased? The notification sounds, naturally, use the speaker volume. It was so loud I honestly jumped up thinking a bomb had gone off. What's your natural reaction? You put the volume down. Buut, you immediately realise putting the speaker volume down will also put the headset volume down (it appears they inexplicably use the same channel even though they are separate in the diagnostic mode)
I reverted the headset volume levels back to their original levels thinking that I'll just increase the volume within the songs/podcasts in iTunes then import them. Trouble is, this doesn't work in Zune. I adjusted the volume increase in iTunes..the Mac Connector detects a change to the file and syncs it over to my phone, but no difference in volume :/ Also tried with the PC. No luck there.
So I have two options
- I either disable sound notifications for email/sms.
- Or I avoid listening any audio on the phone with my headphones.
I'm going to a nearby Samsung Service Centre tomorrow as I've read elsewhere another customer with the same issue was offered a new firmware (custom?). But out of all the aspects that define phones, I can't believe Samsung fucked up the volume. This is a major issue for me as I do not want to carry around an iPod and a smartphone. Very disappointed
Update: Checking a BlackBerry and HTC, the media channel (song/podcast through headset) is separate to the speaker volume channel. This must have been an oversight for Samsung, or have they always done this for their phones?
