Does HTC have any phones at all with good cameras? The Nexus One takes terrible pictures, and the other HTC phones apparently always get knocked for good optics during the reviews.

I'd take my chances with Samsung or Nokia for camera quality. Of course, who knows? Maybe HTC is going to turn that area around.

Most people are amazed by the pictures my EVO takes. The absolute best of any phone I've owned. Including the Samsung Focus.

I hadn't actually tried the Evo when I made my original post above, so when my friend came over (who happens to own an Evo) I thought it would be a good chance to run a quick test.

So, in my living room, in dusk/low light situations, I took two shots back to back.

Here's the Evo shot.

Here's the Focus shot.

They're pretty comparable, but I think the Focus has it beat, even with 3 megapixels less. There is pink tinting on the Evo shot (take a look at them side by side), and my N1 also has tinting, whether it be blue or pink or whatever. Plus, this is before I engage the God Mode on the Focus (Macro shots). I couldn't find a macro mode on the Evo, so I couldn't test that on it. My friend did show me some good shots he took with it, so I'm not saying the camera on it is garbage or anything.

If HTC can take care of that tint bleeding over the shots in certain conditions, maybe they can pull it off, but like I said before, I'm not going to get excited over an HTC phone for its camera.

Edit: I just realized that the Evo shot is probably not full res, so maybe the phone compresses pics when you send them via email. I know my Samsung Focus does. Either way, you can still see the pinkish tint on the Evo shot. Neither my couch, nor the tile in the background are pink.

It does tend to have a certain tint to it but for me that EVO shot beats your Samsung shots handily even in Macro mode. In the EVO shot everything is sharp and with less noise. The couch, the remote and the tile are all clear.

On a somewhat related, desktop related note. Fans of WP7/Metro might want to be aware of this:

That's Austria, right? You can see in the OP where the services are available.
Yes. This is really stoneage-ish. Looks like Austria is getting treated like on XBL, we get nothing. Good thing there is always itunes and amazon music.

My phone was charged fully yesterday around 10am. It is now 2.15pm today, and whilst it is still on, there is no bar visible suggesting it will go off very soon. I've browsed in total maybe 5 minutes on it. I have both Wifi and 3G enabled always (the latter for email notification when screen sleeps). I'm going to turn Wifi off next and see how long it lasts just with 3G

I have wifi on and data off on my phone (currently abroad, no data plan), and it lasts a shit ton with lots of Wordament/Bejeweled in between. Omnia 7.

So a little more than a day with just calls/email/texts? Eh, I wouldn't complain. The screens on these large smartphones are the biggest drain, but if you've had it off most of the time, I'd look into how often you fetch mail, whether you have the MS feedback thing on by default, live tile programs, etc.

Was on the phone for maybe an hour and a half yesterday. Emails sync 'as soon as I get them'. Also had Location services turned on. In addition, I tinkered with the volume settings quite a bit.

What phone do you have? Talk time on these things is usually what? 5 hours or so? So that's a fifth of the battery there, I know push email (which is your setting) is battery intensive. Location services probably drains a bit too. Screen drained a chunk while tinkering with volume, plus natural standy drain. Also if you are in a weak 3G/signal area, that drains battery quicker as well. I've gotten used to charging my phones once a day, at least. More on my N1, less on my Focus.

Check this image on your monitor then on your WP7 screen, preferably if you have an Omnia. Do you notice any quality loss?
Are you talking about color banding? Microsoft reduced the color depth with NoDo to 16 bit, due to performance issues with Silverlight 3. Mango brings Silverlight 4 and full 32-bit support.

quick question

my Live ID password comes back invalid in the Zune software and on the phone. I think it's because it has punctuation in it. Has anyone else noticed this?

I had to change it to something else for it to work. It works fine on the Zune website, Xbox, Xbox website and all other Live ID sites.

also, when I'm using the browser I hit search it loads T-Mobile's site. Can I change this?

no, but a bunch of people were forced to change their passwords for live just a week or so ago, so i don't know if it relates to that.

my password has symbols in it and it works without any problem... but certain characters could potentially cause issues.

as far as the search thing, as i understand it, if your carrier does that, you're stuck with it. maybe rooting or whatever can fix it, but it isn't an option an unlocked phone presents.

What? It doesn't open the Bing app? Is that only when you're using the browser? What happens if you select a word and then hit the search button?

The Bing search button at the bottom of the phone only redirects you to Bing outside IE. The carriers have hijacked that button in IE however redirecting to the carriers own home page/search. In terms of typing in the address bar in IE, you have the option of Bing suggesting sites there

Does anyone know if T-Mobile in the states does this as well or this a Euro only thing?

If Microsoft were serious about old users on Windows Mobile adopting WP7, MS should put up a promotion for old users to donate their old phone to upgrade.

It's only when you're in the browser. If you hit the search button it loads some T-Mobile portal with a big google search bar.

not terrible but I like the bing app.

I've found myself just hitting home then search. It works fine and is usually quicker but it's a bit of a pain.

I'm a little disappointed that Microsoft let the carriers hijack such an important feature.

I'll play around with it and see if I can find the culprit.

Four words. Most carrier friendly OS.

And that's why I tell people to buy OEM devices without carrier branding. You get updates first and none of that crap.

Omnia 7 volume dilemma

Sorry to be posting so much.

Samsung have botched the volume settings in the Omnia, in regards to in-call volume and headset volume being too low whilst you're outside on the street, even on max setting. The solution to this was to input the Diagnostic code in which you tweak these volume levels, however there are only two modes available for this it seems; speaker volume and headset volume.

As you may know, the speaker volume goes up to 30 whilst in-call volume is restricted to 10. Despite this, inputting the speaker volume diagnostic code allows you to increase the in-call device volume. However, this is also increases the speaker volume. For example, playing Bejeweled after this the first thing you notice is how loud the game is until you manually change it in the in-game volume. You'll need to do this each time you start the game.

I could live with that. Annoying but not a massive problem.

Until I started to use the headphones. They were also quite low, so I changed this in the diagnostic mode. I'm listening to some music, and then I get a notification sound in the headphones. Remember I mentioned earlier the speaker volume had also been increased? The notification sounds, naturally, use the speaker volume. It was so loud I honestly jumped up thinking a bomb had gone off. What's your natural reaction? You put the volume down. Buut, you immediately realise putting the speaker volume down will also put the headset volume down (it appears they inexplicably use the same channel even though they are separate in the diagnostic mode)

I reverted the headset volume levels back to their original levels thinking that I'll just increase the volume within the songs/podcasts in iTunes then import them. Trouble is, this doesn't work in Zune. I adjusted the volume increase in iTunes..the Mac Connector detects a change to the file and syncs it over to my phone, but no difference in volume :/ Also tried with the PC. No luck there.

So I have two options

  1. I either disable sound notifications for email/sms.
  2. Or I avoid listening any audio on the phone with my headphones.

I'm going to a nearby Samsung Service Centre tomorrow as I've read elsewhere another customer with the same issue was offered a new firmware (custom?). But out of all the aspects that define phones, I can't believe Samsung fucked up the volume. This is a major issue for me as I do not want to carry around an iPod and a smartphone. Very disappointed

Update: Checking a BlackBerry and HTC, the media channel (song/podcast through headset) is separate to the speaker volume channel. This must have been an oversight for Samsung, or have they always done this for their phones?

Well I have a G1 droid so this is just leaps and bounds better. Smooth and simple to use interface and everything just flows amazingly. best mobile OS yet.

Glad to see it's getting more and more converts. It seems like once someone actually sits down and gives it a chance, they usually love it.

Completely missed Acer's non-announcement of the Acer W4.

3.6-inch WVGA Capacitive screen,
Screen Resolution: 480×800
5mp Camera with auto-focus.
HSPA 850/1900 or 900/2100 /GSM quad band 850/900/ 1800/ 1900 MHz Support.
Qualcomm MSM 8255 running at 1GHz (same processor as in the Xperia Play)
Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1
DLNA Support
Windows Phone Mango
8GB Storage

Very standard, very plastic-y, pretty boring, without any effort to stand out. A lame first effort, if you like. This phone better be cheap.

Hello my occasionally suffering Windows Phone friends. I just read this article and wanted it share it with you all because it seems like a really good overview of everything WP7 does right.

He also leverages some solid complaints as well. Great article.

Heh, I woke up this morning, read the article and came to share that with you guys. I'll quote this as an incentive for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:
At any rate, it’s good to see another serious entry in the mobile phone market. We now have three mobile operating systems that have a heavy focus on a great user experience, have a strong, consistent, thoughtful design language, and are generally just designed well: Windows Phone 7, webOS, and iOS. (5)
...
(5) In order of how much I like them.
Agreed.

p.s. he also has a section on the Omnia 7

I like how he pointed out that it's not really designed for having tons of apps installed. I only have a few dozen, but it's a nuisance to sort through sometimes, and worse, sometimes I forget which apps I have installed, so I don't use them as much. This morning, I downloaded a weather app cause I forgot I had one installed already.

I think they are revamping the app list with Mango

yeah, they're using a contact/music system where the apps are listed alphabetically, separated by each letter, so you can jump to each one. also i think they appear in the search results as well.

Ok I LOVE how this phone syncs up with everything. email, facebook and ect.

best $100 I ever spent :D

I can't wait for mine to show up at my doorstep. It's due to arrive this afternoon and coming from someone who's had barebones phones for years, this will be a nice step up.

Damn it. If only Sprint had that phone, I would upgrade, or if Sprint offered money for my old one, I would take the Arrive as well.

I am now on the Windows Mobile train, spent the two hours updating and tinkering.
Got the LG Optimus 7 as it was going for £185 unlocked.

I'm having a problem updating my phone.

It is a "walshed" phone. Zune gave me the notification to update, when I try, everything is fine up until the phone is restarted. It gets stuck on the "Omnia 7" black screen.

I thought it was because it was "walshed" so I used the un walsh toll, it gets stuck at the same bit again :(

Help me pls.

I'm sure everyone remebers my Focus screen complaints from a few (dozen_ pages back. The review posted earlier has a link to a piece on these pen tile displays and sums it up perfectly:

It’s kind of hard to believe that, almost a year after Apple’s iPhone 4 basically made individual pixels invisible, a display like this is still considered acceptable.

http://ignorethecode.net/blog/2011/05/09/pentile_oled_screens/

Why is everyone blinded by the blacks on the Focus' screen? It looks like garbage otherwise.

Because it doesn't to us? It's the best screen I've ever used. I appreciate that you are apparently especially sensitive to pentile displays, but is it really hard for you to understand that there are people who are unaffected by that?

I'm not trying to be as much of a jerk as I come across as, but it was a huge disappointment to me I guess.

You are the one who told me to get my eyes checked, remember.

The blacks ARE good. Viewing it in a darkened room is pretty amazing. I just don't think that one aspect outweighs everything else.

How is Windows Phone 7 for podcasts? I got to play around with one at the store and was very impressed

Going by time, listening to podcasts is by far my biggest hobby. Right now I listen to podcasts on ipod touch with a cracked screen (still works fine though)

Figured I should just upgrade my phone and save some pocket space

From my touch I know mobile itunes sucks and unless I'm missing something theres no way to download audio files (like by clicking the direct link in a bombcast thread)

I current have an android phone (G1 with no headphone out but I have tried the USB to headphone connector it comes with). From what I have listen to with it I wasn't thrilled with the performance, but at least I didn't need to be attached to a computer to get the podcasts easily

Windows Phone 7 for me?

Edit: Or would you even advise listening to podcasts on a phone due to battery life concerns? Personally I think both my G1 and ipod have shitty battery life, maybe its best to keep the phone podcast free? I'm just thinking out loud at this point...
