Do you guys feel that RIM has a future with WP7, since their current situation isnt working out? What would a RIM/WP7 alliance bring?

The new Blackberry Bolds, Torches and Curves meet minimum WP7 requirements and have touchscreens up top. The Storm/Curve Touch could use a tweaking and upgrade. I guess the Pearl and Pearl Flip could be tweaked as well. It would fit in well with the Nokia series, and not be too much of a competition between the phone styles.

They already have nokia.... all blackberry really has anymore is their name and bbm. Their phones and os don't feel modern anymore.... them going wp7 would only fix their os problems. Nokia was the perfect partner for wp7 imo.... rim is not.

I would be cool to get a bbm/skype/wlm super service but I don't see it happening.... The only way I see it happening is if ms can acquire them at a very low price.

Try it in an AT&T store. The OS is the same on every device.

i know i'm a little late, but best buy has had them around me, or you can ask the mobile guys and they usually pull one out. Thats where i kinda fell in love with it, just not ready to jump until post mango and see how things settle out

There's a large contingent of users who like the Blackberry style and feel, and the qwerty portrait nonslide. It could really push the business features of the WP7 OS, like the EMail and Mango's messaging service and Office (If Microsoft fixes it!)

The Venue Pro is similar to what the Curve Touch/Torch should be, but I am skeptical if Dell will address the problems with Venue Pro or release a new WP7 phone, so if RIM will pick up the torch, they will have a good segment of market immediately.

It'll be interesting to see how much carriers are going push next patch of mango phones now that MS owns Skype..
From my understanding they don't like it very much.. hopefully MS can mitigate their fears about it..
well Microsoft will certainly need to mitigate the carrier's fears else they won't subsidize it. Microsoft barely got Verizon to pick up just one model, as it were. Nokia doesn't have that relationship with US carriers so the onus will be on Microsoft to do the convincing.

Besides, we haven't heard of, or even gotten leaks of, the next batch of phones yet. We know Nokia is coming eventually, maybe even before this Christmas this year, but that's more likely to debut in Europe, with only one model I'm guessing. It doesn't matter too much, as Microsoft has assured that all the current WP7 devices will be getting Mango, but new hardware would help a lot to attract attention. Microsoft can't very well advertise 'Mango' on TV, can they?

RIM has trouble getting their handsets out in a timely fashion while 'only' trying to optimize for touchscreens. I can't imagine how long it'd take them to get a WP7 device out. Also RIM's most popular device (to Crackberry addicts at least) is the Blackberry Bold series, but the screen resolution doesn't meet Microsoft's requirements.

Their software is whats mostly been needed to be optimized for the touch interface. They've had complete hardware for a while, from what I understand. Also, Microsoft had verbally committed to supporting HVGA, as Mango supposedly enabled Chassis 2 HVGA resolutions. The Bold and Curve screens are landscape HVGA, the Pearl could probably use a portrait HVGA screen in the future. The Torch and Storm/Curve Touch could use an upgrade to larger/crisper screens.

Microsoft dropped the HVGA resolution with Mango. WVGA or bust.

There wouldn't be an update for older devices anyway. None of the Blackberrys on the market support the minimum requirements. It's not only the CPU speed, but also the CPU model (QSD8250, MSM73x0, MSM8x55), the three hardware buttons at the front, the 5 MP camera, the camera button, etc.

Well there goes my theory. RIP RIM. Still, I'm sure MS will be willing to work something out to be able to take such a large chunk of the worldwide market.

CPUs i'm not concerned about. I know old phones won't get updated to the new software. Neither will Nokia's, and from what I gather RIM was moving on to new CPU architecture more similar to WP7's spec anyway

It sucks that you cant loop an individual song. I have to Pin To Start a track to be able to listen to it only. An oversight surely

Where is this coming from? RIM still sells a shitload of smartphones second to only Apple. And if I'm not mistaken QNX (their PlayBook OS) will transition over to their phones making them far more competitive to WP7, iOS and Android.

It's crazy how far behind WP7 is, when it comes to music playback. With Mango it finally, finally gets playlist creation, but I hate the new look of the player. Too bad the battery of my HD is pretty much dead, or I'd still use it every day.

Hyperbole.

Even the latest WMP and Zune Player can't loop one song out of a playlist, you need to play one song/file only for it to repeat alone.

Another dumb design by MS that is still not fixed to this date.

Look what you did dream, they're coming over from crackberry.

It's "by design", iirc. Sometimes I wish they'd use their own heads instead of brainless focus groups.

you sound so negative about wp7 these days. switching to nokia meebo, if you dont like nokias wp7 offerings? we cant afford to lose you!

I think I always sound negative. :lol And what I said is true, they're focusing way too much on those focus groups and that way they're missing some important features for enthusiasts, like making screenshots. And I never said I'd switch from my WP to a N9. I meant that I'd keep my LG this year, if Nokia's Windows Phones don't appeal to me. I'd buy the N9 as a second phone, a toy if you like. Seriously, switching from WP to MeeGo ... lol.

Looks just like the N9:

It adds a camera button if you watch the video. I wonder if Nokia is getting a pass on the three face button requirement. Perhaps they've developed an N9esque swiping solution (right to left to return to start screen, etc.) for WP7.

I don't think they removed the buttons. If you watch the video, you can see that there's no touch input when he goes back to the home screen. I guess they're using illuminated capacitive buttons, like the Samsung Focus.

It needs to have at least a 4" screen, but otherwise I'm going to buy whatever Nokia puts out this year. If they don't release a 4" phone, then I'll look at HTC/Samsung/LG and see what they have, since I'm not waiting until next year to replace my phone.

We know they'll definitely ship it to six European countries, but no word on NA yet. I hope it won't be much later than the EU and Jesus, Nokia, get Verizon as a partner on day one. Sure, they'll never push non-Droid phones, but it's still important to have them as a partner.

edit:

Damnit, these Nokia phones are gonna be hotness. Verizon better get one or I will be super pissed.
See? :D

Isn't the n9 a 3.9 inch screen.... while not 4 its close enough imo (assuming this is basically an n9).

It does look very nice and might well be my next upgrade but I want to hold it in my hands before deciding (and taking a few pictures in low light with the camera.... that is one thing that really annoys me with my focus)

I'm in a similar camp, I'll buy the N9 WP7 version (W9?) off contract day one if it takes pictures at N8 quality. Are there any reviews of the N9's picture quality? I'm assuming the W9 will have the same lens/ccd/camera.

Yeah, somebody fucked up big time.

Talk to anybody in Nokia, and it’s clear they’re aware of the potential if they can only get the first Windows Phone launch right. That’s why the iron shutters are down around development: as one of the product team told me yesterday, it’s “Apple-style” secrecy right now. Well known industry players are finding their sources inside the company drying up. The 12-18 month long development cycles of before – during which time leaks were pretty much the rule and not the exception – have been clamped down upon, hurried up and shrouded in a new level of secrecy.

Yeah, so much for that. :lol But I wouldn't have been hyped anyway. Using the exact same design as the N9 takes all the excitement away. "Yeah, it's cool, but I've already seen this. Show me something new".

i agree, i was a bit "meh" with the leak. I'm hoping its not what really comes out as their first phone. Dont get me wrong, its a pretty phone (the least pretty version is the black on black) but i was expecting something different.

Those concept WP7 phones Nokia showed a few months ago to me are the best looking phones I've seen on the market. I hope they manufacture them

underwhelming considering we've been looking at the N9 for almost a week now. i guess this is going to be their first phone to hit the 9 euro markets. i get the feeling the US lineup of nokia wp7 phones will be more like those concepts.

Come to think of it, if Samsung follows last year's road map and produces a sibling Galaxy S II device for WP7, I'll likely just go with that since I doubt Nokia will have anything awesome for NA this fall. I'm sure Nokia's lineup next year is going to be bananas. b-a-n-a-n-a-s. bananas.

Also, anyone heard anything at all about Mango and front-facing camera support?

front facing cams in mango is optional. i'm sure we'll see it in the high end models. speaking of this, is the N9 even confirmed with a front facing camera? if not, i doubt this is the model nokia is going to debut with in the US. i expect them to enter the market with a bang.

can some one professionally shop this with a mango home page. preferably a motion gif showing off the live tiles.

Did you guys really expect different phone? I assume theirs first window phone would be a retrofit N9, I think it look beautiful and sure beat all the windows phone 7 that are on the market right now.

Their true windows phone probably won't come until 2012.

Hmm..purrty. I want one in blue or red.

The N9 has a front facing camera, but it's located at the bottom for some reason.

the rumor Ive heard (and it makes sense) is that the front facing camera is designed to be viewed in landscape format (which would put it at the top of the screen) when rotated.

I'd take a front facing camera, doesn't matter where. 3.9" is a bit small, but I'd take it as well (that's an amoled, right?). So yeah, pretty much just ship this to my house and take my money Nokia.

it looks more like a proximity sensor than a camera. if the default is landscape it will be a nice change from the portrait format that apple has pushed on the masses. good gawd i hate seeing portrait format pics and vids.

Just curious, but where have you seen front facing cameras mentioned as optional (or even at all) in Mango?

Anybody else having a problem with a weird battery bug on a Focus?

I was sitting at lunch yesterday and my phone went from full battery indicator to completely empty giving the battery is critically low message. 8 hrs later and my phone is still going strong but still getting the low battery audio notification every 15 minutes or so.

This has happened one other time to me before I installed NoDo. I plugged the phone into a wall charger overnight and as soon as I disconnected it it said low battery. You have to take out the battery for a couple of minutes to completely reset the phone to get it to report the correct battery charge again.
