so many little details about this that just blow my mind just a few short months after NODO.

The sum result of all of the many little UI improvements is obscene.

I don't like all changes. I hate the new emoticons, for example, or the new like button, that replaced the text box.
 
With my homebrew gone I have a massive gripe. No fuggin wifi shortcut.

Also those html5 (or iphone) video streaming sites do not work. For example tvcatchup...

where are these features?

it also appears as if the keyboard got taller making it easier to hit the space bar instead of B and N now. also like the shade differences in texting replies and the time stamp

This is definitely an improvement.
 
was it here someone confirmed that doing a restore from Mango back to Nodo, reinstated their Unlock status?

You can see the new like button when reading someones facebook status. In NoDo and before it was just a text box with "Like" in it, now it's a round button with the "iconic" thumbs up icon. *dislike*

ahh, yep, that's one of those little things that I thought was always like that. :)

it's the proximity sensor that turns off the screen when it thinks you are on the phone (up to ear) so you dont accidently hit a button

Mango allow you to pin certain function to the home screen, have you try doing that with wifi option, may be they implemented it.

Did not know there is a firmware update, would be nice if someone could point me in the right direction.
 
So, thinking of buying a 2nd hand but pretty much new in box Samsung Focus tomorrow, for $320. What do you people think? Never used a windows Phone, currently iPhone 4 user.

set it up through live.com

Here are the steps I used -

1. connect facebook to your windows live messenger..
2. Wait - after about an hour or so, your facebook contacts should up on messenger in hotmail..
3. Once they do, go on your windows phone and sync your windows live and facebook accounts
4. Go into messaging settings.. and disable facebook chat
5. Leave Messaging settings
6. Re-enter messaging settings and enable facebook chat
7. Open messaging and go to Online and sign in
8. Wait a few minutes

At this point you should see your facebook contacts who are on chat start appearing.

The most I'd pay for a used Windows Phone is $200. The hardware isn't compelling enough to drop more than that, especially with the Mango launch devices right around the corner.
 
Something is up with my LG optimus. On NoDo the battery indicator would erroneously claim it was still charging after I had disconnected it from the power source. Now on the Mango beta the battery level isn't moving at all when it's connected to a power source. I hope it al least fives me a warning when the battery runs down :/

Some people always complain that I bitch too much about WP7 and even though I'm really a fan of this mobile OS, they're probably right.

But not today, because it's been an amazing week for Windows Phone 7 users.

The biggest news this week is obviously the release of the new Mango SDK and beta ROM for developers. After months of teasing, Microsoft is finally giving out the beta to developers to adapt existing apps and create new apps for this game changing OS update.

The new SDK also confirms for the first time, that front-facing cameras are supported in Mango.

25,000 apps in the marketplace!

I'm usually not impressed with new marketplace milestones, because lets be honest, there are a ton of crap apps on the marketplace and it's getting harder and harder to navigate through the spam and crapware.
This week, however, we got a huge amount of high quality apps from big publishers, developers and partners, like Gowalla, DC Comics, MLB.com, BestBuy, Vevo, The New York Times, Washington Post's Trove, Engadget, American Airlines and others.

Even Foursquare is back with their own app, after dumping the old and broken version and redirecting users to 4th & Mayor.

All of them have been published this week.
except for the Colbert app, but who cares, the app is awesome.

This definitely shows that Windows Phone got the attention from the big companies and names and is considered to be a fully competitive mobile OS, worth investing time and resources in it. The future looks even better. Now that developers are abandoning the sinking ship, they have more resources to develop for Windows Phone. /trollface

But even existing apps got better.
Microsoft released version 2.0 of the official Windows Phone Facebook app and finally added a Live Tile function and push notifications, 4th & Mayor received a major 2.0 update and Shape lowered the price of IM+ to $4.99.

“Every Nokia App will be available on every phone"

When Microsoft and Nokia announced their partnership in February, earlier this year, Nokia said they'd heavily invest in the Windows Phone ecosystem, even to an extend, where competitors would benefit from it. A Nokia VP now confirmed this in an interview with pocket-lint, where he stated that, even though some apps are exclusive to Nokia devices for a set of time, they would eventually run on every Windows Phone.

“Windows Phone 7 doesn’t need us to add more layers," he said. "But we will work hard to enhance areas like mapping, commerce and discovery.”

The move will see the company create a number of dedicated apps for the platform - and not just for use with its phones, but, surprisingly, others from HTC, Samsung and LG too.

It’s something that, so far, other phone makers have steered away from, having their own dedicated area within the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in order to encourage consumers to buy their phones over other models. Nokia, however, is breaking away from that model:

“Every Nokia App will be available on every phone,” insisted Argenti.

But surely there will be exceptions? A pause is followed by the acknowledgement that while the apps will work with any phone, some will be exclusive for Nokia users for a set time.

First glimpse at second gen device

This week we also got the first real leak of one of HTC's Mango devices.

This is the HTC Eternity and it's big. Like 4.7" big.

Windows Phone wins 3 design awards at IDEA 2011

The IDEA program is considered by many as the ‘Oscars’ of design competitions – not least as it’s judged by the experts in their field. The 20 experts for the 2011 IDEA jury were came from design consultancies, corporations and universities. After weeks previewing entries online and two-and-a-half days of face-to-face evaluation and debate they honed in on eight areas of industrial design excellence: innovation; benefit to the user; benefit to society; benefit to the client; visual appeal and appropriate aesthetics; usability, emotional factors and unmet needs for the design research category; and internal factors, methods, strategic value and implementation for the design strategy category. The results were announced yesterday…

Windows Phone 7 scored a hat-trick with a gold award in the category of Interactive Product Experiences, silver in the Research category and bronze in Design Strategy.

Quick question guys, I'm thinking of getting a Omnia 7 to mess around with. Last time there was problem with Omnia 7 getting the NoDo update, has that been all resolved and can it load the Mango beta now without any problems?
 
I clicked the NYT button above it says it's not available in my region (uk)

I didn't know that was a thing. I thought it was the same app store for everyone :|

The marketplace was always region restricted. You couldn't get Netflix in Europe, for example.

oh good point. I don't know what I was on about then.

anyway, I found the NYT app in the Zune software. For some reason a few of the links don't work but the apps are available if I search for them.
 
hey Brot, you don't want to make a new thread for Windows Phone 7 Mango Beta?

I really don't want to risk my phone for beta, may be if I can find a cheap 2nd phone, I will flash it to Mango just to play around with.
 
Those picture/app links don't work properly in the secondapps neogaf webapp when accessed from the IE mango beta. It follows the picture link (i.e. Opens the imgur page) not the Zune app link. The surfcube and metro browsers do follow the Zune but they don't redirect to the Marketplace app. Yet the IE mango beta follows the Zune link, and properly redirects to the Marketplace app, when I'm reading the regular Gaf site. Odd. The regular Gaf site is surprisingly very readable on the IE mango beta--the post text is at a large font size so no need to zoom in. And highlighting spoilers reveals the hidden text! Which is great because unfortunately bookmarklets still don't work :(
 
How do I create a playlist, edit a playlist or add a song to a playlist on Mango? And how do I add a song as a custom ringtone from the desktop app?
 
Put Mango on the wife's Focus.

The process was easy and the software is good. I'd be content with this mobile operating system, which isn't something I would have said at launch.

Now I need to decide if I want to jump on board this fall or wait a year for Windows 8 on phones. I haven't jumped on the smartphone bandwagon yet, what's another year or so?

Add individual songs to your now playing list, open the app bar at the bottom and tap on "save as playlist".

For ringtones, just change the category of a song you want to "ringtone".

you can always get a cheap first gen phone and put mango on it.

That will take some time though. I think its pretty clear that all Nokia phones will ship with their own nav software and with mango and the sensors API, 3rd party developers can code real turn-by-turn navigation software (and charge a huge amount if money for it).

OK so one cannot edit an already created playlist? and how do you change the category of a song?
 
Just got an Omnia 7, loaded it up with Mango. Chatting with people on MSN and doing all that multi-tasking with minimal effort at the same time is pretty sweet. Having Zune Pass and being able to share songs from your collections to other people with links to preview tracks just like that is pretty darned nice too.
 
I really like that songs that are available for zunepass download are now designated as being downloadable.

it removes the unpleasant surprise of encountering a song you can't download as part of your subscription.

There are so many nice little touches in mango.. for the time being I've abandoned my galaxy s II android phone... it's relegated to alarm clock duty for the foreseeable future.

I'll agree that it's not the best implementation, but saying it's dangerous is really out there. There are tons of things people do everyday with their hands in a car that don't involve the steering wheel.

Really? Wow. The asking price was $400, got him down to $320 so thought that was a good price. Hmm.
 
Has there been any word about them better supporting physical keyboards? Does anybody with the... Sprint one, whatever... tried Mango yet?
