they really do look similar.

That's news to me. Are you talking about that Microsoft + Nokia gamescom party? That was last week and really just a party.

HTC and Samsung have conferences on September 1, Nokia World is the next Nokia event. Sea Ray always had that date.
Ugh. Well, the HTC phone had better be something special.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you the brand new HTC TrophyOmega!

EEmv5.jpg

This is the HTC Omega, an upcoming Windows Phone 7 device from HTC (likely to be announced at the September 1 press event). It'll come in a white/silver color combination, perhaps with aluminum construction, and may be called the HTC Radar upon release.

Rumored to be powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 SoC (likely to be single-core), and include 512MB of RAM, the HTC Omega also features a front-facing camera, perhaps ushering in the era of Skype integration on WP7 devices for video chat.

The rumor mill puts it as having a 3.8" SLCD display and an 8MP camera on the rear. We also expect HTC to announce a second, higher-end Windows Phone 7 next week, codenamed the HTC Eternity.

I have to admit, it doesn't look bad in white.

why does it have a double chin?
Without the double chin it would look exactly like the Trophy in white. We don't want to think that HTC's design department is lazy, right?

The SoC isn't confirmed, but here's a nice tip for you:

MSM7630/MSM8655 = CDMA +GSM = Sprint or Verizon
MSM7230/8255 = GSM only = rest of the world

I think it's a good looking phone. Definitely better than anything we have stateside right now in my opinion. Curious what the other phone will look like.

All HTC phones are ugly, look exactly the same, and are generic as hell. Except the rectangular one a couple of years back, touch pro or something?

Touch Diamond (2)? Yeah, they looked good for Windows Mobile phones.

HTC phones always seemed sturdy to me but ugly yeah.

I like this one aside from the silver on front. Although not sure if a landscape keyboard is too useful in WP7.

Edit: Ok that second one looks awesome.

A white design on a Windows Phone, I like it. Seems so stark/vivid compared to the rest of the lineup. Glad the design is opening up. With this and the early colored concept Nokia designs, hopefully both will bring a nice variety for different tastes.

Any word on if Sprint will be getting one of these new phones? I seriously need to get a new phone but want to wait if new hardware is coming out real soon.

HTC has to make this phone. it looks soo good.

Anyone seen the new AppFlow app by the guys who did Cocktail Flow? Simply fantastic design.

http://goappflow.com/

Video: http://youtu.be/IrOBE2RrBdQ?hd=1

(btw anyone able to shazam that song playing in the video? Can't get it tagged. Anyone recognize it?)

Fuse RSS reader posted above also floored me. Really impressed by a bunch of apps lately.

Last, great to read MS is doing this. 'Bout time they kicked the OEMs to design some dedicated "hero" devices instead of hand me down Androids.

I know htc has a good reputation but their hardware looks very plain to me (and that phone looks bulky compared to the newer options.... lots of wasted space around that screen). I am waiting to see what nokia will show hopefully more than just the searay).

The Sea Ray is the only device for this year. Next year they're going to flood the market.

I am hoping they show more than just the searay at their upcoming event.... even if its not until early next year (there have been rumors we won't even get the searay in the states this year)

Wow, AppFlow is pretty cool and very well designed. This plus that Fuse RSS reader are really beginning to show that some devs "get" the WP concept and aesthetic.

Pretty awesome app. People need to borrow some design ideas from this guy.

Heh, using AppFlow just now on discovery mode, I wanted to see what twitter options it kicked back to me being I've never been fully satisfied with any of the twitter apps on Marketplace. The main option I've been looking for is being able to move directly to the oldest tweet after a sync so I don't have to scroll all the way to to find the last tweet I read. I want to read my feed as it happened, not backwards. Can't believe there aren't any twitter apps that can't grasp that. So I'm reading through reviews and I see this actually does it. And it reads my feed to me, I don't care about that, but still, I can sit back and a robot will read my feed. Turns out twitt is probably the best twitter app on Marketplace (for what I've been looking for at least), so now I'm fairly happy with AppFlow for helping me discover it. Again, pleased as punch on the apps lately.

EDIT: Gaaaah, twitt's start screen tile is god awful though. Bleh, a pedo blue bird looking straight into my soul every time I look at it. Might be a deal breaker. :P

According to AppFlow the most popular paid app is.. Phone 8.

That makes me sad.

That should tell Windows Phone team they need to put more customizing option into home screen.

I miss the accent changer app I have on No Do. I need to keep the phone unlock when I upgrade to official Mango.

I'd actually prefer a bit more colour like Windows 8. The current scheme is fine but it starts to feel a slightly plain after a while:

Old homebrew doesn't work in Mango, iirc.

When are the mango apps going to start flowing? I know flowerz got updated, but I'm anxious for third party apps to get updated. Every time I see my apps need updating now, I get excited, but so far, none of them have fast app switching.

Approval process can take some time, especially now that we basically have separate NoDo and Mango apps. Btw, the Xbox Live Extras app is now Mango compatible. Fast app resuming is so good.

I don't get it, didn't they just fold that app into the games hub? I got the update, but it's just the avatar part now, and I can't fast app switch back to it.

I'm really hoping the September 1 rumor is true for the official Mango release. Really tempted to reinstall the beta but I'm not sure whether it's worth it.

Even of I keep the phone unlock? :/ That's suck. I know there's Chevron unlock for homebrew that they announce awhile back, hopefully someone will write a mango compatible accent changer for mango homebrew.

In any case, Windows Phone team could spend next few months before Apollo and refine Windows Phone 7.

Didn't MS came out and said that's not happening or don't get your hope up or something along that line?

Mango beta behaving fine for me but yeah, loosing all data and have to do another install sure is a pain. I probably will keep beta until after PAX and then revert back to NoDo. It's going to suck if Mango doesn't get push in the next two weeks.

The Extras app is now for dressing your avatar and buying clothes and props. Try deleting the app and then download it again. Version number should be 3.0.0.5.3.

They said that their work is done and now it's up to the OEMs to launch the devices. Fujitsu did a pretty awesome job, if you ask me. 30 days after Mango went RTM, they have their device out there, complete with custom apps and other customizations (grey accent color).

Releasing a Mango app means freezing development of the 7.0 version. I can see a lot of developers not wanting to do that until they at least see the mango roll out officially begin.

Apparently Mango will allow you to remotely re-install purchased apps. Very cool.

Japanese Microsoft website leaks new WindowsPhone.com features

windowsphone_001.jpg

Nanapho.jp have uncovered more leaked Windows Phone 7.5 info.

This time, hidden in a guide for changing the language of the windowsphone.live.com/Home site to Japanese we see a screen shot of the WindowsPhone.com website which is not in fact live, and it shows several new features.

Firstly, it shows that users will be able to see their purchase history on the WindowsPhone.com website, and also re-install apps en masse from the site itself. It also shows that videos will now also be synched to SkyDrive and be playable from the WindowsPhone.com website. You can also get to your Office docs from the website directly.

The header also shows a link to Marketplace, making it clear we are seeing the new web-based Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Todd Brix had promised some time ago.

I expect these features will go live soon, as the mass of Windows Phone 7.5 handsets arrive.

Nice to see they've revamped the website interface as well.

Seriously? It looks amazing. Pleasantly building on the awesomeness of Metro.

I'll just quote myself, because I'm lazy.

brotkasten said:
I didn't watch the D9 interview yet, but as a Windows Phone user, I must say that I'm really disappointed by Windows 8's tablet mode. The interface looks like Microsoft kirf'd their own Metro UI, without thinking what makes it so good looking (it's more than squares, idiots). The multitasking looks awful (where can I see all my opened apps? How do I close them?) and no silverlight apps means there won't be an easy way to port WP7 apps (at least not right know) and that would piss me off as a WP developer.
brotkasten said:
I don't have a problem with the wide tiles (the focus on 16:9 for a tablet is bad, though), but I just don't think that it looks as good as Metro on the phone. I can't see many Metro references and it doesn't seem to focus on typography like Windows Phone does. I can give them the multi-colored backgrounds (okay, not really, but whatever), but animated backgrounds? Really? The other thing that bothers me are the multi-colored tiles. I love that you have one accent color on Windows Phone that is represented through the entire OS.

Right now it feels like a bad rip-off, kinda like TouchWiz 4.0 from Samsung.

So in a few ways, the updates we've wanted within the Zune software are happening online. Didn't expect that, but it's certainly welcome. I'm still wondering when/if this is going to happen, as stylistically as they managed here:

Kin Studio to be Reborn As Windows Phone Mobile Studio

Now I'm intrigued at what this new website design might entail. I'd love to have all my messages, contacts, phones, videos automatically backed up and easily viewed on a well designed website. That was the one thing they got right with KIN.

I agree on the Windows 8 comments about them sort of bastardizing the Metro UI off WP7. But then I had the same thoughts on iPad using the exact same interface as iPhone.
