While it does look wonky, XMB is simply not as well suited in a touch interface. Nor for one that has a lot of integrated services.

Hopefully they'll eventually improve the aesthetics (themes or skinning would help) ... but the utility is certainly superior.

It just looks like a slightly modified HTC Arrive (which is a solid phone but major Achilles Heel is the speaker and less so the screen size and tilt mechanism with keyboard open). I'm happily rocking my unlimited 3G on Sprint but not sure how long that will last. Sprint is in a financial rut and just sold it's soul to get Apple on board with the new iphones. I don't see myself going to AT&T any time soon but one thing I can respect about them is that they give you options. Iphone was their bread and butter for a while but even during that time they still had a healthy dose of Android and had the most WP7 phones available (I believe). As it became more obvious that iphone was making the leap to other carriers AT&T seemed to have diversified even more. Kudos to them.

eh, I wouldn't give AT&T that much credit. Their Windows Phones came right around the time when the rumors of the Verizon iPhone were being confirmed in the media. The first decent AT&T handset, the Atrix, was announced at about the same time the Verizon iPhone was finally officially revealed (and though it didn't actually get released until months afterwards it still came with crippling prices and software restrictions to boot). The only nice thing about AT&T is that I get an unlocked GSM phone and use it on their network. And they carried a few webOS phones for a while so that's a plus, I guess.

HTC is currently set to deliver an HTC Titan-like smartphone with a 4.7-inch display and 4G LTE to AT&T — the first LTE Windows Phone we know of — and the release date is currently slated for February 5th, so we should expect a CES announcement.

Probably just a different Titan model, kind of like the Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Isn't that the same as the regular Galaxy S II, just with LTE?

Edit: Apparently not. Interesting.

Nokia Lumia 800 tops o2 Germany best selling list

The Nokia Lumia 800 seems to be selling relatively well, probably thanks to the sheer size of the marketing campaign that the Finnish handset manufacturer has embarked on across Europe, and soon the U.S. Websites such as Expansys in Australia have the Lumia 800 ranking #1 in top seller lists. The handset is also packing a punch in Germany (on o2 of all carriers), beating the Samsung Galaxy S II, Nexus, and more.

Nokia Lumia 800 top selling phone at Expansys AU

In what has to be a great sign for Nokia (and Windows Phone), the Lumia 800 is the top selling phone at the Australian site in the last week. And the popular Windows Phone has some stiff competition to boot, beating out the Amazon Kindle Fire, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the iPad 2. The black, 16GB version is selling for a very reasonable $578, which is helping sales.

While reports of the Lumia 800 selling well have been coming in, they're mostly anecdotal. This information from Expansys seems to be the first, really solid evidence from a reseller that Nokia's marketing efforts are paying off and resonating with the public.

Nokia Lumia 800 also a bestseller on 3 UK

Despite all kinds of analyst speculation of poor interest, the various retailer phone rankings all over Europe continue to indicate the Nokia Lumia 800 is selling very well.

The latest is 3 UK’s online store, where, when the phones are ranked by “Bestseller rating” the Nokia Lumia 800 is ahead of the much cheaper HTC Wildfire S and also cheaper iPhone 4.

However, nothing of this is true.
The UK launch of Nokia’s Lumia, its first smartphone based on a Windows operating system since its tie-up with Microsoft, has disappointed operators ahead of its US launch. It failed to break into the top 10 handsets sold in the UK in its first weeks on sale in November and December. It has sold only narrowly more than Nokia’s more basic “Touch and Type” phone in the period, even after a UK advertising campaign rumoured to cost more than £20m.

Numbers would be great, but we'll have to wait for the financial report in February (I think).

Nokia also released a statement regarding the Lumia 800 battery problems.

On Monday 12th December some of our customers started to comment in various social media that the preloaded diagnostics tool in some of the Nokia Lumia 800 phones was showing lower battery capacity than expected. We immediately started to investigate these reports and can now confirm that while the battery itself is fine, a software problem on certain variants is limiting the phone’s ability to access the full battery capacity. We want to stress that this issue has not been found to affect the recently introduced Nokia Lumia 710.

The good news is that as this is a software problem it can be easily resolved. The planned software update in early 2012, as well as including many performance enhancements, will also include a fix that will enable the affected phones to access the total battery capacity. For anyone who does not want to wait for the software update, Nokia can arrange for a replacement phone. Anyone who requires any further clarification should contact Nokia Care (Care contact details and locations can be found at www.Nokia.com/support).

Anyone who wants to know if their phone is affected can run the battery status test from the diagnostics tool already installed on their phone. (The tool is designed for service use and only displays approximate values.) Dialling ##634# opens the diagnostics tool. By accepting the disclaimer and then selecting ‘Battery Status’ from the list of options, anyone will be able to see their available battery charge capacity. If your full charge capacity reads less than 1000 mAh then your phone is affected with this specific issue and you may find it is necessary to charge your phone more frequently than normal. Once the software update has been applied, you should experience much better battery life. In the meantime here are some tips on how to increase your battery performance and you should also make sure you are using the charger that came with the phone, as older chargers may not be as effective at charging the new Nokia Lumia 800.

I thought Microsoft is widely hated outside of the US, especially in Europe.

People buy PS3s over Xbox 360s and choose Apple or Linux over Microsoft.

Bing is terribad there compared to the US's.

They treat mainland Europe with a complete lack of regard yes, the UK not so badly we at least get an almost feature parity, but I've been known to moan about things that don't work just because of my region which is BS, but it's a practice that will bite MS in the ass if they don't get on top of it, which I think is where Nokia comes in

Very true. I live in Austria and the lack of everything regarding Xbox Live and Zune hurts big time.

Bingo.

That's exactly why the Lumia phones come with Nokia Music, Drive and Maps.

Not really. I'm pretty sure that Windows still has a 90+% marketshare.

And while we are PlayStation land, we also are Nokia land.

Quick question which hopefully someone will be able to help with.

I have a metric shittonne of notes store in Outlook (Exchange), and whilst my phone syncs with exchange for email / calendar items, it doesn't seem to sync my notes. Or at least if it does, I can't find them. Does anyone know how I can get my notes syncing? Ideally I'd like to keep them in Outlook / Exchange if possible, but I can move them if I have to.

Note that Nokia phones are considered first and foremost Nokia phones and not Microsoft.

bad news... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/synchronising-outlook-notes-tasks-to-windows/0867997d-3f0a-4b96-8850-661ccc5c664a they need to be moved to onenote

I don't know why MS didn't just integrate One Note with Outlook. I can't bring myself to use ON when my whole life and work is based around reminders in outlook.

which reminds me why can't we pin tasks or appts from our WP Calendar to the Start screen?

Is no one on GAF developing for WP7? I know it's a barren field but it should at least be going upwards

That would not work on a touch screen...
With some small adjustments it would be heavenly for swiping. You could go to any item you want in 2 seconds with just two swipes (in one motion)

Two very good apps:

1) MyEncyclopedia- developed by the guy made Fuse. Very fast Wiki app that also uses location servies. Also is free with no ads.
2) FaceSwap by MS research. Doesn't always work with every picture, but when it does it is pretty neat.

Someone explain the logic behind this

Take your pick.

- Windows Phone 7 is a terrible name, in part, because it's long. It wouldn't have really fit in the space given without making the point too drawn out.
- Since it's a Windows Phone it's implied it supports Messenger. Let's ignore the fact PC is mentioned.
- Messenger/WL team is entirely separate from the Phone team. They had a collective brain fart and forgot about their own company's product due to it's lack of market penetration.
- iPhone people can't actually talk to WP7 people. Exclusivity!
- WP7 is already dead.

Someone explain the logic behind this

There isn't any. As I said in a previous recent post one of the big blocks WP has is the fact that it's own company treats it like a red headed step child sometimes. How can you expect the masses to get behind your platform when internally have of the people either laugh or act like the platform doesn't exist.

Messenger and FB chat are built in, what would be the point of mentioning wp7 in that ad?

Edit: I thought it was an ad for the app on different platforms. Wp7 should definitely be mentioned in the device list.

Since we're kind of on the subject, how does the phone decide what to use to contact somebody if you have them on FB, MSN, and you have their mobile number?

Does MSN take priority over FB, which takes priority over SMS/MMS? Because I don't see any way to choose which you use when you send a message to somebody you can contact in multiple ways.

Edit: Oh. I guess you have to sign in manually before it even gives you those options. So I guess when I was trying to do that before I was just texting :lol Looks like it defaults to Messenger.
