Windows Phone 8 Launch Event |OT|

This is all terribly disappointing, the way MS has handled the release of WP8

It mostly started from the announcement of the 920 and we've just been strung along for months till yesterday's underwhelming reveal. I'm not sure how else it could have been handled; the WP8 launch was always going to be end-October, and the early reveal of the 920 did take away some of the iPhone 5's spotlight, but there's been so much secrecy from MS in between this period (which has also hamstrung the phone manufacturers), leading up to yesterday's non-event...at this point, I think all the WP fans are just drained. I certainly am, and the mood of this thread has been straight Debbie Downerish from start to finish.

the sad thing is that the hardware is awesome, and the OS is still good. It's just the way they've handled this launch, its just depressing as shit for a fan.

Why would you even want a better GPU when there's no games?

Can anyone theorize why they're doing it this way?

I can't believe that was all they had to show at the event. Instead of fixing/enhancing the things that people have requested (different volume level, remove items from multi-task, universal search, VPN, context search button, notification centre, option to leave icons at the top, calendar and many more they think everything is fine as is.

Kids Corner is a good idea but why don't they go all the way and just add user profiles or guest account which would do the same thing? Does the Wi-Fi stay connected now? To me they haven't shown why they should be a leader in the mobile space and it really seems like they have nothing to offer. I still plan on getting a Nokia 920 but it sucks waiting and waiting for them to fix all these small things.

It absolutely will be. But will Nokia?

Incompetence + a workforce dedicated to exhausted ideas that culminate in piss poor execution.

This. Some good ideas but poor planning and execution makes it hard to believe they have anything big planned after this.

Hey but we are supposedly getting that screen shot functionality. The one Microsoft said no one really want. Seriously totally agree with you.

The whole Windows Phone 8 launch really deflated all my hype. Good thing, I love the Metro UI and rather use that than iOS or Android.

I can't believe how inept they are in the mobile space. I mean this isn't their first time doing it as they had Windows Mobile all those years. they should have take all the good functionality and things that they learned from that and applied it to Windows Phone but it's like they had amnesia and didn't remember anything.

what happens first, apple reaches 1 million apps
Windows phone reaches 300,000.
Nokia dies

I know Nokia said they have a say in the direction the OS is headed but I think they need to force MS to do more, especially when the company is on the line and they have no other options. But hey, maybe all those rumors about Elop being a Trojan horse are true after all and he's keeping the stocks low so MS can buy them.

This seems very likely. Microsoft-branded phones in late 2013.

Well, since Windows 8/RT and WP8 now shares the same kernel, maybe we actually will see more apps on both sides with the sharing of code and ease of porting assets.

The best designed apps on Win8 so far are from developers who did the same on WP7, so that's at least some truth into that.

I hope so but with them releasing the SDK so late I feel that it is going to take a long time to get things rolling.

Thank you Microsoft for actively blocking me from purchasing one of your products (920). I don't want to pay EE's extortionate prices.

I might just pick up a Nexus 4 to go along with the Nexus. Well done for losing a sale MS.

Im in the exact same boat as you. It appears to be the same when you look on Nokia UK's Facebook page.
They have lost out on a lot of sales with this decision.

Have they actually said it's exclusive to EE? with the 800 you could only preorder it on vodafone and every other carrier would tell you they had nothing to announce, then on release day O2 announced it and released it at the same time.

Nokia's Facebook says:
Get your hands on the innovative Nokia Lumia 920 with EE and Phones 4u from the 2nd November!

And then theres this link to Cnet
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/nokia-lumia-920-ships-today-as-ee-exclusive-bad-for-wp8-50009625/

If you want to buy the Lumia 920 you can also get it from Phones 4u, though you'll only be able to buy it on an EE contract.

The launch date of Lumia 920 and 820 seems to be November 22nd in Finland and other Nordic countries according to a leaked ad from a Finnish online store Verkkokauppa.com. Official confirmation is expected tomorrow.

Has anyone ordered their 920 through EE yet?
If im an existing Orange customer can I just transfer straight over to EE (since its the same company) or will I have to cancel my orange contract and then start a new one with EE?

Nokia dies

Both iOS and Android will be at 1 million apps sometime in 2013.

Windows Phone, who knows? MS has bet a lot on the W8 + WP8 synergy. The survival of the WP platform will depend on how the synergy works out.

Nokia will not die in 2013. They have enough cash on hand to last another year. If they survive through 2014, it's unlikely Stephen Elop will still be CEO and Nokia will abandon Windows Phone when he is ousted.

What's the chance the Rogers Lumia 920 will be easy to unlock online? Should I just wait and ask later or are unlock codes usually available near the week of release?

Do we know yet if MS has added any more payment options for the Marketplace? I know they have PayPal support in the Wallet but does that extend all the way to the Marketplace? How about prepaid credit cards? I can't purchase anything on WP7 because I don't have a credit card. It's absolutely infuriating.

They have PayPal support on the Windows 8 app store so it gives me hope, but no one has confirmed if there is PayPal support on WP8 too.

so, still no orientation (rotation) lock in WP8 :/

http://pocketnow.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review

search the comments for "orientation", the reviewer gave the answer :) apparently nobody at MS uses their phone in bed... this is so freaking annoying!
Ugh that's probably one of the biggest problems with Windows Phone. I can't hold my phone at a slight angle lest I want it to change orientation.

Why do you have a folder called C:\Users in XP? The issue probably is the fact that C:\users is needed in Win7/8.

Well my laptop crashed last week and I had vista installed on it.. I only had an XP cd available so I figured I'd install that and then upgrade straight to Windows 8. I kept my old vista files in the XP install so I am thinking thats where its from..
