Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Gintama 103-105

This wasn't as good as the Yagyu arc but it still definitely one of the best arcs yet.
Thank Sorachi that Yamazaki isn't really dead. His "funeral" was pretty funny.

We need more shinsengumi gin. I doubt it'll happen though. That was basically an excuse to indulge in the original concept of Gintama for a spell.

Every time that Wall of Shame list gets posted at the end of a thread I'm always saying to myself I'll post more in this next thread so I can be higher in the list. It never ends up happening though. In this case I guess losing is winning.

No thanks, I'm good. Looks like this show is not for me.

Ano Natsu 7

I think this is the first time I've seen
a nudist in anime.

Poor
Kanna
, every episode brings her closer to losing. :(

Nisemonogatari 09

Huh. I expecting this to be a lot worse based on some of the impressions here so far.

I dug this episode, at least a lot more than last week's (toothbrush antics aside). The character interactions were entertaining (aside from the drawn out Rock-Paper-Scissors conversation) and the two new characters introduced seemed pretty interesting. No sign of Tsukihi so i'm kinda curious how they're gonna handle the last two episodes.

Also, Shinobu is awesome.

Aim for the Ace 14:
Some epic glares going on up in here. This show really demonstrates effective ways to communicate the feelings of characters without words, particularly in regards to facial expressions. It's quite refreshing. I also was pretty surprised by the revelation at the end of the episode. Looking forward to seeing where everything goes from here.

Three out of three Koyomis agree about...uhh...something really improper.

With only two episodes left, it's taking entirely too long to introduce
the villains for the arc
. One of the things that I'm going to remember most about Nise is the really uneven pacing, though unlike previous episodes that basically went nowhere, this one was at least visually stimulating and had good Nisioisin dialogue.

I think I should be much more horrified about how
Karen and Koyomi casually tease each other in a somewhat flirtatious way
, but I'm enjoying their interactions too much to really care. The show has done a surprisingly good job of giving Karen some more personality since the previous episode in spite of
or because of?
the gratuitous fanservice. I like the overwhelming energy and lack of forethought that seem to define her; she's no longer just the generic genki imouto that she was in Bake and early Nise.

This is the level of interaction between Koyomi and his sisters that I had been expecting since the beginning of the show, and while it appears really late
for Tsukihi
and late in general, I'm glad that the show is at least partially realizing Karen's potential as a fun verbal sparring partner for Koyomi.

I think we've also set a record for moe character with the
longest verbal tic
ever. I'm still not used to
villains
in my -monogatari, but we'll see how this plays out.

What show would this be?

Maria+Holic Alive. This actually might have aired around the time that the final two episodes of Madoka did.

Maria + Holic.

At first I liked it, then it kind of went meh toward the end of the 1st season, then it continued on with the meh-ness the 1st season ended with the 2nd season, that I can't remember why I liked it in the first place.

The second season is almost unwatchable
I still watched it all
. I'd go so far as to say that Maria+Holic as a whole is SHAFT's worst show, but for all I know it might just be a faithful adaptation of bad source material. I don't think I can ever bring myself to find out.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai 12
Random Sena pic to end the series.
So, last episode and still no one has any friends. Well, this was the attempt to try and make Yozara a tiny bit appealing and I guess it worked. I mean, if I completely forget like the last 11 episodes, sure. I am ok with the whole reveal being like
OK, back to being not friends.
But, yeah, I liked the show. I'm ok with more episodes. The characters were fun to watch and it wasn't as fanservice-y as I thought it would be, so good job show.
And, Rika going overload on the new guy's relation to Kodaka was the best part of the episode.

I wonder what show I'm going to start next.

Yes, you completely ignore Dance in the Vampire Bund.

I love how they handle the concerts in this anime, they always look cool the glowsticks camera angles dance choreography and the size of the arena. Otherwise really nice episode and that
epic Hibiki punch

Really touching after the song when she was getting all emotional and heard Kanade's voice and declared she wants to reach more with her music and sing for herself

Nisemonogatari 9

Basically a repeat of the Kaiki introduction, down to the people who showed up in that episode IIRC. At the very least you get to
Kanbaru's house
. There was some nice symmetry in that.

It's weird that they seem to be implying that these
two new characters
are strong, when Kaiki's whole identity was in the fact that he was, despite
having some power, a fraud
. I'm hoping that it's another bit of misdirection and that we'll get another
verbal showdown
. That would be infinitely more interesting than whatever they could come up with.

Araragi trolling the
audience
and then being trolled himself is just great though. It's the self-aware character's self-awareness coming around to smack himself in the face -
almost literally
!

So how do you think
Hibiki will die?

Didn't mean it to be a bad. It'll just be more appealing to me to watch it if it was true than what it currently seems like going from most of the PV.
Ah, I didn't mean it that way. I was jokingly asking who would be disappointed in such a development in a general manner. The question wasn't targeted at you specifically. I'm fine with either way the show is going to be, but the trolling is amazing. I will love Sunrise for it if they pull it off.

This show is infinitely better when Shinobu is around (preferably clothed. Even if only partially.)

Hit-and-run trolling never gets old.

Chihayafuru 1-2

Man, this karuta thing seems to be the most boring game ever, but this show manages to make it look cool.

To quote the great jason: "I feel like, at this point, we need a devil Araragi and an angel Araragi pop up on his shoulders. The angel would whisper, “That’s your sister!” And the devil would whisper, “That’s your sister!"."

This is why his is the only anime blog I read regularly.

Well him and Aroduc, but for Aroduc it's a combination of seeing how horrible his tastes can get and following any of his newest translations (Alchemy Meiser: The God Captor is addictive as hell why can't I stop playing it)

SHAFT have a real talent for continually delivering endings to their shows, even if they're hampered by the length of the season, budget or other concerns. Heck, even if they can't get it on TV they'll make sure to do a web stream of it, allowing fans to finish up whatever show they're watching by the end of the year. It's hard to ask fairer then that.

Chihayafuru 1-2

I'm hooked on this series but I can't put my finger on what about it actually makes it so compelling.

Have you not witnessed Nisemonogatari?

Self-professed, then!

Ano Natsu 8

Fuck you Kaito, you're such an ass, abandoning the best girl. At least something will be happening next episode, even though
based on the preview, it will just be Kanna giving up. :(

Here you go, Cajun~

It's worth pointing out that Chihayafuru doesn't really have any traditional hooks along the lines of 'his girlfriend is an alien' or 'they have to save the world by piloting robots'. It can only rely on the strength of the characters and the story that is told through their interactions: it's about the writing and the direction. In other words, it's simply a good story that's told well.

In anime the stories are usually something a little bit more extreme to help take advantage of the medium itself, so it's a bit rarer to see a straight 'drama'.

I imagine she will have to sing her final song to save either tsubasa or miku from ryoko, or she loses control again.
It was stated a few eps ago that Hibiki is the only person probably capable of singing the "final" song without any ill effects as the relic fused with her body and is therefore perfectly in sync her.

Kanna may be a better character than Ichika, but that isn't saying much. She's still the author of "How to stay in the friendzone forever", a title who precepts are followed fervently by many a character in these romance shows.

Agree with you there. Jason is the most entertaining anime blogger.

Everyone is the audience insert in this thing. That's why it's amazing.

Speaking of which, the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OVA was also suitably self-aware.

Such a weird thing to think about this show again.
