Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Sora no Otoshimono: Tokeijikake no Angeloid
I didn't mind the recap and it was decent enough, though the last half hour was a bit too serious. I have no knowledge of the manga, but it feels like they bungled things.
What exactly is/was Hiyori? An angeloid that was inhabiting an avatar? How and why did she meet Tomoki when he was a kid?

Hiyori meeting kid Tomoki still hasn't really been explained, but it just seems to have something to do with his connection to the angeloids in general. And yes, her real body is still sleeping, so the one she uses on Earth is an avatar.

Well, for stuff that's not animated in HD, I don't mind DVDs.

Stuff that aired in HD and is DVD-only just annoys the hell out of me, though.

Warning, Warning, you're tripping the Pizzaroll alarm. Every show before the digital era was 'animated in HD'.

Does Sailor Moon holdup?
Considered rewatching it for the first time since it aired on toonami but don't want it to destroy my nostalgia for it like some of Kai has done to early DBZ for me.

Yeah, I think it does. It's actually funnier and weirder than I remember it being 15 years ago.

And remember folks football is a team sport.
It is? I thought all you need is one magical player who can do everything.

Wow, that was a very good first episode. At first I sort of scoffed at its premise but it's explanation for it was written substantially well and upon further reflection, I'm thinking this show really has the potential to maturely explore its interpretation of child soldiers.

The Tsun is connected to the dere bone.

I'd love to see this turned into an anime parody of a childrens show where the hosts sing this and do a little dance. XD

Except she has shown her dere side since Episode 1. She's pretty tsun, yeah.

Yeah, I agree she does show some dere from time to time. It's just that her tsun is so extreme that people completely forget it.

So I guess instead of tsundere it's TSUNTSUNTSUNdere.

EDIT: I just saw Kagari use "hnnnnnng" on Twitter. Our influence is spreading!

Kiki's Delivery Service

Easily one of the better and more charming Ghibli movies I've seen.
It was kinda sad that she couldn't talk to Jiji anymore but not only did it make sense as a metaphor for growing, it was also a rather subtle and fitting way of fleshing out Kiki's character development.

I had to take off my glasses and wipe my eyes twice after reading this. Picking up neglected shows doesn't mean picking up incredible shows. And we aren't talking Glass Fleet incredible here.
if you're gonna aim for something you may aswell aim for the top!

It's probably fare to say that the dub didn't "hold up" at the time that it was made.
Mostly because it coincided with the rise of internet services that were more than happy to tell us Americans what we weren't getting at the time.

Curse you, Hitoshi Doi.

He could just be talking about stuff from the early digital era, blurays of those shows are often awful upscales.

That would be a very generous reading of his post. Most people don't mean that though, they think that anything before the age of 'HD digital animation' was 'made in SD'.

I have a horrible feeling this wont work at all, because I don't imagine many people will put their money where their mouth is.

I think a Kickstarter to raise funds to pay off Mari Okada so she can retire from the industry will be much more successful. It would also be more beneficial to the industry, creatively. :p

Seriously, how the fuck does this person keep getting work? She's awful, I'm sure there are others in the industry who realize this?

She's agreeable and efficient. That's a vital asset in any writer, not just in anime, but in the entertainment industry in general. Not creatively, but in terms of business.

Man, that arc just kept going and going - not that I really mind as it's usually the case that these kind of arcs are my favourite part of the show. I wasn't really a fan of a number of the recent story-arcs, but this Yoshiwara storyline has worked for me. It did fairly well in that it had it's own self-contained story that also managed to tie-into other main characters and the wider world (well, at least as far as it can be done in Gintama). Good stuff.

She basically does whatever the director tells her to, that's why. And she's capable when churning out adaptations. The real problem is hiring her to write original scropts.

Brave 10 - episode 1

Saizo is chilling in the woods and comes across a girl being pursued. Her name is Isanami and she is HNNNG AS FUCK. Well it turns out she is a
princess who escaped from her land after watching every single person dear to her murdered in cold blood
. Saizo agrees quite reluctantly to let her come with him and so begins a hell of a lot of problems.
This is actually pretty interesting all things considered. Will watch more of it.

The anime is decent if you stick with it and can ignore Isanami at times, Saizo never fails to deliver and the 9 around him are interesting, even Iga of the ice.

Man, I wanted to like Brave 10, but after suffering through nothing is going on and one episode where it was pretty much SAIZO! over and over, I couldn't take it anymore. But, at least you thought the first episode was decent. :p

I was almost at that point to but I just plowed on.

Don't be discouraged if you find episodes 2-5 more difficult to watch; there's great stuff on the other side.

Bail out while you still can. Isanami's presence is diminished in subsequent episodes and when she is on screen, she's an annoying one-note character. Brave 10 is a putrid heap of terrible fights and anemic yaoibait and gets progressively worse with each episode. Watch Sengoku Basara instead if you haven't seen it.

I dont think its that bad, the fighting and character design and interactions is its saving grace amidst the standard plot, annoying Isanami, and rehashed music.

Persona 4 22

They should just end it here.

I dont know about that, I want to at least how characters deal with it.

Makes sense I suppose. Just frustrating she isn't a better writer then. :/

Actually, I could see a really funny anime come from this. Take the idea of "The Producers" and run with it.

"She hated the otaku with a passion, disgusted by their very existence. Deciding that the purpose for which she had been born was to destroy the otaku she jumps straight into the lion's den, joining the anime industry as a writer. Her goal, write anime after anime that are awful and contrived that the entire industry will collapse, causing the otaku to die off after losing the anime they subsist on for survival.

But something happened she did not intend.

Rather than destroy the industry, her work became a massive hit! The otaku ate it up and bought her shows in droves! Her plan having backfired, she must decide between trying a new tactic to destroy them, or accept defeat and make her money from the very otaku she despises!"

:p

...

Nah, probably would be terrible. But then that might very well help it sell oh fuck I've lost it.

Queue obligatory Yoshiwara arc AMV.

I really liked the setting in this arc. How often do you see a shounen anime set in a city of prostitutes and not even try to hide that fact?

I really enjoyed this series. The way they open the story with that hauntinly beautiful OP song and we see one of Henrietta's missions. When you realize the crazy truth about how and why these children were turned into assassins right off the bat. Its some really depressing stuff, but I couldn't stop watching it. I liked it enough to buy the second season along with the OVa but sadly, I haven't gotten around to watching those. The first boxset did come with a nice cloth poster which still hangs in my room today.

Terrible? dude this is a pretty neat idea. At least from my point of view. It's unique at the very least and would be potentially hilarious. It would take some fortitude to create and publish such a show though.

Well it's one of those shows that would have to walk a REALLY tight rope to work.

Anyhoo

Toei is currently withholding the licensing rights from the rest of the world. There's the old ADV release but the quality is horrible. Pioneer did a much better job but they only cover S, Supers, and the movies.
I don't think TOEI is withholding anything, at least not in Europe where, since early-2011, they have been presenting that franchise with its own special stand in various licensing fairs (or trade shows) throughout the continent.

TOEI Animation Europe is very interested on this promotion, and particularly on pushing for new emissions on TV and later use this to sustain a marketing of new products, in a campaign including a renovation of the licenses for merchandising and (of course) digital disc releases. For example, German licensee company m4e AG apparently has planned this kind of disc releases after the series airs on its country, and other companies are going to follow suit.

This move has been dubbed a "relaunch" or "return" of Sailor Moon:

I see that Lain already mentioned the case of Italy... expect something similar in many countries...
except probably Spain!

Senki Zesshou Symphogear 10

Chris for best Symphogear confirmed and her main song is my favorite. I loved the action scene even with the friendship bonding moments breaking up the action, quite touching.

But with Ryoko Sakurai essentially the antagonist, I wonder if she has been summoning the noise? Is she also a Symphogear, the scene when she healed herself like it was fused to her like the parts are fused to Hibiki?

This better happen in the Us.
American Otaku will probably cause violent uprisings if Europe has all the fun and Sailor Moon remains a no-go here.

Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature

3kEJ5.jpg

For all the furry attention this gets, it's actually not terrible. If anything, it is painfully average with a few moments of ridiculousness thrown in. The character design is probably some of the worst I've seen in a long while; it looked like they took Tezuka-esque ideas and just did terrible terrible things to them.

Yeah, I should have clarified that I guess, but I was tired and went to bed.

I actually did mean stuff only from the post-cel world. High-def scans of cel-based stuff is the best; I actually prefer those (by a significant margin) to most modern HD digital animation. As such, all those SD digital shows are depressing to me from a collector's standpoint. They'll never look as good as shows only a couple years older.

The guy gave him his pants because Akira flashed his crotch to him. And then there's the female police offer scene... This show is ridiculous. At least there wasn't any engrish!

Awesome first episode.

I'm not exactly knowledgeable about display formats, but wasn't there an "in-between"
resolution that was better than SD but not quite full-HD?

There was 480i, then 720p, and 1080i, and then finally 1080P. So anything made with resolutions other than 480i but not quite 1080p would still be considered HiDEF but not necessarily true HD. Or is there some other meaning to those words?
