Grrr stuck at work so can't watch konosuba T.T
It's pretty funny to see this discussion of Maid Dragon with MetroidPrimeRib, dimb and others reference every other series / genre label but not directly say Oh My Goddess!. I mean c'mon guys! Is it just so obvious that you don't have to bring it up?

I don't think having a girl being the magical girlfriend of a girl somehow makes the concept novel either unless there is some sort of commentary on being gay either. As it is the gender of the main character is not really relevant. In the end the show is pandering to men so who is that stuff really for?
And if the animation does a good job with the attention to detail how much does that matter if the jokes do not see the same careful curation? We get a skit that ends with the maid dragon stripping, then we get some skit about how the clothes are actually her scales, and then somehow she changes into an outfit that was bought for her. Drop the thinking meme here.........
Oh My Goddess was different though in tone and comedic approach. It's not as gag heavy for starters as Maidragon.
Konosuba - 2
With all the hype for season 2 I thought I'd try going back to this after dropping it last year, some sensible chuckles but nothing much else for me. I'll give it one more episode since the party is all assembled by the end of the episode.

The animation does look worse. I could care less though as the every frame could be off-model and I would love the show just the same, if not more. This was a great S2 opener in that while it both serves as a somewhat clever recap of the events in S1, it also gives a motive and setup for S2.
I appreciate all the reaction faces this show gives.
I've literally never read/watched a single omg thing

What is going on with AnimeGAF today? I can't believe what I am reading!I've literally never read/watched a single omg thing

I won't disagree on tone, but everything else is a match.
- Ordinary-ish main character (although because this is 2017 I guess they're now a maid otaku)
- A supernatural main character who becomes entangled in the life of our protagonist
- A supernatural main character who has to deal with living in the "real world"
- A focus on the relationship (?) between these two characters
- Magical hyjinx
- An expanding cast of magical characters (if we're going the Oh My Goddess route this will include a little girl (already covered) and a sultry older women.
It's kind of a well-worn formula. Sure, there's some tweaks to it here (more gags, more otaku perv stuff) but it's the same thing.
yeah maidragon checks all those boxes

But, will the MC libido be magically inhibited too?
Are those game-like transitions and titles new? I don't remember anything like them is S1. They look pretty slick either way. Shame the animation looks so rough but that's the nature of the show I guess.
That could describe so many shows nowadays, Monster Musume for starters. Hell, I think Tenchi Muyo would sorta fit into that description.
The execution though is almost completely different.
Edit: Wait wouldn't Urusei Yatsura fit into that definition too?
dropped
In anime/manga you can usually trace the roots of the genre all the way back to that one work which really 'defined' the genre - and it's often surprising to see how little has changed over the decades.
If yall wanna fuck the dragon just say so
This season I have a very nice spread:
Tuesday - ACCA
Wednesday - Konosuba S2
Thursday - Kuzu no Honkai
Friday - Blue Exorcist S2
- Rakugo S2
- Seiren
Saturday - Sangatsu
Sunday - IBO2
Basically something to watch every day except on Monday. Friday is stacked aha.
I feel like there is probably something from before Ah My Goddess! that fits this pattern.
No. Ah My Goddess! and Maid Dragon (So far?) appear to take place in 'the real world' but some supernatural elements creep into the setting. The main characters are living basically normal lives, but the 'alien girlfriend' element brings in some unusual flavouring. Both works, to some degree, have played on the concept of this magical creature trying to understand/deal with mundane reality.
Tenchi Muyo (which everyone should watch the original OVA's of - really) doesn't feature a grounded world at all. There's battles, action, space ships, aliens, robots, the main character has super powers and his school gets blown up pretty early on. There's an actual plot that develops over the course of the OVA's as well.
The world of Urusei Yatsura is strictly insane. A truly anything goes wonderland of madness featuring elements of every genre imaginable. It has no grounding. We don't have to worry if Lum will 'fit in' to 'reality' because the first episode is about aliens invading the Earth. There is no 'real world' to contrast with.
I'm really enjoying this. The show is a lot more charming than I thought it would be, and all three of the main characters have developed a nice relationship together. It's good to see Ran warming up more with Ichigo and Aoi, and I want to see that relationship continue. The episodes are having a lot of really nice expressions, and it's just fun to see the characters working towards their dreams. I've already gotten myself wrapped up in their stories. This is just an example of a sweet little kids show that puts a smile on my face, and has some nice lessons along the way.
I'm not old enough to reference that.
Great point, and we're getting to one of the things I didn't like about this episode. How is this ground in the real world when you have a dragon flying in plain sight or a flashback where she's literally fighting with god? One gag has her literally blowing up the apartment when trying to clean it.
Oh My Goddess is much more focused on keeping a realistic atmosphere with just tinges of the supernatural. How much of Kobayashi's workplace did we see this episode? Even a minute? The focus is primarily on the supernatural hijinks. The dragon doesn't even bother hiding her identity and shows it off to Kobayashi's co-worker while in OMG, it was tried to be kept on the down-low.
