Steins;Gate

I would say Steins;Gate, Madoka, and Fate/Zero are the best and most accessible anime of the past couple of years. Anyone who has been out of the loop for a while would probably be satisfied with one of those choices.

[edit] But especially Madoka if you want dark and stylized. Steins;Gate if you want sci-fi.

I guess what i'm looking for is more towards action. Stylized, Dark, Sci-fi, something along those lines.

I haven't watched the anime but I've heard some negative things regarding the ending and other things. Read the manga?
Yeah the anime sort of just ends. It does so on quite a tease too. Basically sets things up teases "something bigger" then goes "You're not getting any of that" Typical anime ending really.

Viz wont support something that doesnt make money. Hyouka is out.
That's circular logic if I ever saw it.

Nakamas.

Don't forget You Are Umasou or Hells either.
I still haven't seen Hells though that is fairly cheap to get from Japan and would cost as much as getting it from the US probably. It has ENG subs too.

I actually did before you posted this. Not for myself, mind you, but for the Branduils of the world.
Hell they need a break sometimes!

I used to love DBZ and adore Studio Ghibli films. I'm open to anything really. Perhaps some dark sci-fi kinda stuff or some nice fantasy. idk, just acclaimed anime ^^
Macross Plus. Also, Cowboy Bebop if you haven't seen it.
Edit: you haven't, wow! It's pretty much one of the best shows ever. I'd watch some of the show before the movie, or the characters won't make a ton of sense.

I'd also suggest anything by Satoshi Kon. My favorites are Paprika and Perfect Blue.

Also, maybe check out Evangelion or its new remake movies, it's another highly-rated series.

Oh yeah. I have this in my queue/backlog. Probably will hit it up soon.
Be sure to do it with the original English Manga Ent. Dub as it adds a certain charm to it that the other audio tracks are sorely lacking. Still, even without the dub it's easily one of my all time favorite series ever, if not the favorite.

Watch Cowboy Bebop. It's sci-fi, and it's great.

Speaking of Bebop, it seems that Keiko Nobumoto may have come out of "retirement", or whatever it is she's been doing for the past eight years or so since the last thing JWiki lists her as doing. She's wrote the script for a TV drama called "Beyond The Bakken Record" that aired at the end of January. While I have no idea if that means she'll start writing anime again, at least she doesn't seem to have retired completely!

Find a way to watch the series and watch it. What is it like? Hmmm... I suppose it's about four bounty hunters in space. It's a gritty pseudo-western and an absolute masterpiece. Watch it— you wont regret it.

I just purchased the film as the series are quite expensive, how does the film hold up? If i enjoy it a lot i'll go for the series too. Also just picked up Macross Plus - The Ultimate Edition for £2.78 on amazon! Appreciate all the suggestions guys, i'm looking into them.

Think that dub actually goes back to U.S. Renditions (which no one remembers). It's fantastic though and fits the whole larger than life mentality of the OVA.

Don't watch the film before the series. It's pretty much a sequel.

I love the film, it's very well-animated and the music and setting are great. The plot is a bit weird, and I don't know how good it will be without seeing the show first, but it holds up well. If you can even see 3 or 5 episodes of the show first, it might be better.

Edit: watch bebop dubbed!

Macross Plus is actually by the same director+composer, so I hope you like them, heh.

Oh, you're a Brit! Well, that narrows things down then, because most suggestions you can't buy here.

You really shouldn't watch the Bebop film until you've seen the series. It's getting re-released at the end of this year in the UK which is why it's so expensive to buy at the moment. If you can hold off until then, try and wait before watching it.

You should probably look into:

Akira - if you've not seen it, this basically was the sci-fi anime movie of the late 80s.
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - first box set is about £16 on Amazon at the moment. Thoughtful, dark sci-fi with philosophical themes and a lot of action.
Darker Than Black - again, first box set is around £16 (the second series is not as well regarded as the first and the first stands alone perfectly well). About a Chinese super-powered "assassin" in a future Tokyo.

If you have not done the survey yet, please put down something along the lines of releasing the rest of Naoki Urasawa's: Monster in the last response box. This title deserves having the rest of the series available in a physical release.
Oh shoot, thanks for the reminder. Haha.

K
No. 6
Guilty Crown
Accel World
Sacred Seven

Are worth looking into.
Why ??? why ???

Acclaimed anime he said .

Not this ...

Actually ranged from 5 hours to like 17 straight.

As for occupation, choose from below:
  • anime blogger
  • button factory worker
  • international jewel thief
  • regulus' pool boy
So ..what's your next target ... don't forget to send your advance card to the police :)

Well, I'm pretty sure there was some kind of licensing agreement between the two or something.

Not with the butchered soundtrack Viz took an immense shit on it shouldn't.

is the anime network a trusted company? the site looks sketchy as hell and im having doubts signing up for a subscription. forms and sections dont load properly, everything looks like a mess.

Most likely. I just remember renting the first two eps on VHS and watching them over and over and thinking I'd never see that dub to conclusion until Media Blasters tucked it away on their DVD release.

By the way, if you ever get a chance, check out Shin Mazinger Z as Imagawa did the same thing with Go Nagai's characters as he did with Giant Robo and Mitsuteru Yokoyama's characters. TV budget but very awesome in its own right.

Yes their part of Sentai Filmworks/Section23 partners for streaming their hd subs and dubs, and simulcasts like Tamako Market and Sasami-san@Ganbaranai , and etc.

You are always welcome! Mr. Sadamoto's refrain will only take you a couple of minutes more than the pilot did, so go for it soon (http://www.evamonkey.com/route20/).

Thank you for this as well. :)

Interesting. I don't remember seeing wonzo's post from last year, for whatever reason. Also, that art looks a little bit like that Midori OVA that people keep freaking out about. lol

Hitting last page will probably do that, haha.

I did a quick check and it doesn't look like the character designer worked on that Midori show. It might be more of a show you'd be interested in so you can give it a shot if you want.

I'm glad you checked it out and enjoyed it. I also didn't pick up the Dezaki thing at all so that's actually pretty cool!

Yeah, that was a neat little bit of trivia. I forgot to mention in my impression that for almost everyone coming across as kind of a jerk to begin with, the grandparents were always good people. It was nice to see the changes in the characters as well, such as her brother Naoto.

Aye, maybe i should have stated as much. :p

A lot of the stuff mentioned seems reasonably priced on Playtechasia, £16-17 each for complete boxsets of Cowboy Bebop and Steins;Gate so i think i'll go for them. Cowboy Bebop is also English dubbed whereas Steins;Gate is only subtitles. I'm gonna start with those two as well as Macross Plus and then move onto Darker than Black and Ghost in the Shell once i've finished. Thanks for all the wise words GAF, i look forward to diving into the world of Anime. :)

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1979)

Always enjoyed this animated version that was broadcast on TV from way back in the day. Seems mostly faithful but somewhat ugly at times too. Why am I bringing this up given it isn't anime? One, drank too much again. Two, because when I considered what an anime Narnia would be like, I was left with the uncomfortable feeling that the below would be an accurate prediction as to what anime Aslan would be like:

I've never heard of the site but 5 seconds on Google tells me it sells bootlegs. You might as well just torrent or illegally stream the stuff, it'll be better quality that way, and the same amount of money is going to the content creators!

*This is not an endorsement of torrenting anime!!

Yeah, her brother was a bit of a dick at the beginning but he turned out to be anything but by the end. Hell, the only people that weren't Jerks when introduced other than the grandparents (sans
them ignoring their younger daughter for obvious reasons
) were Asuka's friend, Megumi, the goat, the bullied girl and the teacher. lol

Most likely. If you ever get a chance, check out Shin Mazinger Z btw as Imagawa did the same thing with Go Nagai's characters as he did with Giant Robo and Mitsuteru Yokoyama's characters. TV budget but very awesome in its own right.
That's been on my list for a while but I'll definitely get around to that sooner rather than later now, thanks for the heads up!

Aww damn, you're right. :(

Guess i'll just start with Macross Plus for now then.

Bootleg sellers are the scum of the Earth, I hate them. =< sorry I can't give you good advice since you live in a different country. You could always try looking for used DVDs at stores and trading sites online and stuff. And if importing is cheaper, try that, watch out for fakes, though.
