The seedy underbelly of idol culture influencing the purity of Precure. I didn't ask for this.

Surely I'm not the only one who noticed Makopi lip-synching? She's a hack!

Well that's some fourth wall breaking.

This was a pretty awesome episode. The school gets hijacked by a vice principal who doesn't actually wash his hands after going potty and before becoming a horrible monster. Penchinon is the scariest villain in any show ever. Between his creepy ass laugh and his terrifying child-sailor look, there's really nothing about him that doesn't scream "YOU WILL HAVE NIGHTMARES." Also, I guess Gai really does love Mikoto, but, uh, she's like the homeliest girl on the team. Oh, and the fat kid's older brother is a massive fool, leaking state secrets to an elementary school student.

GTO 20

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT? THE PEACE THE EVENING BRINGS? So Murai has a secret admirer and I guess she's really tall (5 10 is pretty big for a Junior High student) and all I can think is how incredibly awful life in Japan seems. People are always torturing each other in terrible ways on this show. Now, I mean, Junior High is an awful time to be alive, but no girls beat me, wrote on me, and left me for dead.

The Cresta survived this episode.

Gundam 00 20

What I did not like about this episode and related moments:
1)Saji's incredibly shallow worrying about his girlfriend losing a hand. I mean, seriously, Louise has no hand and they both whine up a storm about it. What the hell? Some love they have. It's just a HAND.
2)Ali is like, the absolute worst imitation Gauron ever. He's like Gauron if Gauron spent his time telling you point blank how bad a guy he is, instead of being a bad guy. "I love war!" Ugh.
3)Team Trinity is awful, just, seriously, aside from Johan, they're horrible characters. Why can't evil/rival teams ever be tolerable?
4)Horrible Haro is Horrible.
5)The sudden claim that Pretentious Being was trying to unite the world. Love that Junior High writing. "You guys united against me? I WANTED YOU TO DO THAT!"

Good things about this episode:
1)
Saji's older sister died. THANK YOU.
2)Stupid Sexy Lockon was in this episode.
3)Would-be-Char ain't need a Gundam to kick butt.
4)Something that posed a threat to Gundams.

Okay, now for a moment of total honesty: Just as I feel I might have found Arc 2 of Gundam AGE if I was a kid, I think I'd have enjoyed this show a bit more if I were like, 10 years younger. Now I see right through it, but if I were 14, I can see how I'd get taken in.

Given there's an english manga release of freaking Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, a manga that relies almost entirely on Japanese cultural references and/or hideous puns that don't translate...

Well besides that Kodansha Comics USA has all but basically killed off the series in the US and they have been skimping out on the translation notes in the last few volumes they released after killing off Del Ray, pages of translation notes are probably not a thing anymore.

(I'm still bitter)

To be fair, Zetsubou actually tanked and Kodansha USA stopped releasing new volumes.

For what it's worth, that seems to be dead in the water; Kodansha hasn't released an English volume of SZS since vol.14 a year ago.

edit: beaten multiple times, I see. Using the hanging.gif here would be too appropriate, so I'll refrain from doing so.

Man, this was a really good episode. The focus was primarily on George, and his relationship with his butler, Raymond. Now, Raymond isn't as great as Norman, but he still proves the honorable tradition of Butler is a SUPER badass one. Together, they defeated the Mirabo guy, who was kinda off his rocker with DG cells. Nothing quite like the charming tale of a rich super hero and his butler to warm your heart.

Aside from that though I never noticed these supposedly copious references in the SYM I read, but then again only a few vols are out there in english

I actually would think some of the religious jokes are more suited to translator's notes...

They took 14 vols to realise it tanked? Or was there someone who had it as a pet project there who got fired

Not even sure if it did tank. That was during the time where Kodansha was severely understaffed and I just assume they sweep Zetsubou under the rug and hoped no one noticed. Bastards.

I'm going by what they said in one of their panels

12:28:38 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: continiuing sayonara zetsbou past 14?
12:28:53 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: that's a hard one... it started off good, and then it plateau'd and then declined
12:29:01 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> we had to step back and think if it was viable to sustain the series
12:29:05 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> at the moment it's table is what i'll say
12:29:08 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> it's really hard to work on
12:29:23 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> the references, the fact checking, the poor translator who has to work out all the text, and the editor who has to check
12:29:47 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> it's a really tough book, and for ones that are so time consuming, it's hard to justify it for something that maybe not even breaking even, i don't know the specifics, but i know it was a coern
12:30:13 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> it's not canceled, it's tabled... we know there are still some diehard fans out there, (missed part)
12:30:02 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> there are no immediate plans
12:30:04 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> it's not dead

Well this is not how I even envisioned the final arc. Tsunamori is just failing big time and like previously, she needs to pass the constructive plan baton to someone else. Rather disappointed as a whole with her performance and this atrocious writing.
Unbelievable that she suggest to split up yet again. The last time that happened Kagari died and now, of all the characters in the anime, Masaoka? They were even having a near bonding time across multiple episodes bridging their gap and now for Ginoza to have a most likely roboarm (which does look cool, imo) on top of watching his father dive to save his life right in front of him, was just a bit too much and too intense. Certainly other options were available than killing him off and permanently wounding him? Only good thing in this is at least my third or fourth favorite character survived (Ginoza). I pray Shogo and Kogami survive and dont kill each other off
.

It felt like there was new music though.

I think there are more references in GTO than in SYM. I remember the (french) GTO volumes having like 1 or 2 pages explaining terms/references. Didn't prevent it from being funny and it wasn't a chore to read them.

Don't want to sound like a nag by bringing up a day old issue, but I thought we were trying to move away from giant picture posts that show off all the cool bits before people even have a chance to see the episode for themselves.

I suppose I could start hiding them behind links. Generally though, if there's a show I want to watch I'll do so before I read the thread.

They are having a free screening of Wolf Children tonight at MIT with a Q&A with the director Mamoru Hosoda. If I knew about this ahead of time I would of went.

Wow, these guys spend a LOT of time talking to each other in their giant robots. I guess that's not out of the normal, but it feels more noticeable here. Maybe because I'm not used to the villain talking to the hero so soon on. Something I don't like is that the Zeon flag is red, with a white circle with a black emblem. Mostly because I'm tired of the Zeon getting flanderized into Nazi Germany. In MSG they were more like WWI Germany, but for some reason everyone else makes them sound like Nazi Germany with the Sieg Heil and gratuitous German and now the blatant Nazi flag. I mean, yeah, Degwin Zabi compared his son Ghirin to Adolf Hitler, but I should think that's one more reason not to see the Zeon as Nazis. Even their leader found them to be odious, and when he compared Ghirin, it wasn't meant as a compliment. That Ghirin took it as such was a sign of how crazy he was, but everyone else in the show treated Ghirin as super crazy. Heck, PURPLE MASK WEARING Cacelia shot him in the back of his head because she thought he was nuts. Nobody in the Zabi family liked Ghirin.

I'm talking about this because nothing happened worth talking about in the episode. The girl in it was like, "Save my babies! I mean Gundams!" and frankly, I have to ask: why, three years AFTER the Zeon are defeated, was the Earth developing a Nuclear carrying/defensive Gundam, and why, if there was no combat going on and the thing was still undergoing testing, was this thing armed with a live warhead?

That, more than anything, bothers me. If we've been at peace for 3 years, the Zeon presumably all defeated and no cold war on-going, why was a Gundam armed with a live warhead?

Oh, and in case you're keeping track at home:
Villains who have used or intended to use Nuclear or other WMDs in their plans:
-Ghirin Zabi
-The crazy jerks from War in the Pocket
-Whatever this guy in Stardust Memory is named
-Patrick Zala of ZAFT
-Muruta Azrael of Blue Cosmos
-Lord Djibril of Logos
-
Gilbert Durandal of ZAFT
-Zechs Merquise with the White Fang

Supposed heroes who have planned or used nuclear or other WMDs in their plans:
-Flit Asuno

I think what happened to Aika pretty much sucks. Actually, before even making that statement I have to address that this show has taken a nosedive. Anyway, going back to what I was saying I think Aika's last line in this episode does ring true in many ways. Despite being somewhat tragic and the circumstances looking not so good in many ways things can be viewed as a comedy due to the people around you. It's almost as if it's a parody but at the same time I think it's very sincere to think of the show in that regard.

This is why people need to read back through old pages of the thread more often when they're catching up!
In more important news, for those living in or around Boston:
Director Mamoru Hosoda will appear at the New England premiere of Wolf Children, which will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge on Thursday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. Hosoda will be available for questions after the screening.

The screening event, which is free and open to the public, is part of MIT's Cool Japan project, which promotes examination and discussion of Japanese media and popular culture. On the same day as the film screening, MIT Professor Ian Condry will also speak at 4:00 p.m. about his new book The Soul of Anime.

Finally, the end of volume 7, and the scene I've been waiting for all season -- the words lost in the wind.

"I mean, aren't we all friends already?"

Kodansha you fuckers. First you cancel Moyashimon after two volumes after absorbing Del Rey, now this. Guess it's time to ebay the six or seven volumes I have lying around and hope that some manga collector who doesn't care about incomplete series gives me something for them.

Most of the reason why I no longer purchase manga volumes is because the risk of series being dropped before completion seems vastly higher than anime.

If anime has taught me anything, the reason I'm not a harem MC is because I didn't make promises to marry girls when I was elementary school age. ;P

But yeah, I'd suck at making a harem anyway seeing as I wouldn't want that.

I made such a promise but i dont know her whereabouts..
Damn me .
Still i'm not even 30 so i still have a chance.

That's because Manga is vastly longer than anime is usually lol.

This scene was as good as the one with Keno and Shino later on in the event. Shino consistently makes me laugh. I liked the developments going on and was pretty alright with the golden eye lady plotline.
Sousuke's shadow getting it seemingly was nice, love his new dual eye color. Hyped for the preview, more otp

I'm saddened but unsurprised. I wanted to at least finish my localized collection but jerkoffs are absurdly pricing some of them.

Cry for me. I have a box of Vols 1-10 Tokyopop Love Hina books lost somewhere in the US Postal System. It's been in there for a year and a half at this point and I'm never going to find a cheapass deal like them again.

Still awesome, they really nailed the light-hearted tone of the manga. Even if it's live-action they managed to put silly/cartoony things that are just hilarious.
It's still pretty faithful even though they tweaked a few things.

"My Little Messiah Can't Be This Moe!"

Pretty enjoyable. There's clearly some jokes and skits here that would work better in a manga format but there's something very charming about this adaption. Not all of the humor that playfully pokes fun at Buddhism/Christianity work out the best but the absurdity of the concept and what happens on screen is hilarious enough as it is. The voice acting is fantastic and the interactions between the two main characters are great. The art direction is really nice too, as everything is usually quite detailed and vibrant. Looking forward to seeing the film and might be checking out the manga too since the premise is just too silly to pass up.

How is religious used in this, if at all? Do they make any "don't die on me, I can't wait three days!" jokes or anything like that? lol
