Hey, some good animation in this episode!
I wonder who is the person Nitta wants to talk to... His father maybe? Heh.
Curious to see if Mutta will use the gun.

Huh didn't realize there was a promo for Muromi now. Character animation is pretty nice. Shit looks ridiculous, anime of the Spring. Forget thine shitty cg mecha shows and watch mermaid anime instead.

I suffered through enough Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch as a student to last a lifetime of mermaid anime :p

Although one day I MIGHT try and give Umi Monogatari another go, I guess. It did have some nice SatoJun vibes...

If I was old and cynical anime internet fan I'd point out that the last thing anime needs is more LN adaptations.

Then someone else would come and point out that studios have to make money and this is the kind of thing that actually sells.

Then someone else would go I don't care about the commercial side of the industry, what I want to see is good anime.

To which the reply would be: anime isn't produced in a vacuum. It takes time, money and people. One has to accept the commercial realities of anime production in this day and age.

The dodgeball game looked really good, especially the beginning of this episode, can't wait to see how the improve upon the endgame of this arc.

The sakuras have bloomed but the official start of Spring isn't until Wednesday.

For our purposes however, Spring starts April 3 or so when MLP shows on TV Tokyo.

The most impressive thing about this episode is how effortlessly it executes it's vision. They make it look easy to craft a powerful story when obviously it's extremely difficult to pull something this good off. I can understand why people were calling this the episode of the show, or the season, or the year - it's just about perfect.

In terms of the writing and the pacing, I was particularly impressed with how they tell not one, but three love stories in a single episode and how they balance them all out across the episode without letting any of them to topple over or disrupt the others. This balance is achieved very neatly by bookending the episode with the love story in the past, keeping the middle of the text focused on the love story in the present and still managing to carefully sprinkle out a little story for Mochizo where appropriate. This means that there's actually a love story for (nearly) every generation of the family.

It's also demanding, I imagine, to keep the tone for this kind of episode in check. Anko's story has to be a little bittersweet but still warm while the story of Tamako's father has to have that weight to it without it becoming a cheap downer storyline. Nevertheless, they managed to pull it off.

I really respect the creativity employed in telling the story of Tamako's parents. Most directors would either a) dedicate an entire episode to a flashback or b) continually crosscut to the flashback throughout the episode. Here Ichirou Miyoshi does neither of these things, instead he uses a wide variety of methods to tell the story: a straightforward flashback, a music video, a montage flashback and even some photos are all deployed to tell the audience this particular story. The use of all these different techniques weaves a very rich picture in a very short amount of time and keeps the audience interested throughout. Bravo.

Speaking of directorial technique, one thing that I kept noticing throughout this episode was how deep all the frames were. To explain my point a little, most of the time when you look at a scene in an anime (or even anything on film) most of the motion is between the two sides of the frame. Action tends to take place in one horizontal plane and that can make a work feel really 'flat' because the image has no depth to it. However Ichirou Miyoshi seems exceptionally concerned with allowing characters to move from the back of the frame to the front, or vice versa. This depth makes the world feel less like a drawing and more like a real place because characters are moving through a three-dimensional space. It's used really effectively in Tamako's house to create a distinct sense of space. Just look at this series of images which goes to create three layers of depth:

TamakoMarket99_zps3cf681c5.jpg
TamakoMarket910_zpsaf611fdd.jpg

Or these which demonstrate a character moving through the depth of the image:

There's some other minor things I enjoyed, such as the use of POV to bond the audience to Anko:

TamakoMarket913_zps40f08c40.jpg

The way this high angle shot combined with Tamako's father's posture makes him look like a sullen teenager:

Or the visual gag with the people in the background:

Good stuff.

I think that a flaw of mine is that I find it far easier to put into words why I dislike something than why I enjoy something--sometimes I wonder, as absurd as this sounds, if I subconsciously seek out bad shows because I'm more likely to have something to say than I am in response to something that I enjoy. This is probably bullshit self-psychoanalysis because I don't feel like this is true of me, but who knows. I've admitted in the past to essentially no longer trying to make "good posts" because I'm vastly outgunned on my ability to apply educated interpretation and criticism and to what I watch, but I'd hate to think that I've sunk that low, hahah.

also I'm not fishing for "cmon madp you make plenty of good posts!" I'm just being honest about my slide into mediocrity.
COME ON MADP YOU MAKE PLENTY OF GOOD POSTS, DAMMIT!
I want to hear your opinion because I want to hear what YOU think about something even if you happen to say the same things others did earlier. There are complete or perceptive interpretations but also opinions someone values for different specific merits closer or akin to that person. This is not a competition of dissecting a work the very first and spotting the difference, but to hear what those you care about and respect think about it.

Evangelion 1.11

Note to self: Pick up Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion at ShutoCon if available
It would have been a greater success if at the time they would have finally released the series and companion films on Blu-ray!

That's sad.
At least lately he has opportunities of working in what he really likes! And don't worry too much, market trends also come and go...

I think a lot of people feel this way. Isn't that why people say negative reviews are more fun to write? I know the same is true for me. Usually, when something is done well, all the mechanisms that make it work are almost transparent to the viewer, while when something sucks, the sore points stick out. Personally, I can talk much more 'intelligently' about why I hate MGS4's story than I can about why I love its early levels, for example.

Writing a review of something remarkable that properly captures its quality without breaking into empty superlatives is an incredibly difficult task. That's why a lot of my series reviews tend to be really short. I never have any idea where to start.

Why do you guys keep trying to trick me into watching Sasami?

Every time I pick anime by thinking with my dick, I wind up disappointed. So I've given up on that.

Neat post. I really liked the episode but it didn't occur to me that it would be something like "best of the year". The way you put it makes it seem like it really is flawless. It is undoubtedly the best entry in Tamako, and most surely in Winter too.

Little bit of trivia- Ichirou Miyoshi is a pen name for Yoshiji Kigami, a member of Kyoani's board of directors and basically the godfather of the studio. This sole man is the main reason why Kyoani started to dabble into animation (they initially were simply a cell painting studio), and it's pretty safe to say that everyone in the studio has been hugely influenced by him. The use of the screen as a 3D space is a particularly interesting example because a lot of directors in the studio are fond of emphasizing that (Takemoto especially overuses it, I think even more than Kigami).

As you can see, the guy's no hack- he even animated for Ghibli and Akira at the time (although his Akira scene is not on that video, no idea why since it's very refined in the spirit of that movie). No wonder some of the best episodes that the studio churns out are handled by him.

Otona Joshi no Anime Time - Kawamo wo Suberu Kaze

otonajoshi1.jpg

This was a pretty interesting story about a 33-year-old mother returning to her hometown with her 4-year-old son after 5 years abroad in America thanks to her husbands work. It's during her stay with her parents that we get a glimpse into her past thanks to her various flashbacks, most notably involving being her struggle with a loveless marriage thanks to her work obsessed husband, her eating disorder manifested because of that, and an affair with a former Junior High classmate whom she wishes to revisit. I kinda saw the revelation at the end coming and there was some truly awful filtered photo's and videos passing for background art but I still enjoyed this overall and I'd highly recommend it to others looking for something more different than usual.

I'm definitely looking forward to the three new specials.

Lttp but GOLDEN TIME LN GOT AN ANIME?

duKmsxw.jpg

For those who don't know Golden time is by the author of Toradora!

Golden Time, huh? What's this about...

Tada Banri, a newly admitted student at a private law school in Tokyo, found himself completely lost after the opening ceremony, trying to find his way to the freshman orientation. Just then, he ran into another lost freshman from the same school, Yanagisawa Mitsuo, and they hit it off at once. As they were hurrying to their intended goal, with hardly any time to spare, there appeared in front of them a beautiful girl holding a bouquet of roses. The girl whacked Mitsuo across the face with the bouquet and handed the flowers over to him. "Congratulations, Freshman!", was all she said, and then she left. The stylish, well dressed, perfect woman that had swung at Mitsuo was his childhood friend, Kaga Kouko. As children she had promised to marry him one day, fulfilling her dreams. In order to escape from her, Mitsuo had gone out secretly and taken the entrance exam for this well known private college, but now there she was in the freshman orientation hall. She had taken the law school entrance exam too, and had caught up to him there.

...yep, that's definitely from the same author as Toradora!

This makes a lot of sense given the competency of the production and direction in the episode.

Kamiya Naoki is a young player from a professional basketball team. But due to his relatively smaller size and his tendency to crack under pressure, he is unable to show his true skills on the court. Meanwhile, Shirakawa Riko is a cheerful, strong-spirited music college graduate aiming to become a professional violinist. One day, Riko finds Naoki's lost cell phone on a bus, and their meeting begins a friendship that eventually turns into love. However, Naoki was already considering marriage with his current girlfriend. And it doesn't help matters that Naoki's coach has fallen in love at first sight with Riko!

Some REAL vibes in this drama.
I thought it was a good start, Naoki and Riko are likeable characters, it'll be cool to see them reaching for their different dreams.
Yoyogi is an asshole and his face seriously pisses me off. I mean, look at him!

You just want to punch him in the face!
The cast is good aside from that guy though.

If I remember correctly he still uses another pen-name, as is Fumio Tada, even for recent works as an animator. Two different pen-names apart from his given name... I wonder, why is that?

It's better they learn now. Not knowing what eva is will lead to the disaster that befell me when I watched Eva in early high school.

Nah, that's where the fun lies!

I'm thankful that I managed to get through it all unspoiled. So the fact that someone who feel that it's okay to drop unsolicited spoilers, well, it just strikes me as arrogant.

Funnily enough, I just finished watching Eva 1.11 for the first time myself. Which was interesting.

Sgt. Keroro Episode 220.

Didn't like Part A very much, it was a lesson about global warming disguised as a Keroro episode. Part B was nice, Keroro negotiating with an evil ancient Keronian weapon with sandwiches was hilarious.

Pretty weak episode overall, next episode looks great though!

It's a mystery, it's really kind of strange since he does appear as Kigami on other places and everyone knows that he's in Kyoani.

He did use his real name for KA credits on the K-On! movie...

Dokidoki Precure - 07 End

Though a bit underwhelming for a series finale, this was nonetheless another stellar episode.

More than anything else, I've been consistently impressed by the direct continuity of these episodes. In other series, unspecified days or weeks would pass between monster of the week appearances, but here, every episode picks up directly where the last one left off. Episodes 2 to 4 all took place in one day; after 7, only four days have passed in total, I think. This means that the villains actually attack more than once a day! And in this episode, one of them
actually went personally to fight, since he knew the monsters were unreliable
! It's so refreshing.

The battle scenes have maintained a high level of quality as well. The animation is never too derpy, and interesting tactics are often used. This episode's
two chandeliers being dropped on the bad guys in one episode, in the same room even
, was at once hilarious and effective. I also appreciate that the Cures attempt punches and kicks before resorting to beamspam. It's not quite Futari wa or Heartcatch levels of melee, but after all-spam-Smile, it's pretty darn good.

The characterization was also handled much better than in recent seasons. At this time in most series, we'd have learned one to two quirks or interests of each main character; in Smile, we didn't even find out some of the core relationships (like Beauty and March beng childhood friends) until another thirty episodes in! But in Dokidoki, two of the four (Heart and Sword) are already significantly developed and have backstories and real motivations. Rosetta's intro episode gave a small bit of depth to her as well, so only Diamond remains a bit plain.

But why must all the good series die young? Is it really too much to ask for fifty episodes of this qualty, Toei? ...Don't answer that, I know it is. I'm sure the movie, at least, will give Dokidoki a chance to make our hearts pund once more.

Overall, I give this series a 9/10, on par with Heartcatch. I hope the next will be just as great.

I pray so deeply that I'm wrong, but... The baby thing is finally in the preview... What was shaping up to be the best Precure ever will almost certainly fall into the depths of mediocrity next week... I'll watch anyway, but I'm preemptively mourning the loss.

Caught up with HxH last night and Episode 71 was great. The praise for Killua came out of nowhere though since I thought, whilst he have done cray things to maintain his coolness, they all had a great effort winning the game.

Next Episode looks good, Bomber and all.

Japan (well, those rankings) really do empathize with the blandest characters.

Tamako isn't even the most interesting person in her own family!

Top 10 Anime:

1. Tamako Market
2. Psycho Pass
3. Magi
4. Love Live
5. Sword Art Online
6. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
7. K-ON!
8. Vividred Operation
9. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
10. Robotic's;Notes

Finally Alibaba over Aladdin, great pick, though would hope Judar would have showed up. Kirito is still amazing, cant wait to hear his durb voice.

How is it that both Tamako and her show are #1, but the stalker points are so crappy?

The mysteries of anime industry...

Newstype readers /= people who buy anime

Obviously. Nekomonogatari sold 50k first week but you don't see any Monogatari characters in the Top 10s for example.
