Is there anything HG Wells didn't do first though? He beat reality, he beat Half Life, why wouldn't he beat some random Japanese scifi novel? :)
He beat the Bible!

Too bad all the adaptations of Time Machine rip out the moral complications and allegory of the novella anyway.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
I wanted to make a joke asking why they are going to Britain if Yui wants to go anywhere with yummy food, but I didn't want to anger BGBW.
The joke would have been on you since Britain is a mixing pot of the world's cuisine so insulting British food is insulting food on a global scale. HA HA HA.

And as for SAO questions I should probably re read my old posts for all the questions I came up with, but I guess the most important one is this:

What happened to pizza-kun?

It's too bad Ikuni never capitalized on the opportunity for penguin homoeroticism with MPD given the lightning storm of controversy surrounding a children's book about 2 gay penguin dads a few years ago.

Tangopenguin.jpg

Last night there was a minor discussion about an Italian psychiatrist who warned parents that watching Sailor Moon would turn kids gay. So...maybe Ikuhara just likes to create his own controversies? Even stupid and ridiculous ones.

On the subject of From the New World's ending, there's a couple things left a bit unresolved.

The fate of Maria and Mamoru is kind of left hanging although we can assume they are dead.

It's not left hanging at all.
As mentioned in episode 17 or so, they ran DNA tests on the remains that Yakomaru brought to the village - they were definitely Maria and Mamoru's. They're definitely dead, and it's not just Yakomaru who says that.

Do you even lift, kid?

Meh. I feel like i'm missing something. Like some kind of backstory that gives the dialogs/character interactions more substance. Bad adaptation or intentionally confusing?

There might be some spoilers for Django Unchained in here too! Warning!

I really love how the ending put that into perspective. All the unease, speculation, and lack of certainty in the show was really played up not for a twist or for plot gimmicks, but to basically put the viewer in the perspective of the people in this alien setting. They really did a great job of indoctrinating the audience over the course of the series, so it pays off by the end.

The most disturbing part about how the show ultimately ends is that the characters basically sacrificed anyone they perceived as "not human" or "not us" just to preserve their existence and way of life. The plan to sacrifice Kiromaru, kill the "Fiend", and destroy Yakomaru's plan all made sense from the perspective of those who won this war, but any satisfaction of watching Yakomaru's defeat after hating him so much for most of the series is shattered by the realization that what we hated the most about him was also what vindicated him at the very end - he simply proved that he was just as smart as humans and had the same fears, desires, and ambitions humans have for his race at large.

The comparison with Django's plot is actually pretty disturbing. Kiromaru would actually fit well in the role of Samuel L Jackson as the "house negro" of sorts, while Yakomaru was pretty much a Django character. The story could be so easily reversed with a few minor tweaks, showing how heroic the revolution was, and the bond formed over the years between them and their Messiah - from birth.

It's hard to justify any of the specific actions on either side, because it's just so revolting and unpleasant, but I guess that reinforces how realistic this depiction of "war" is. There are no real winners morally, and the only way to move on is to try and forget the atrocities committed in the name of "justice" by the winning side.

Well, it was somewhat grey in that regard and that feeling is definitely reflected in Saki's statement of "I don't know what's right anymore." I think we were all left thinking that what Yakomaru wanted wasn't wrong but the way he went about it was and a lot of his justifications were wrong.

On the flip side, you talk about Yakomaru exhibiting a lot of human qualities and a lot of his argument is hurt because of it with the viewer. He wished to end the slavery of the queerats, but in turn he enslaved a human to do it. I guess it does reinforce the human characteristics, but I think had they won and wiped out all humans, then their new tool, their Messiah, would have easily been thrown away. That's even more painful by the fact the Fiend saw the queerats as her own kind. It really just show he was falling into a all too human vicious circle. I think that was shown by both sides by the end.

I thought it was an interesting series for the most part, but the last playing of "From the New World", the memories, the scroll on the wall, and the laughing at the end really got to me.

Who doesn't like penguins?

I actually still love this guy.

Question for SAO dude:

How is it that no one in anime, manga or light novels can actually write a regular relationship successfully. Is is because they all have zero actual relationship experience and are overcompensating with their creations?

More likely catering to a specific audience, though I'm sure it's a mix of all sorts of factors.

I think back to what I said back after watching episode nine or so--that I was glad a show like this was being made--and after finishing the show, my mind is unchanged; I'm glad this was made; I'm glad someone took the challenge, and the financial risk, to do this; I'm glad I was present as this came to a close.

Think I'm going to avoid talking about specific details in hopes for keeping this brief. Just that, despite the doubt about the direction taken in episode 21, in the end, after a few stumbles, it wrapped up in a commendable fashion. Thematic resolution done with bittersweet clarity and a fair share of irony--the very people who suffered so from the implements of their society, helping raise it anew--more than raising questions, SSY isn't afraid to answer them, and it's in the answering where the challenge lies. The full moral dilemma of their society is brought to its inevitable conclusion. The issues raised by
the 'fiend'
is reflected then in the final revelation. I guess just why this final episode works so well is due to how the show is written, really--the 'big' ideas overtake the small; as Abraham Lincoln once said, dat backstory.

So yeah. Good 'syfy' as firehawk is so fond of saying. For all its faults, loved it.

I'm assuming they're all upper-middle class anyway. Although remember when Yui tried to get a job to buy a guitar? That was the last time there was any semblance of reality in their world.

Well there's the episode in the first season where Mugi gets a part time job at the McDonald's knockoff restaurant.

There was also the time they get a part time gig at that maid cafe, but I suppose that's not really something that normally happens. lol I'm not even sure if they got paid for that, not that it was their goal anyways.

K-on is a story about the decadence of the bourgeoisie and how they contribute to the intentional dumbing-down and consumerist enslavement of society. It's very meta.

StrikerS is the series that would benefit the most from a movie. Imagine taking most of the boring training stuff out and making the best parts about the series better. That would probably take a while though considering the best parts of StrikerS was the last quarter of the show.

The only way to improve StrikerS would be to cut every single thing out and start over from scratch.

Whatever. Yamauchi haters are going to eat it when his new . . . Gonzo . . . harem romcom . . . ragetown . . . anime starts airing.

Dammit. I had blocked out the fact that Yamauchi was getting wasted on that shit, and now you reminded me.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
You can't distinguish the genders of the penguins there!

Huge step up from the first episode that largely felt boring. Anime still feels as if its some adaptation of some otome to me, or at least thats the impression it gives off, not that that is bad. The environments seem well and really pretty or detailed and realistic at times, certainly memorable, and the whole feeling of suspense and growing intensity the episode really paid off in making this a lasting experience. Will definitely follow and hope its picked up in the western world, definitely would buy on disc.

Miyuki easily the star character and going through it all, love his personality. Wayami too
Though cant shake the feeling that there is definitely more to him. Will he be a protagonists aligned with good? And what are the shadows after Izumiko? Hopefully Miyuki can fend them off and protect her as she still tries to awaken.

Dokidoki Precure! 08

- Starting off strong with Mana and MakoP idol culture. I get the feeling this one is unsinkable already.

- That trailer in the opening must be for New Stage 2, but all I saw was dokis. Looks like they're going even further into the Super Sentai style crossovers than last time.

- (Commercials) The Wii dancing game will soon be mine. Soon.

- Screw knocking! Mana busts into houses of men she doesn't know the name of, and she does so proudly.

- IT'S HERE. I was trying to forget. We didn't even make it to the title card before the end appeared... Oh no, it's crying and they're feeding it... the flashbacks...

- And now the classy villains in their classy hideout. I can't take this tonal (and quality) whiplash much longer.

- (Commercials) They should totally have these bubble swords and bubble guns in the real series. I guess that's what you get when the Cures don't have their phallic wands or powerup accessories to sell you yet.

- If I ever found myself holding a famous young idol's hand and assuring her "young girls are all princesses", it's all over.

- Hey. Stop breaking my perfect Mana, baby-monster. I'm sure she'd be a lovely singer if you weren't warping the plot for "comedy". I said stop it. Mana is wearing a ribbon. Those give status resistance.

Verdict: Whew. Not ruined... Yet. That baby-monster is certainly trying its damnedest, though. Mana and dokis are just too strong, for now. The next episode preview fills me with dread again.

EDIT - images get. Also came across this one - Dokidoki is the new Sailor Moon project confirmed.

Darker than Black 6

Hei is slowly but surely being developed more and is thankfully showing up more often. The relation between the syndicates, organizations, etc. are starting to come together and I can only assume the major antagonists have been introduced. What we really need though is more Yin, as she's adorable.
