It just reminds me of the purple bricks in Shingeki. I mean the Stand's name has green in it, so you would sorta expect it to be green. Then it just turns to purple. It's sorta jarring.

Well Green obviously the canon/real time color, the color change is the palette swap/edit like we seeing in previous season.

What does bother me is that some people hate "light novel garbage" so much that they feel that it's entirely justified to spoil stuff without tags or anything. But even then, it's not really a big deal, the spoilers don't tend to be very heavy.

I'm going to respond to Hito's lengthy post in due course, but this point from Gbraga can be addressed much more quickly! People really need to remember to spoiler-tag their posts because I've seen people slip up on numerous occasions and reveal pretty big plot details. Even if you don't care about or don't care for a particular show please have the decency to keep spoilers tagged appropriately.

Image spoilers are also pretty common and I feel people should just use common sense and not post stuff that's obviously spoilerfic like a character dying or an important scene.

You know it's ridiculous how much better the Crunchyroll player in my ps4 is better than the one in their website. Outside of the crashing and having to close the app, the video never stutters or stutters not as many times.

I guess its the shaky lines ( most likely deliberate), the lack of detail and difference in character and background art that made me think that.

I really like that kind of style, for some reason it just feels right with series that are supposed to be more grounded and realistic. It would suck to watch JoJo or an Imaishi show that looks like this, but for Ping Pong I think it looks great.

I'd be SUPER ok with a Fuan no Tane anime with that look.

To be honest, I don't think the standard here is particularly high! :)

It's still much higher than in most other places.

Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do tonight, so let's go.

No Game No Life - 01

Yeah, this is shit, but it could be the good kind, so I'll give it some more time. It looks kind of good, it definitely has a unique color palette, and the game aspect could turn into something addictive, but we'll see. The falling sequence even had some nice animation. The incest stuff I'm still not sure about, it could be that we're a little bit too sensitive/careful about it given the history of the medium (recent years especially) since it wasn't really THAT bad here, but it could definitely cross the line and turn into something awful. We'll see.

It's not a simple or clear-cut issue, though, sometimes. For example, it's almost impossible to sell people on PGSM without divulging what makes it so interesting and thus spoiling the show. Simple trust only goes so far, and you have to provide a little to inform people on what they're going to get. There comes a point when the people who are into watching things blind would have done so already.

Are those all fan dubs or something? Or lines taken from other anime and inserted into the show?
Those are entirely authentic clips of a commercial English dub for the DBZ movies. They were produced for the UK market by AB Group and are referred to as the "big green" dub, because Piccolo was renamed Big Green in them.

I'm usually not a fan of dubs, but the brazilian version of Pegasus Fantasy is kinda amazing.

You know it's ridiculous how much better the Crunchyroll player in my ps4 is better than the one in their website. Outside of the crashing and having to close the app, the video never stutters or stutters not as many times.

The interface is pretty awful (assuming it's the same as it is on PS3 and Vita), but it is quite smooth. It's a shame though that I'm not able to access the US library through it, so I mostly just stick to PC.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
First, you build up a credibility base, and then you recommend PGSM!

Or you swindle them into some kind of watch bet.

No it's pretty clear-cut. Spoiler tag and mark story spoilers accordingly. People can decide for themselves if they care enough to read it. If you think that this gets in the way of the evangelization of something you want other people to watch, well then, too bad. :p

The design work in Ping Pong plays directly into the animation style, like in all Yuasa works. It's not about how the a single frame of the show looks, but about how it moves. Although I'd still argue that the stills look great.

Ugh. I don't like rotoscoping or that kind of art style.

I can certainly understand why some would like it. Some anime watchers like unique art styles and even some abstract art styles. Hell some people like styles where there's drawn art over IRL shots. It's just a taste people have for certain animation. I think some people here calling each other's taste s**t for liking it or vise versa is unneeded. Some art styles won't appeal to others. Some people here just need to understand that and get over their own egos enough to see that not everyone will like what they like. And that doesn't make the other persons taste crap.

Hey, I'm entirely clear on the pros and cons of PGSM. It's a fun and interesting show, but the production is pretty awful. lol

The English dub of DBZ is superior in every way. It's not even debatable. So there are exceptions to the rule.

No way. The music in the original version is much better, as are most of the voices.

I like the English dub of DBZ in general, but the inferior music hurts it a lot. A lot of the earlier dubbed episodes also have some questionable voice work (improved upon later, and especially in the uncut versions later made) and bizarre script decisions.

I can't think of Sailor Moon without thinking about that dude in youtube who is so obsessed with it he dresses up as the characters and has transformation sequences.

Nightmares.

At what point does anime spiral down enough so that twincest isn't enough anymore and it's all about waifuing of gender-bent versions of yourself.

Your avatar is a spoiler. The entire joke of Saya protecting people spoils that she ends up protecting nobody.

I'm kind of curious to hear you elaborate on what you personally believe the pros and cons are as PGSM is actually my favourite version.

I feel like you can make people interested without actually spoiling things. I know a lot of people became interested in Samurai Flamenco just from reading reactions to episode 7. You don't have to go out of your way and say
there's a fucking guillotine gorilla
to get people interested, but if you spoil tag it or post it as a link in case it's an image, some people that are intrigued by the reactions and don't care about Samumenco at all might click it and change their minds.

It's true that some people are really oversensitive to this kind of stuff, but it doesn't hurt to add a spoiler tag if someone complains.

Big Green dub from the UK I believe.

LOL! Yeah that's pretty bad. Why didn't they just stick with the cast in the NA release?

I just can't

NO ONE'S GONNA TAKE ME ALIVE
THE TIME HAS COME TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT
I dunno about this. The CGI isn't Arpeggio awful, but it is distracting. The launch sequence was pretty cool, but I feel like I should just be reading the manga.
I do like the OP and ED though

Honestly, I've always seen the whole "what you like is shit" as a joke. At least I always laugh. I liked No Game No Life, but I was laughing out loud when I read this:

Btw, what kind of art style do you think would fit Fuan no Tane? I love that manga so much, and it would be awesome to get an anime.

Lol, spoilers bro! Fix that tag!

Irony that he messed up that spoiler?

FUCK, I'M REALLY, REALLY SORRY

This statement seems agreeable on its face but ultimately shuts down discussion here. Rotoscoping is a technique, not a style, and it can actually be done in different ways. Furthermore, art style isn't quite the same as animation style, as conveying still images isn't the same as conveying motion.

This is a reasonable and accommodating position, but I have personal experience with people abusing this line of thought to enable the worst kind of behavior. Common sense isn't as understood as it used to be on this subject.

I understand your point, which is that context is key, but I think having an easy approach at least allows for some consistency. Your earlier point about engagement matters because if you get the right kind of discourse and get to know each other than you gain a level of trust with others and then you can talk to them more frankly in IRC or PM's or Steam of wherever.

I'll also agree that sometimes people go too far and tilt dangerously close to firehawk's "spoiler culture" but I hope that, through reason and decency, we can arrive at a reasonable understanding of how to communicate our impressions and ideas. I don't expect immediate consensus.

And really, that's all I ask for in these discussions. I've never been for everything being a free-for-all, but we should come to a realization that not all spoilers are made equal. Just like how you need to know the context for the Blood-C joke to be a spoiler, you might also need context to understand that an episode screenshot is a spoiler. In such cases, you only realize things in hindsight and no damage was ever done.

By no means do I want to shut down discussion on the topic. I just think we can do better at expressing why we like or dislike certain art styles or animation styles without delving into "your taste is s**t" territory. I know some do it out of jest but some here are very serious when they express that.

I'll agree rotoscoping is great for general motion but like with The Flowers of Evil, it's either a hit or a miss and I feel most of the time it was a miss. That might of had more to do with the general character designs. It still kind of makes it a jarring experience because while the motion might be grounded and realistic, the art most of the time leaves much to be desired. In my opinion of course.

Way to prove my point for me. That music is perfect for the scene. It's definitely far better than Faulconer's mediocre score for the dub which only had one or two memorable tunes.

I was referring to the actual voice work. I can deal with some bad music if the VO's do a good job. Vise versa though...... Cantdealwithit.gif

That's a better way of putting it, and a fairer point to make.

The problem I have with this mentality is that it suggests we should accept everything as equal and a matter of taste, and not go any further with discourse. For example, you spent a single sentence asserting that you dislike something, and then you went on to spend an entire paragraph talking about the mentality behind people liking or disliking something. Wouldn't it have been more on point or worthwhile instead to debate and discuss the merits and demerits of a given art form instead?

For example, in the Ping Pong screen being used as an example, I can talk about why it looks good, what merits it has, the intent behind the style, and why I like it. There's very strong color contrast in the shot, which separates the individual visual elements really well, this along with the wide perspective angle creates a very real sense of space. While each individual element is not particularly detailed, the emphasis is on the form of each element, and taken as a whole the scene itself is varied and detailed.

Having more "detailed" individual elements would distract from the look intended - which is to create such a scene with as little visual noise as possible. Things which actually matter to creating the flow of the animation or the layout of the scene is actually pretty detailed - there are folds in the clothing when there is a need to show posture, the characters have individual hairstyles to tell them apart, there is weathering in the props, everything is cohesive and creates the atmosphere desired for the scene.

I think that discussing stuff like this is much more interesting than arguing over tastes. Sure, someone might have a personal preference for a certain type of style, but artistic merit is weighed by whether there is depth and meaning with regards to the effort and thought put into making something.

Yea, I still wish this was 2D. The background art is really nice in how detailed it is, depicting the worn out status of everything. That said, the show looks awful in motion. Just everything looks unnatural as a result of using CGI for everything. I almost feel I would be better serviced just reading the manga.

Should mention that I do like the sound effects a lot.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. Background art is definitely amazing but from what I've seen of the manga it's nothing compared to the art in that
