With Halo being so popular, why aren't arena shooters?

"How many people play Tribes: Ascend and Nexuiz?"

Quite a decent number of people play Tribes: Ascend. Nexuiz is not worth talking about because of several factors, but yes, it's super dead.

"Tribes is doing fine, and perception of it isn't exactly positive."

A majority of the poor perception of T:A is by TW manchildren that don't have a positive perception of anything that isn't their preferred Tribes game, which means quite a few of them vehemently hate T1 or T2 as well.

I'll take your word for it. I don't like Tribes and I didn't particularly like THIS Tribes, so I wouldn't consider my criticism particularly relevant.

I don't think taking too much skill/accessibility is a real problem, as long as the feature set of the game allows anyone to play other players of similar skill. I don't play LOL or dota or any of these games, but they don't strike me as games made for the lowest common denominator, yet they are extremely popular. F2P obviously helps, and you don't need any special hardware. I was really impressed the first time I started up DOTA2, you can spectate live high-level matches right from the main menu. It just puts everything in one place and really makes learning and enjoying the game an accessible process, before you even play it.
