Kong is guaranteed 100M+ in China at this point. Perhaps it hits 150M (or close) the same way xXx and RE did. That would put it in Godzilla (2014) territory with Japan and the rest of its run still to go.

Interested to see who takes round 1.

Star Wars?

Star Wars was not sold out on the 2nd weekend around here

Do you live in the US? Then yes it was. Star Wars sold out across the country its second weekend. It did nearly 150 million its second weekend.

Hell, it's second weekend was close to BATB's first weekend. BATB is a big big big hit but it isn't anywhere close to being in the ballpark of what The Force Awakens did. The only film in the past 15 years that you can compare in terms of boxoffice mania to TFA is Avatar. BATB is a few tiers below that.

Based on your avatar I am assuming you are in the US. BATB second weekend domestically is estimated at 81 million. The Force Awakens second weekend domestically was 149 million. Nearly DOUBLE.

BATB is doing great but trying to compare it to what TFA did...is just nonsense. I can't believe people are are forgetting/playing down the insane domestic run of TFA. Prime time showings of the film were sold out across the entire country for weeks on end. We haven't seen anything like that since Avatar and we are unlikely to see anything like that anytime soon. BATB is doing fantastic, but it's absurd to try and claim in the US it is more of a success its second weekend than TFA is when it is going end up doing roughly half of what TFA did its second weekend.

Dallas Texas bud, and no it wasn't. We had to sell our opening night tickets because my dog got seriously sick, we ended up going the 2nd week as walkins with no issue what so ever.

I did not make the Star Wars comparison, someone else did, I just said that I didn't see the same sellout 2nd weekend at this theater. Obviously Star Wars is way more huge.

TFA is doing roughly double what BATB did it's second weekend. It is a safe bet to say it was selling out in a major metropolitan area like Dallas. It's pretty difficult to do 150 million in a weekend without prime time weekend sell outs in major cities like that. There was without question sell-outs in Dallas for TFA that weekend. Hell a lot of the country had prime time sellouts for TFA for nearly a month straight.

You can't say with a straight face the IMAX screenings in a major city like Dallas didn't sell out it's second weekend for TFA man. Those were completely sold out even in small towns for a long time.

Hey guys I heard we were talking about how shit Force Awakens was

Rogue One was the better film!

Might as well wait for the real numbers instead of Deadline's guestimates at this point

I'm not surprised by Life bombing.

Some of the worst previews and trailers I've ever seen. Did a terrible job of selling or making the movie seem interesting.

Elsewhere, Lionsgate's Power Rangers is leading the weekend's new releases raking in nearly $15 million on Friday, heading toward a three-day opening in the low $40 millions. The film scored an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, of which 30% were under the age of 18 and scored the film an "A+".

Kids loving the Power Rangers.

This is the first time where I feel like I've been totally out of the loop of such a huge film's hype up leading to its release. 170 million for Beauty and the Beast seems totally unexpected to me. Lion King and Aladdin are going to make a killing.

Beauty and the Beast is at $541M worldwide. It should be easily over $650M by Sunday.

Kong is at $316M. I'd guess that it will be somewhere over $375M by Sunday.

Edit: 2-day total for Kong in China is $47M without service fees. Its Chinese opening will likely be higher than the domestic opening.

If Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't end with the Pacific Rim universe getting involved....
Seeing Godzilla tag team with a jaeger to do this would be a glorious moment in cinematic history.

I'm surprised they haven't said Rim is part of the Monsterverse yet

They're way too different. Pacific Rim isn't afraid of throwing realism out the window (or afraid of fun) while the MonsterVerse is trying to stay somewhat serious and "grounded in reality". Would be better if PR wasn't tied down with that stuff.

It looks like the first 10 days of Beauty and the Beast's run will pass the entire domestic total of the original Disney cartoon adjusted for inflation. Not counting later re-releases.

Huh? Have you seen Kong?

Kong 3rd weekend should top Godzilla 3rd weekend despite a much smaller opening. It has already started matching or exceeding Godzilla daily totals.
