We need post like this for every new MCU character. Because they are good crow eating post
It isn't necessarily an indictment though. Iron Man, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy...were all so esoteric to the mainstream public at one time. The fact that Marvel has leveraged their lesser known properties and turned in them into bankable successes is to be commended.

damn....didnt realise The Good Dinosaur flopped, $330m gross on a $200m budget. Really weird after the success of Inside Out

There is 0 chance that Civil War beats Apocalyspe in its 3rd weekend, right?

Or did you mean something else?

I'm very curious to see if CW superhero review comparisons work in the other direction. Apocalypse looks as hacky and tired as BvS. I'd love to see CW's perfection destroy all other attempts at superhero universes. A few years from now we get the X-Men the way they were meant to be. The next Avengers movie after infinity war is AvX. We all win.

They'd been working on that movie for a while and had problems with it. There's a reason last year was the first time ever that Pixar had released 2 movies in the same year. At that point, I think they were just trying to salvage the project and make whatever money they could.

Not unless Rupert Murdock goes bankrupt or something. I really don't think people understand how desperate Sony was to agree to that deal with Marvel.

What?

Not getting AvX is one of the best things to come out of Marvel not owning X-Men rights.

He's pretty old, right?
He has kids.

Anyway, Simon Kinberg (producer on the X-Men films) has recently said that he'd like crossovers to happen with characters such as Deadpool and Spidey, and by extension, the rest of the MCU. Maybe when Thanos snaps his fingers in Infinity Wars the (comic accurate) X-Men suddenly exist in the MCU, eh?

But why? The poster is 100% right. Heck most people didn't know anything about Iron Man before his movie and he is popular for comic book fans.

Just because a characters becomes popular from a movie doesn't mean they WERE popular.

Lol ok

Because Civil War was a good event comic lofl

Civil War was trash too. But AvX was a special breed of bad. Usually I can turn off my brain and force myself through Marvel events (Hickman's Secret Wars being a recent exception, which I largely enjoyed), but I actually never finished AvX. And afterwards, I stopped reading most X-Books.

I absolutely hated that event. Then again, maybe I'm an outlier. The last X event I liked was probably House of M.

There's no way they could establish what would need to be established to follow that actual story. It would just be the name and the general conceit of them at odds.

Almost like...what...they did...with....

Civil War

What I remember from that event was very little build up and an entire fight broke out because two idiots decided not to talk to each other for longer then a minute due to shitty plot convenience.

I suppose I don't really have an issue with it if the only similarity is the name. Even less similarities then Civil War, which still has traces of the comic run.

just realized ratchet and clank is coming out.....where is the marketing for this thing?

hope it doesn't bomb

I keep forgetting its a movie and not just a game. Bundling the marketing together was a mistake. When every TV spot ends with this it is going to cause some confusion.

There is literally nothing appealing about the movie. The jokes are wack, the animation looks like it's out of the video game (which is great for a game and shite for a film). It looks like Veggie Tales without the Christ.

Neighbors 2 in Civil Wars 3rd week is actually pretty strong competition. The first one opened at almost 50 million and grossed 150 million domestic. With the other big hitters hitting the weekend after that you have to wonder what Civil Wars legs are going to look like

yeah civil war has some crazy competition it's going to have to deal with

but if word of mouth is as strong as I expect it to be I'm not sure how much it will all matter in the end

That ain't happening. We got Inhumans, we good. Avengers vs. Inhumans. Lol

Ratchet and Clank is going to bomb.

Also, $40M Saturday for Jungle Book pretty much guarantees a $100M debut, or just shy of one at worst. $44M would be closer to a $110M opening.

The tiny Thursday share of that number also bodes well for a good hold next weekend. I'm fully expecting Jungle Book wkd 2 to be over BvS wkd 2.

And the hits just keep on coming.

Working at a regular book store (not comic shop), that most people flock to the big event books like AvX or Civil War. And no matter how much I try and sway them to better stuff, people still get the big event books no matter how bad they are.
Yet, I still can't convince anyone to get Secret Wars, which was all kinds of badass. Shit, I have had a hard time convincing people to buy the Priest run on Black Panther over the Hedlund one. They just know the Hedlund name and go to it.

Sigh

I feel bad for Ratchet and Clank, because I reviewed the game and I had a good bit of fun with it. Enjoyed the cutscenes too.

How is the new game? I haven't played a Ratchet game since the 3rd one on PS2 (I never got a PS3).

Do we know the budget of Ratchet and Clank? Wonder if it's actually going to be one of the biggest bombs of the year.

Budget wasn't huge (wanna say 40 million) and if the marketing we've seen is any indication, not a lot of extra cost after production. Honestly, it's not gonna outright bomb, but it's not going to prove video game adaptations are any more bankable then they've ever been

I dunno about Apocalypse. It is coming off the most successful X-Men team film (I had to add the team modifier because of Deadpool), and was one of the most well received entries in the series and comic films of the last several years.
Add in the addition of a recognizable bad guy for most people (even if Apocalypse sucks), and the same creative team as DoFP, and it has just about everything going for it.

I think it will set the opening weekend record for an X-Team film at least. After that, it is all about how well the film turns out. I think the opening weekend will be big because of the goodwill that DoFP gave them.
Shit, I am ready for Singer to do whatever he wants after finally giving me a worthy sequel to X2 after more than a decade.

I think the opening weekend will be less than DOFP no matter how good it is because 1. It's opening the same day as the Alice sequel when the original made a billion and 2. Same month as Civil War when that will be huge.

It's got an uphill fight against it. The week after that is the TMNT sequel which won't be good for legs either. They picked a poor time to release it even if it is Memorial Day weekend.

I don't see Alice making too big a dent with this one. Of course, Civil War might actually hurt X-Men more than we think in the end. It is coming only a few weeks prior, and even if most of the gas will be out of the tank by then, since it seems to be well received already could dampen enthusiasm for X-Men.
DoFP was coming a few weeks after the disappointing ASM2 in 2014, so that might have helped it. Who knows.

But Alice just seems like something that will kinda come and go like a mild fart. It will make its presence known, then quickly dissipate into the air.

Hope R&C does decent, the game is pretty fun and it's really gorgeous. Still don't know what to make of the trailers but I can see why it might no draw too many in.

Updates from Boxoffice.com's long range projections

The Huntsman was bumped down to $28M opening/$68M total. We'll get their final prediction on Wednesday, but WOM seems pretty weak.

Their prediction for Civil War was bumped up to $182M opening/$490M total.

Warcraft, The Conjuring 2, and Now You See Me 2 were added for the first time.

Box office is giving Warcraft an initial $35M OW/$78M total prediction. NYSM2 got $23M opening/$65M total (the first film opened to $29M, and made close to $120M). The Conjuring got $45M opening and $105M total.
