Shit. Kswiss making graphs about BO GAF now. We gone full circle.

I am just continually surprised every time we hit 1k posts for the week this year. Before this year we had maybe 10 threads total over that 1k mark (most of them related to the Avengers, TFA, and BvS) and xaosslug has been doing this for close to 10 years.

For whatever reason, more people decided to follow along this year.

Console wars got boring and blockbusters got more nerdy.

Forum activity in general continues to go up as memberhip increases year over year.

Factoid: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion thread was the first to hit 10,000 posts. We blow past that with great regularity now.

Wants to outlaw technological innovation.
Box office also makes for entertaining talk. TV talk is dead in a public setting due to spoilers, but movies are still okay since almost nothing is surprising anyway and most people who care see it Day one lol.

Any word on how Dunkirk is doing? 50 mil opening weekend seems pretty good for a non American war movie.

Also, what's the budget for the movie? I read the production note and even there it's not mentioned.

It's doing decent for what it is.

The budget is up in the air. There's some word that it's far lower than past Nolan movies, others are saying $150M, some are saying $100M.

No matter what the budget is I don't think it particularly matters. Worst case scenario Warner takes a loss and gets leverage on Nolan and has a say on his next project.

I would also say they can probably make an Oscar push with it, it hits most of checkboxes for Best Picture.

I guess this is a good point. We've also had a pretty interesting set of films this year, between the huge successes and the multiple big budget failures. I am sure that helps too.

Yeah, you can probably point to every one of those spikes and call out a major release, or major box office story. There's a general lift to the year over year trends, but this year has been VERY swing-y compared to prior years.

It's going to make $500M+ and be in contention for a bunch of Oscars. If anything, I think Nolan gets more leverage.

The international territories where Dunkirk is most relevant are the mature ones where studios actually make good ancillary cash. The UK, Australia, Germany, France, etc. It would be cool to see a $75M+ gross in China to boost the ww gross, but in the long run the difference between that and $30M in China isn't really a big deal.

Every dollar of UK box office ends up being worth more than $4 of Chinese box office over the lifespan of the film.

It's at $113 million currently with basically 50/50 ish split domestic vs international.

Budget is now reported as $100 million (boxoffice mojo has adjusted their initial $150 M to $100 M). In U.K. in articles the budget was always noted as being approx $100 million and certainly interviews with various people involved have noted it was much less expensive than you'd think due to careful use of physical effects and lack of actors getting a huge salary (interestingly the person getting the big bucks on this one is apparently Nolan himself).

Reviews are glowing and WoM is strong.

As a WW2 based non character non traditional narrative driven film it's doing excellently thus far. Unless it doesn't perform remotely as you'd expect from this point forward it's almost certainly going to be deemed another critical and commercial result for Nolan.

I hadn't checked in on Baby Driver's performance over the past week, but it's doing well enough that it will top $100m in the US alone - already at $120m globally. Pretty remarkable run.

James 'Fox will wait more than a decade for me to make the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time' Cameron.

Not counting a couple recent Disney cartoons and Titanic (for obvious reasons), Inception is now the only film to make over $800M worldwide and not have some sort of sequel announced or released.

How long until Box Office GAF gets spun out into its own forum. Feel like between us and PoliGAF we make up 60-80% of OT threads

Honestly, part of that is because most of the shows haven't started for this season. Game of Thrones is in full swing now, and more are coming soon. On the flip, there's always movies to discuss.

On a whole, I think our biggest community threads are the various Sports, PoliGAF, and maybe Toonami.

Man, I don't even want to know how big the Comics community would be if it wasn't rebooted every month.

And I hope he never does a sequel. My respect for him would go down a notch.
That movie and the ambiguity of the ending was fucking perfect.

PoliGAF is still the king. As an example, the latest thread has 1,723 posts since its reboot yesterday.

Outside of Toonami, PoliGAF, and sports, the bigger ongoing community threads with reboots include COMICS! and the Black Culture Thread.

If you want a monster of an ongoing OT thread, the Dragon Ball Super thread is it.

Keeping in mind that this week (week 30) is only on Tuesday, here's an updated graph of Box Office GAF posts in the weekend box office threads through the first 30 weeks of the past 4 years.

2017 made up for the TFA and BvS bumps of 2016 a few weeks back and is now the chattiest year to date, probably passing 23k posts for the year by the end of today. Last year was at around 21k posts by this point. 2015 was at just over 9k. 2014 was at 4.8k (I was mainly talking to myself back then).

This is the Wonder Woman bump.

Boxoffice GAF is limited in ways those threads aren't. We only get numbers once a day, most people only care about the weekend takes, and there's only so many times that you can make fun of Bronson in a given week. When we exhaust those, we are left to rank MCU films, fight over Man of Steel or BvS, or complain about being old.

About to watch Girls Trip and there's about 30 other people here. I am the only guy.

Enjoy it.

This reminds me of that one Saturday in November 2012 when I watched the Twilight quintet. Got to the theater at 8am and watched all five of these movies back to back. If I remember correctly I saw one other dude in that 780 seat theater. Fuck me that was an interesting experience.

Being the only dude in a theater of women is fantastic.

When I still worked at a theater I used my free ticket of the day to check out Divergent.

I was more entertained by the chatter more than anything else.

I am eagerly anticipating their next steps honestly

Also speaking of questionable movies, King Arthur is out on digital today!

It's kind of bananas to think about the fact that movies now hit home in under 3 months. I remember when it was such a long slog...
