‘Ant-Man’ Tops Charts, ‘Pixels’ Opens to Lackluster $24 Million

Adam Sandler’s star appears to have dimmed significantly, after “Pixels,” a slice of arcade game nostalgia that recruited the likes of Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to appear alongside the funnyman, opened to a disappointing $24 million at the domestic box office.

The critically derided comedy finished up just behind Disney and Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” which picked up first place and $24.8 million in its second weekend. That marks the weakest chart-topping performance since April 24 when “Furious 7,” then in its fourth week of release, bested all challengers with $17.8 million. So far, “Ant-Man” has earned $106.1 million stateside.

The weekend box office race unfolded in the shadow of a shocking act of violence after a gunman opened fire during a Thursday night screening of “Trainwreck” in Louisiana, killing two women and injuring nine people before turning the weapon on himself. Safety concerns across the country may have caused some consumers to steer clear of cinemas.

Among the weekend’s other new releases, Fox’s “Paper Towns” picked up $12.5 million from 3,031 locations, while The Weinstein Company’s “Southpaw” snagged $16.5 million from 2,772 theaters. “Paper Towns” missed analysts’ projections. Most estimates had the latest tween romance from “Fault in Our Stars” author John Green debuting to north of $20 million. With a production budget of $12 million, it still stands to be profitable, but the results seemed to puzzle the studio, which thought it had a hit on its hands.

“I’m really somewhat mystified,” said Chris Aronson, domestic distribution chief at Fox. “It’s something we’re going to have to look at and review on a post-mortem basis and find out why we didn’t get more people in.”

“Southpaw,” an uplifting boxing drama with Jake Gyllenhaal, did better than expected, potentially setting the $25 million drama up for a healthy run with those moviegoers who have grown weary of dinosaurs and costumed heroes. The picture attracted a diverse crowd that was 24% Latino, 21% African-American, and 60% under the age of 35. The film’s star was front and center, doing interviews on everything from Fresh Air to Sports Center, while recounting the physical transformation he underwent to believably play a fighter.

“Jake was everywhere and people responded to him,” said Erik Lomis, the Weinstein Company’s distribution chief.

He predicted a long run, noting, “It appeals to the people on a mass level and it’s a very satisfying film.”

In the case of “Pixels,” the Sony release cost $88 million to produce, a figure that is moderate by summer blockbuster standards, and the studio touted its overseas performance. The picture has made more than $25 million to date, Sony said. In the U.S., the opening weekend crowd was comprised was 62% under the age of 25 and 55% male.

It ranks as another disappointment for Sandler. Four years ago, he was perhaps the most consistent comedian in terms of box office performance, fielding hits like “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” “Grown Ups,” and “Just Go With It.” More recently, he has struggled mightily — headlining flops and duds like “Blended” and “That’s My Boy.” Only a sequel to “Grown Ups” and “Hotel Transylvania,” an animated film that only featured his voice, have worked. He will now look to salvation in the form of a multi-picture deal with Netflix.

“Adam Sandler’s audience is really no longer there theatrically like it once was,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “They’re not following him any more…it’s not that Netflix is purgatory, but he probably wouldn’t have made that deal if his films were still doing $100 million or more at the box office.”

Holdovers, “Minions” and “Trainwreck,” picked up $22.1 million and $17.3 million, pushing their totals to $261.6 million and $61.5 million, respectively. In milestone news, “Jurassic World” has now blown past “Marvel’s The Avengers” on the domestic all-time list, becoming the third biggest film in history, when not adjusted for inflation, with $623.8 million. It earned $6.9 million.

Pixels better hope for some good numbers overseas.

Looks like Ant-Man is holding well. Might be hope for a sequel.

How come Box Office numbers always come out Sunday morning? Shouldn't they come out on Monday after the Sunday night numbers are in? Is it just a tradition thing or something else? Is it normal to have four consecutive sentences end in question marks?

Hope Marvel likes the numbers and gives us more Antman, Luis
and Wasp
.

Box office had to been effected by shootings in some way.

And Pixels is doing a bit better overseas but dunno if that matters to Sony.

Next week, INCOMING CRUISE MISSILE.

I'll be honest here and say that I was totally expecting Pixels to break Jurrasic World's record and become the highest grossing movie of the year. Thankfully, it's only going to be marginally successful instead of a cinema destroying juggernaut that I was fearing was going to cast us into a 1000 years of darkness, robbing the entire medium of any and all artistic merit and just turning it into an endless parade of dick jokes, racism, sexism and cheap nostalgia cash-ins.

Very normal ;)

The numbers we get today are estimates. The actuals are provided on Monday and are usually very close to the estimates.

Pixels has gotta hurt. They were surely aiming for more than Sandler's core audience and they didn't even get that, really.

Chris Columbus isn't exactly an auteur but the dude can usually smell money. You don't bring him on just to helm a Sandler-and-friends vacation.

There is enough data nowadays to pretty well predict sunday based off of friday and saturday. Actual figures come in tomorrow and are just slightly different.

That audience was mostly retro gamers in their late 20's or early 30's. The kind of audience that reads online reviews before going to the theater.

Aurora was way worse and didn't affect box office that much

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Pixels is Sandlers last film before his Netflix stuff right? At least we won't have to see him on big screen for a while.

It looks Disney and Universal have all the 2015 box office revenue all to themselves for now at least.

Glad to see Inside Out doing well and continuing to have legs I mean seriously how many weeks has it been out?

$700-800 million is pretty doable for this film considering it still has many markets to open in.

With The Good Dinosaur coming out later this year it looks like Pixar has another surefire original hit on it's hands.

Can 2 films from the same studio released in the same year be nominated for Best Animated Feature?

Either way that race is already over.

I thought about seeing Pixels, glad I decided to see Trainwreck instead.

Does it make me a bad person to say I might still pay money to see this movie?

Someone is going to paid thousands of dollars to tell him the obvious statement of the material not being nearly as popular as The Fault in Our Stars, despite being from the same author. It's the same reason why some Nicholas Sparks adaptations do really well and why some don't.

Just be glad they didn't promoted Pixels as full on Adam Sandler's movie because I'm pretty sure it'll do Grown Ups 2 number otherwise.

Anyone up for a Fantastic Four pool? Just a friendly guessing game

I think that movie is not going to bomb but just underperform.

I'm sure the rabid Marvel fanboys would love to see this movie fail.

I'm cautiously optimistic about it but I'm not expecting anything good.

And considering the horrendous marketing surrounding this movie.

20th Century Fox appears to have little faith in it, fingers crossed my fellow film fans.

I only read the wiki summary, just didn't sound too good. Just seemed like every other hipster finding themselves indie movie that been done a thousand times before

A failed franchise full of unknown/lesser known actors? Every indication is Fantastic Four has a lot to overcome. I thought the last trailer looked better than I expected, but I still don't have much interest in seeing it.

The only marketing deal seems to be with Denny's

Early word on Fantastic Four was surprisingly good the film has some huge building sized-posters in my city. Seems like they're pushing it hard.

I know fanboys want Fantastic Four to bomb in the hopes that Fox makes a deal with Marvel similar to the deal Sony made with Marvel over Spider-Man.

Ant-Man had a drop that is inline with most MCU films. Pixels basically handed it the top spot if actuals keep them in place. Estimates kept on dropping like crazy.

Unfortunally for Pixels their target audience is pretty much the same dudes that read reviews, rants and previews.

This is why I kind of picked it out to have a "disappointing" return. The audience that's interested in retro game nostalgia probably doesn't overlap much with people who are in to Adam Sandler movies (or even tolerate them). The only shot it had to overcome that was to be an amazing movie but I'm sure we all could predict that wasn't going to happen.
