Wkd BO 10•16-18•15 - 'Crimson Peak' sounds like a euphemism for menstruation... _

Early numbers are pointing to bombs a plenty this weekend.

Deadline and Boxoffice.com are both forecasting The Martian re-taking #1 and Goosebumps holding onto #2.

Both sites are forecasting $10-12M for Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension, $9M or Steve Jobs, about $10M for the Last Witch Hunter, and between $2-4M for Gem and the Holograms and Rock the Kasbah.

At least most of those films were fairly cheap to produce.

I never expected Steve Jobs to have such a poor start. Given the good reviews and all.

5 wide releases in a random October weekend doesn't seem like the best recipe for success.

So The Martian will end up passing my $160M winter game prediction this weekend. Congrats to those who went with something in the $200M range.

I want to see Crimson Peak this week, but I really don't like horror movies. How scary is it? Is it violent? Is it bloody? Is it gruesome or disgusting in its violence or imagery (like, guts spilling or gross stuff)? Does it have a lot of jump scares? Or is it more unnerving and tense?

Just got out of seeing it. It's not really a horror movie at all. Very atmospheric and can get pretty tense but I wouldn't say it was scary. It does have a few shocking pecies of violence. They are not super bloody but just out of no where shocking. Think like the bottle scene from Pans Labyrinth.

I checked the booking screen at the Arclight last night. Out of 91 seats, 3 had sold for a 9:30 showing of Jem and the Holograms.

Fullest theater in the house was Steve Jobs with just under 40.

There were 30 people in for Last Witch Hunter.

This one's going to VOD in two weeks, right? So theaters really didn't care about pushing it. Not sure how/where the marketing focus has been.
No, it only goes to VOD two weeks after the theater count drops to 300 theaters. So over a month, at minimum.

Still, several of the major theater chains refused to book the film as a result, and that definitely hurt it. What'll really be interesting to see is the Canadian box office, since Paramount managed to get all the major chains on board there.

Friday Studio Estimates:

1) The Martian - $4.4M - $155M total
2) Goosebumps - $4.0M - $32M total
3) The Last Witch Hunter - $3.8M
4) Bridge of Spies - $3.3M - $25M total
5) Paranormal Activity - The Ghost Dimension - $3.3M
6) Steve Jobs - $2.4M - $5M total
7) Hotel Transylvania 2 - $2.2M - $142M
8) Crimson Peak - $1.8M - $19M total
9) The Intern - $1.1M - $62M total
10) Woodlawn - $850k - $6M total

13) Rock the Kasbah - $530k
14) Gem and the Holograms - $460k

Most of the openers won't even hit the shitty numbers based on early Friday data that I posted last night.

The Sequel will pick things up

Scheduled to release around the same time that the Ryan Reynolds led Green Lantern 2 debuts.

Can Vin Diesel carry a movie anymore? He's been losing steam over these years.

Any future movies besides F&F for him?

The Last With Hunter bomba... Lions Gate am cry - desperate to find that Hunger Games replacement monies,

Paranormal Activity, eh... Paramount may be right, VOD is where the title will most likely thrive.

When has Vin Deisel ever been able to carry a movie outside of the F&F stuff?

XXX and the Pacifier are the only two films that had solid runs and can be attributed to the brief popularity he had 10-15 years ago.

Apparently, Lions Gate made enough selling the international rights for The Last Witch Hunter that they are only on the Hook for about $10M domestically, despite the film's $70-80M budget.

Been ages, if ever, since Vin Diesel has managed to carry anything outside of F&F. He seems to be a nice enough guy, but he's a shitty actor that works shitty films.

He has such a HUUUUGE following though. But I guess his fans don't care about his movies enough to move their asses to their local theater.

That's their motto - sell international rights for little to no exposure once it launches in the US.

Still, Lions Gate is desperately trying to grasp a new franchise - this was suppose to be a tentpole film for them, as was Mortdecai lol. Next one I could see making $ money for them are Power Rangers & Odyssey in 2017. 2016 got nothing.

Fast and the Furious is all Vin needs. I think Forbes estimated his take on the last film to be over $40M when you factored in back end. He has 3 more pay days in that range coming up.

Aren't they betting pretty heavily on Gods of Egypt?

HOLY SHIT

Budget
$60,000,000 (estimated)

Domestic Gross
$7,605,668 (USA) (8 February 2015)

Not even 10M$ domestic. Why is Johnny Depp still getting big leading roles except for when he plays a pirates ? From the lone ranger to Transcendence to this ... Bomba after Bomba after Bomba. Why would you hire this guy ???

I liked Crimson Peak, but the marketing for it was horrible because it absolutely is not a horror movie. As Del Toro said, it's a "gothic romance" and that's exactly what it is. I really enjoyed it though myself, but misleading people to think it's something completely different was a bad idea that clearly backfired on them. I can only assume it was in an attempt to make it seem more appealing. Maybe if they had promoted it for what it really is it would have done better? Guess we'll never know.

I guess marketing believes Gothic Romance is no longer popular so instead they promote it as every other horror movie these days.

It wouldn't matter if it was an actual Gothic horror movie because the recurring theme in del Toro's horror movies is (kind of a spoiler)
humans are worst than the supernatural elements.
It's not easy to market that to the general audience who just want a ghost that goes 'Boo'.

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS made less money per theater last night than some of the employees working at them.

Paranormal Activity is in no way a bomb. It will probably make it´s budget on the opening weekend, will do decent business next as it is Halloween. This is the final one, they knew the well was drying up.
I wonder what will be the next big horror franchise. PA replaced Saw but we don´t have any big contender right now. Maybe The Conjuring/Annabelle?

Very soft opening for Jobs. Surprising, given the Social Network's success and the seemingly never-ending ad blitz/oscar push for it.

It was either too soon for a biopic about him...

... or too late, coming after the Kutcher movie. Not that anybody saw that, but it sort of poisoned the well for Jobs movies for a while.

Did they think that that kids follow production companies and directors intensely? I feel like I was more aware of this movie than their demographic.

Isn't Jem some cartoon from the 80s? Considering I had never even heard of it until a couple of months ago, and I would have been Saturday Morning aged when the cartoon originally aired, it couldn't have been all that popular, even at the time.

It was the number one syndicated cartoon at one point and was only cancelled because the doll sales underperformed once Barbie & the Rockers came into the picture.

Jem is one of those properties that was really popular at the time, but didn't leave that much of a footprint. It was the first kid-oriented program that really tapped into the popularity and vibe of MTV, and while it was obviously very girl-leaning, it had plenty of crossover appeal with all the crazy sci-fi shit going on and some corporate intrigue thrown in. The movie sounds like it dropped all the fantastical stuff for a simple underdog story, which means that its sole appeals are the fact that it was based on a cartoon that you may have seen and maybe having a bit more neon coloring than today's teeny bopper showbiz stories. It's a weird thing to be someone's passion project, like it was for Jon Chu, but hey, at least it cost chump change.
