'Lion' reigns at weekend B.O. Disney's 3D re-release bests newcomers with $22.1 mil.

Not to be outdone by two family films, Sony estimated a weekend debut of $20.6 million for "Moneyball" -- beat only by Disney's remarkable 3D re-release of "The Lion King," which won the domestic B.O. with $22.1 million.

In third place, the frame's other family-targeted title, Warner Bros.' "Dolphin Tale," grossed a projected $20.3 million from 3,507 locations, of which approximately 2,700 were in 3D.

It was a horse race since Friday among the weekend's top three players, with "Moneyball" starting the weekend on top.

Family films typically do best on Saturday and Sunday, however. That led to "The Lion King's" weekend surge -- characterized by a minimal soph-sesh drop of 27% -- while "Dolphin Tale" played admirably, considering the former pic's top-notch staying power.

Among the weekend's remaining wide releases, Lionsgate saw an OK $11.2 million gross for Taylor Lautner actioner "Abduction," boosted primarily by under-18 femmes. Meanwhile, Open Road Films' inaugural release, "Killer Elite," came in softer than expected, with an estimated $9.5 million. That's not a terrible kick off for the newbie distrib, though most bizzers -- including those at Open Road -- expected the film to hit double digits.

I think Drive is the first internet buzz movie to have not bombed in spectacular fashion, lol.

Also in before someone ignores the budget and calls it a bomb.

You're a terrible ninja, and my comment implies nothing about Drive bombing, lol.

Sigh.... Drive drop is hugely disappointing. Shit movies make bank every other week while movies like Drive have to content with making their budget back. Fuck this world.

Go see Moneyball. Best movie of 2012. If something like The Help wins Best Picture over it, there's no hope for humanity.

Don't know why your upset it will do good business in the long run.
Because I think it needs to be seen by a lot more people than the grossing is indicating.

Whats the story with Killer Elite, surely it was way over budget or something right? I can't imagine anyone budgeting that kind of money for a movie like that.

It's the first film from a new studio. I guess they haven't learned the rules of running a successful business yet?

Lautner bombed? Everything is well in this world.

He's a pretty face, but that's about it. I don't think he'll climb out of the Twilight hole.

Speaking of which: How did Patterson's movies do? Bombed as well?

Apparently The Lion King's run is going to be extended

Why wouldn't they? It's making mad bank for what was supposed to be a "two week run," and (go with me here) minimum work to put it in 3D. Kinda similar to a quick FF port-job on GBA with "a new dungeon!" to get around the "wait, didn't I play/buy this shit before!?" issue people have.

Didn't do big numbers if I recall (didn't bombed though). But I think he and Kristen Stewart are trying to play in more independent films, they said they didn't like all the fame that came with the Twilight series. And Lautner is just trying to become the next action star... although Stewart will play Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman, so I don't know anymore. :p

You're next, Woody.

hopefully they keep it in release long enough to reclaim its place as the highest grossing animation film. so much better than this pixar/dreamworks filth.

Well, Lautner has to ride on the "People's sexiest new faces" wave right now. Can't blame him for being in shitty action films.

Kinda wish the Twilight producers didn't go with a "more buff" guy so we wouldn't be subjected to this since he bulked up for that purpose.
Not that I'm complaining~

Compared to Robert Patterson? He looks better.

Is there better faces out there, though? Yes.

I'm so glad we're finally getting good movies again. August was painful, as always.

I need to see Moneyball. I would have gone Friday to see it, but I went to see Drive a second time instead.

Seriously, go see Drive if you haven't already.
