What an absolute blast from the past! This must be going on like seven years old now

What the shit? Doesn't it cost hundreds if not thousands for a table spot at comiccon, in addition to a long application process?

When someone squeezes their way into the space that you paid for it's already gotten physical.

He showed up early and took other peoples tables and set them up without making a scene. Thats a far cry from other people taking his stuff off the tables and taking them back for yourself. I guess he'll just sit there and allow you to do that as well.

The main takeaway here is that Montreal Comic-con is run by spineless sycophants and no one should give them any business until they change their leadership.

Nat Jones apparently did just that and shut Suydam up when he tried to get pissy about it. Nothing came of it except Nat Jones got his table back and Suydam knows to never, ever try to that shit on Jones again.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.

Yeah, let this dude take a table I paid several hundred dollars for. How is this a problem? I'd just take it back.

That could ruin your career.

I'd rather be the guy that stood up to a prick, than the guy that no one ever hears of again because he couldn't sell his work because some dude decided to take his table.

Edit: of course ask politely first, but if he's not willing to budge, I'm taking my table back.

That could ruin your career.

In todays internet world, if he stood up against a bigshot and word got on reddit or tumblr or whatever these kids do these days, it's very possible that even him as a small time artist would get a huuuge amount of press for 'standing up' against the prick, and then he'd become famous. Or something. I dunno.

Has the information of how many tables Arthur registered come out yet? Can't find it but I suck at google and bing.

4 - 3 = 1

"What you can’t see are Dan Parent, Rachel Richey, and Francis Manapul‘s tables. That’s because Suydam decided to get there early, set up four tables, three of which were designated for them, and move their name tags."

That doesn't tell how many tables he registered for.
If he indeed just registered for one, then that's that, he was a dumbass. If he was told/thought he had registered for more (usually happens when you are "big", and have a good amount of display/merch), he might have committed a mistake.

And the only account of talking with Arthur (hard I know) is from Dan Parent, and seemingly Arthur wasn't that "aware" of "being a jerk". Francis Manapul barely addressed the whole event.

If he registered for more than one, why would the tables next to him have other people's names on them and not his?

The comics industry is also not very well known for its members being all that upfront with each other.

The industry is really incestuous, so people get worried that making a stink will lead to that burnt bridge preventing them from a job they need later on, because everyone knows everyone else and jobs aren't necessarily assigned based on merit. So basically, a lot of writers and artists spend large amounts of time just eating shit.

But what if a angry bunch of people attending decide to dish out street justice & trash the other tables he had taken over, dragged the tables away from his location (or similar)?

Seems to me that the guy needs to be taught a lesson in manners!

But those people who did street justice wouldn't be teaching manners.

I could have put it better instead of 'trashing' i didn't mean destroying any of the stuff, just removing it from the tables, i am surprised that nobody attending said anything to him knowing how tech/media savvy people attending are likely to be.

I don't think i would have been able to stop myself from voicing my opinion at him if i were there.

He only registered for one.

He took the tables from the other guys and removed the signs that said it was for them.

He has done this before. Repeatedly.

It's not that hard to get.

So you didn't read the thread, or you would have saw that there's a huge risk for someone in the comics industry if they make such a scene.

An exaggerated point people are leaping on to try and excuse their pussiness. The tweets everyone is using as gospel even tries to make the "well some people are just non-confrontational" excuse.

Organizer should send him a bill for 3 tables.

As someone who has run a dealer's hall/artist's alley, if you did that? And that was the only punishment? Ahahahahaha.

You would have EVERYONE setting up early and pushing people off of tables.

There is NEVER enough room at a con. NEVER. Someone always misses out. If you have a space come up 20 minutes before con you can ALWAYS have someone buy a space. Guaranteed. Because someone who didn't get a space is probably still going to show up and probably plan to do something dodgy (like selling art in a hallway until they're told to move on) anyway.

It's not exaggerated at all. It's the same reason people breaking into film with low-level PA jobs or extra roles let prima donna actors steamroll them on set.

How pathetic. The organizers should be blamed for not kicking him out. Did the people who had their tables/space stolen complain to them? Is he paying someone off to ignore the complaints? I really wonder how the hell this even happens.

Barely addressed?
From Manapul's twitter (combined tweets since he tagged a lot of people):
I had no idea I was suppose to be there lol
so I actually walked over in a huff---
but he was surprisingly polite.
so I just asked him to redirect traffic.
I was actually ready to stir a fuss but--
in the end I didn't really care. I just--
I just wanted him to know that I knew.
then Fredo style I kissed him in the cheek.

Conversation between him and Erik Larsen on twitter:
yeah that's kinda weird. She came by my table and told me it was a con mix up, but let it slip that my new location was --
suppose to be theirs but that spot "didn't work for them and they got the approval from the con to move" to my assigned spot
I didn't realize that I was assigned prime real estate that they coveted lol and from my understating the bullied their way--
o an approval even making a staffer cry along the way. I'm actually just shaking my head now. Just tell the truth. Geez
he has it in his contract. The issue is not the amount it's that he took someone else's spot because it was "better"

"Doesnt' tell us how many tables he registered for?"
He took names off tables, that should tell you something.

UPDATE: Arthur Suydam’s representative Renee Witterstaetter has now responded to Bleeding Cool saying,

In response to the posts about the Montreal Comic Con this weekend and the table placement for artists at the show:

Let me state that I am the booking agent for a group of artists including Michael Golden, Arthur Suydam, Mike Zeck, and others at the convention.

When we arrived for set up on Thursday, there was a snafu with the table setups for ALL the artists. In order to correct the problem, everyone was moved.

The Montreal Comic Con, much to their credit, stepped in and found solutions for all the table placements, so that all artists had their agreed upon table amounts!

No changes were made without the shows knowledge and no artist made any arbitrary changes on their own. Any artist there for set up was informed of the changes, and we assume others were told as soon as they could be told.

In the end, none of us were where we were originally supposed to be on the map. But it appears that all the fans found us anyway and everyone has had a great time at the event. So anything else being said about the situation by third parties is simply spreading untruths.

We’d like to thank the Montreal Comic Con for their support and willingness to fix the situation. And most of all thank the fans that come to see us at the show.

Best, Renee Witterstaetter
Sounds like BS. From all other accounts, they pulled a "do you know who I am?" type thing.
