...and her cigarette catches her oxygen tube on fire.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A fire that started in a home early Tuesday morning caused a woman to have a medical emergency that resulted in her death, family members say.

The fire started just after 3:00 a.m., at a mobile home off Eastland Drive between Loudon Avenue and Industry Road.

Corie Everhart says his mother, 55-year-old Linda Buell, woke up and lit a cigarette.

"My mom was lying in bed smoking on oxygen unfortunately," says Everhart.

He says Buell fell asleep and her cigarette caught an oxygen tube on fire.

"Whenever it did that, my stepdad came running down the hall and got me," Everhart explains. "I went in there and practically dragged her out of the bed, laid her in the hallway and went back in there and put the fire out myself."

Everhart says he used a blanket and his bare feet to put out flames that had spread to the bed and carpet.

"I came back out after I got the fire out and started doing CPR and stuff on her, trying to get her back, but she couldn't come back," he says.

Everhart says his mother had been battling COPD for the past five years and only had about six more months to live. But, he says the panic of the fire caused her to have a heart attack.

Buell was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

"She actually sat and told me just yesterday," says Everhart. "We were sitting in there talking and she said she was ready to go. So, she loved God."

Everhart also suffered second and third degree burns to his right foot while trying to put out the fire.

So many bad decisions in this one.

Wow.

There was a guy at my old apartment building who died in a very similar way, and two houses over this summer the tenants set the place on fire by falling asleep in the basement with cigarettes.

Place is still gutted inside.

That would be terrible to have to try to rescue your mother, and have her pass in the flurry. CPR failing, man. But at least she was ready to go. Hopefully she didn't fight the pain of the heart attack too much, and passed with as little pain as possible.

They showed the house on the news coverage, and there was a nice big "no open flames, oxygen in use" sign on their front door.

Mind you, she seemed to have died of a heart attack as a result of being shocked by the fire.

On oxygen and still smoking...yeah.
Goes to show no matter how much technology tries to stop it, stupid hairless monkeys still find a way to let natural selection get some time to play.

It's sad, but at the same time I can see this going on that Darwin Awards site... :/

Why is this even getting brought up when she has a son?

(Not to mention being inappropriate.)

People smoking on oxygen is more common than you think. Smoking is that addictive. This woman's bad decisions started when she started smoking.

Yeah, I've had addiction specialists tell me it is more addicting than heroin. Best to never start since it is an expensive, disgusting, and health-destroying habit.

If she died by the fire caused by smoking on the bed with an oxygen tube, that is worthy of the Darwin award by itself. But she triumphed over by dying due to heart attack of all thing.
