kindof annoys me when guys only play females in MMOGS. It's misleading :lol . I wont be able to post any screens for awhile....WoW wont fit on my puny harddrive because of half-life 2.

One of you should take a shot of the entrance to Stormwind soon, ya know with the line of gargantuan statues crowding the bridgeway and that powerful choral theme music kicks into high gear. I'd just like to see that again...

You have the like the artstyle or you wont like the graphics. The game is very low tech and has alot of edges, but the textures and overall detail of the world make it look very alive and full. Running through a jungle or going into the Wailing Caverns in just awesome because each and every section of it feels unique in the way its designed with flora and other elements. Its an amzing amazing looking game and really fun to explore...if you like the style of art they use.

What looks like shit? The poly count? You bet it does...

but the art direction? You think THAT looks like shit? You need to get your eyes checked. This game has a more consistent and original design than the last 10 fantasy games put together.

Three shots I took from yesterday...

Yes, some of the locations are just awe inspiring. The tram waiting area is a work of art and genius.

actually one of the most amazing parts is the tram ride when you go under the water tunnel... it goes by fast enough that I always forget to get a screen cap. but yeah, it looks just amazing.

Technically, no
Otherwise, hell yes

You got it backwards...

The game is technically awful (purely from a visual standpoint). Even the PS2 based FFXI looks technically superior (though WoW has better textures). This game really looks quite dated overall.

However, the actual art direction is pretty damn good and kicks the shit out of every other MMORPG I've seen...

Bear in mind that some of these screenshots are taken w/ settings turned down. The game looks a bit better w/ everything turned to the max:

My FPS is showing in the first shot... that's in 1152x864 or whatever w/ everything maxed out. I usually stay above 60, but that was a busy area I guess.

I have a 6800GT PCI-e card w/ a 3.0 ghz P4 + 1G RAM, for the record.

Ok I think you are taking it a bit too far there. FFXI for PS2 looks like a washed out muddy mess. I would take the low poly look of WoW over that ANY DAY.

Also, WoW was built like this for a reason... my piece of shit computer can run this game PERFECTLY yet has hard time running EVERQUEST 1.

God bless Blizzard, they haven't forgot about the little guys. :)

Man, this game looks gorgeous. What are the recommended specs?
quite honestly people have posted saying there are playing on a P3-500 with 512MB RAM and a Geforce 2... and I'm not kidding.. that again is why the game uses low polys and texture detail..

recommended.. I have seen people say they are playing on a 1Ghz CPU with 1GB and a GeForce 3 with everything thurned on and are getting "acceptable" framerates.

the biggest thing seems to be RAM.. make sure you have at least 512MB and everything else you can adjust the display settings to accomodate.

from blizzard:

Windows® System 98/ME/2000/XP OS:

* 800 MHz or higher CPU
* 256 MB or more of RAM
* 32 MB 3D graphics card with hardware transform and lighting, such as GeForce 2 or better
* 4 GB or more of available hard drive space
* DirectX® 9.0c or above
* A 56k or higher modem with an Internet connection

Required

Operating System: Windows 98/Me/2000/XP or MAC OS 10.3.5 or Higher
Processor: 800 MHz
RAM: 256MB RAM
Hard Drive: 4GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 32 MB 3D Graphics Card

Dunno about recommended, but you'd probably want double the processor / ram / graphics card to run it comfortably.

dark, no I didn't.

Technically, many people will agree that it looks like shit ("Am I the only one who thinks this looks like shit?") though artistically, that sad soul is alone in his hatred

I can't help but feel I'm missing out on half the game when I see a screenshot w/ a Dwarf / Human / Elf in it.

At what level can you expect to cross over to the other side??

whenever you feel like creating a second character, you can experience this 'other side' at your leisure

spellchecks be damned

mid 20s and up, you'll start moving into a lot of areas where both factions have quests, like ashenvale, hillsbrad foothills, arathi highlands, and stranglethorn vale. the alliance kind of has a couple zones for high teens/low 20s that are technically contested (on pvp servers) but are actually almost exclusive to their faction while horde starts finding areas with alliance presence as early as level 20 when you can get to tarren mill.

a shot I took last week.. the trip from Stormwind to Ironforge.

umm... not for a bit... the earliest I have found being an orc was getting to orgrimmar and taking a zepplin to the eastern kingdom.. though you can't really venture out of the city as everything at level 10 was "Level ??".

I have not yet been to those areas with my orc. My Dwarf and Gnome have also not been to horde areas, though as you can see in the above shot the trip from Stormwind to Ironforge has some horde sights in it..

I'd rather focus on just that one character, though... Do you eventually get to travel the world?

aye, that you do. I'm assuming you are playing on a PvP server so you would want to wait until your level is high enough to keep you alive against those that oppose the Horde (the Alliance, is it?)

I actually think you can explore the other lands whenever you want...though I wouldn't expect to live unless you travel in numbers

Damnit, this is the first MMORPG ever that has tempted me to buy it.

I'm a huge Diablo fan, does it have that addictive Diablo aspect to it? From the pics and reviews I've seen it seems like a cross between Warcraft, Diablo, and Morrowind in a way. I've never played a Blizzard game that didn't captivate me, and I'm half afraid to buy this one because of that...

WoW = crack

I posted these impressions after playing WoW last night:

I guess it should be said first of all that I am a total MMORPG noob. I tried Everquest once for 2 days about 4 years ago, didn't like it and never gave the genre a 2nd thought until WoW started getting near-universal raves.

Eventually, its siren's call was too much to resist & I caved in.

I started tonight, got up to level 9 in one semi-long gaming session. I joined the GAF-Guild on a server and created an Undead Warrior.

The game really does feel like Diablo in the way that it always makes you feel you are accomplishing something. I haven't done much adventuring yet (I've only been to 3 or 4 main areas), but you can see from the screens above that everything in the game is gorgeous. It's a pleasure to explore this world, even when questing alone (I haven't teamed up w/ anyone yet).

The game is set up so you really have to do something boneheaded to die at first. It's obvious from the get-go where the no-go areas are, and you start out far away from them that you basically have to have a death wish to end up dead.

That being said, dying barely matters in this game. You die, you come back to life in a cemetary and have to walk back to your corpse. You can respawn anywhere near your corpse as long as it's in sight, which allows you to get out of harm's way. There are no penalties beyond a scenic walk for dying.

Overally, I'm hugely impressed. While I can't say that I will want to play this in a year or anything yet (Probably because I truly cannot comprehend the scope of the thing yet), I have had a near-total turnaround on my stance on the genre.

Fantastic game... easily one of the best of the year.
