World of Warcraft ScreenShot Thread.

Aside from the style of WoW, It's the colour and texturing that really impress me. Absolutely loved the armour in FFXI though.

Where do I get fraps? and does it interfere with performance of the game?

Also, I'm very interested in WoW. So I have 3 questions (3rd one is mainly directed to Shouta), I would ask them in the WoW thread but it moves slowly.

1) How long can you solo the game for?
presumably up until the top levels. You can quest to 60 and most non-elite quests can be soloed.. though the harder ones will take a soloer a bit more time. Elite quests can pretty much only be done in groups, but you can Abandon any quest (Elite or otherwise) at any time with no penatly.

2) What's the best class/race to solo with?
any. seriously, any class/race combo can solo. The most efficient though seems to be the Warlock, WoW's answer to the EQ necro. But you can solo with any class up to 60.

3) Do you think this game would be good as something to fill the time when seeking for a party, waiting for linkshell events or crafting in FFXI? or should it be a FFXI or WoW kind of scenario?
you can play WoW for just 15-60 minutes at a time, but I think you will be able to answer this yourself once you start. The problem for me is that I can't... While it is possible and you will feel like you got something accomplished, you find yourself just wanting to keep playing. "Oh, I'll just go turn in this quest real quick... Well, ok, he gave me another one that I should be able to finish in just another half hour... Oh wait.. here is another one, let's see what he wants.. Oh, I can do that right after.. should only add another 10-20 miuntes.." etc. The game just naturally advances and sucks you along for the ride. Before you know it you are 20th level and joining a pickup group real quick in a romp through the wailing caverns. You look at the clock and you've been in thee for 4 hours. and all you wanted to do was log on for 15 minutes.

At least that's been my experience over this past week... much to my wife's chagrin.. :P

How does the characters in SO3, Shin Megami, Suikoden 3 and FFXI look anything alike?

Maybe SO3 and Suikoden 3 look...kinda...similar at best.

But Shin Megami and Final Fantasy XI? you're way off.

Looks like this is just blind bias

one could argue that both ways.

similar pallettes. similar character proportions which are NOT anatomically correct but exaggerated and in the same manner no less. similar poses. etc.

and I don't think there is a non-fanboy out there (and in this case I am not using fanboy as a derogatory term but just to mean enthusiast) who would say if you stripped away the UI from all of those screenshots that you couldn't mistake all the screens to be from the same game...

I am not saying FFXI looks bad, just boring and derivative. I can't see how someone could call art described as such exceptional.

You certainly can dislike WoW's art, but that is the point of stylized art. You either love it or hate it. One would never say WoW's art is bland and boring.

Oh how true that is. :(

As for the tradeskills I've found mine to be very beneficial for my class, Paladin, level 24. I'm a miner(130) and Blacksmith(160) (Absolutely necessary for this combo to be a blacksmith), and I make armor that has good stat addage and AC for essentially the 20 level range a bit into 30 (I wear my own made bracers, gloves, boots, and plate). I can see up ahead though that I'm almost ready to get some higher class stuff, I just hope there are better recipies that I can find versus what I see the blacksmith offering me. :P

I'm finding WoW to be more "hardcore" than led on. I've had the game since release, played it a ton, but I'm still only just into 20, and I had to grind yesterday to get that. People in their 40's are looney.

But maybe it's just because I'm also doing all the quests I can, exploring every nook and cranny and crafting a lot. The latter two esp. as they were fairly non-fun in FFXI unless you were playing on BST, IMO. Either way, I dont understand the blind rush up the level ladder, I didnt then and I dont now.

I really liked the skill system UO had, I hope someone uses it again someday.

only just into 20?????? My brother has played EQ2 a pretty good amount over the past 8 days and just hit 15... meanwhile I have playewd WoW less and am almost 20. WoW is signficantly less hardcore, and the fact that some players are already into their 40's is a good example of that.

As for UO... hmmm.. SWG had a variation of the UO skill system and frankly it was lacking. The problem with a skill system similar to UO is there usually only ends up being a few paths to take through the skill tree anyway to "maximize" your character. While someone like you might like being able to take floral tracking as a mage, the majority of users are going to want to maximize their characters and will begin sifting things down to those 3-4 builds. Because of that focus everything the devs do has to focus on those builds. Floral Tracking might be broken or over powered, but no matter what it will probably be ignored and eventually relegated into uselessness by the devs.

In theory a skill system is great. It allows for by far the largest diversity of characters out of any game. In practice though it usually ends up the other way around. You end up with the least diverse character base and everyone a carbon copy of everyone else in an attempt to not be left behind in the power spectrum. (in UO's case everyone just becomes a tank/mage).

WoW and EQ2 are on the right path. Create a template class and then allow a modest amount of variation (in WoW's case through talents) to flesh out individuals a little. This way not every warrior is alike and are still completely different from the other 8 classes.

I didnt say it was on par with the rest, but I'm not finding it as easy to the point where sane, non-stinky people can grab 40-50 within a week.

I don't hold UO in the crazy regard that some old school folks do, but it really was a snazzy game back in T2A era. The customization, world design, guilds, PvP, exploration and crafting are all still pretty unique in their own regard. It'd be interesting to see a new take on it rather than the mild Everquest mold everything uses at least a little bit.

Everyone has seemed to lift a little part of it. But not so much as the other.

Either way. I'd just like to see someone nail PvP like UO's specitaly servers did. DAoC took a page from it for sure, but I just couldnt get into it personally.

WoW's PvP system has some serious potential. The Honor/Dishonor system, battlefields, contested areas, specialized PvP servers, and at the moment reasonably balanced classes.. I mean there are some builds that are gimp in PvP (warrior, VW Warlock, etc), but really it is pretty good currently.

For the record its PvP system is extremely similar to SWG, which in theory should have been freaking fantastic. Unfortunately a few broken character classes, a nerf bat the size of texas, and a few flavors of the weeks later and SWG is a horribly broken mess laying on top of what should be an otherwise beautiful PvP system.

Hopefully Blizzard uses a little more reason, a much more thought out approach to nerfing, and truly tries to simultaneously balance all classes instead of just radically changing one class at a time.

Yeah, I'm interested in Battlefields. I thought they removed the honor/dishonor system recently though? Or plan to? I'm not really sure on anything as I parked myself on a PvE server currnetly.

You can only have 2 professions, right? If so I might just drop Blacksmithing... I'm really not digging the idea of hunting for crap on the map.

I'll have to find another one that is suitable for a fighter to go along w/ First Aid.

Edit: looking at thottbot.com, it looks like I can either be a blacksmith / miner or a skinner / leather crafter.... :lol

I also see that First Aid is listed as a secondary skill... how many of those can you have?
yes, but first aid, cooking and fishing don't count towards those professions.

Oof, those look...awful. lol Naked creepy Elf (seriously, Mithra >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Night Elf) + wtf backgrounds = get better screenshots. The one with the nice view in the distance is good though =P

In the process of running around Crossroads/Barrens, I now have like 18 quests O.o ONe in Thunderbluff involves finding some NPC to give a package too from Crosswords... can't find that mother fucker anywhere. Seriously annoyed me so I logged.

Man, now I have to get a new video card. WoW looks alright on my computer but these screenshots I'm seeing put mine to shame. Oh, well.

Wow, everyone on the WoW boards is whining that the Warrior class is horrible... Maybe I should re-roll a character before I get too invested in it.

Please don't listen to those b.net kiddies and their ranting. Warriors are just fine. All of those people who are bitching probably played warriors in the beta when they were god's among men and during the beta they were brought back in line. They are an absolutely needed class that are good at the pve and pvp game. Only difference is now you have to be smart and use other skills to hold aggro instead of spamming the taunt button over and over.

Thunder Bluff directions: Take the south road from XR (crossroads). Go WAY south til you hit Camp T (Tauroj or something). At this camp will be a road that heads west. Take this road until you hit Thunder Bluff. The actual quest NPC to give the stuff to SHOULD be on the Elder Bluff which is the top exit from the flight tower before actually getting to the top. Just look for the tallest freaking thing in the area once you take the elevator up, run up it until the last exit before the top, then follow the signs for Elder Bluff. Then once on Elder Bluff (you will have to cross a long bridge) go to the biggest building and he will be in there. Hope that helps.

The forum posters are pissed because warriors aren't the big damage dealers.. in EQ at the beginning Warriors were in the top 3 damage dealers in the game. then somewhere along the way in MMORPGs warriors ended up being relegated to meat shields. that is now what they are in WoW. They have the ability to take mass amounts of damage but only deal a moderate amount of it back. they are pissed and want to be able to take mass damage and deal mass damage.

Ferrio's SS aren't too impressive. I'd say the easiest comparison to make as to how the game *really* looks is an even higher-res Sly Cooper. Its got a very similar soft-textured, bold-colored look to it.

more SSes.. the first one has my new uber-staff (level 21 reward for Leaders of the Fang Elite quest). and my asshole of an imp. the guy is just a jerk.

I don't have sword yet. though I am now on the right continent to get it. :P

umm.. really it doesn't matter.. I don't use either. I picked a staff because this particular one gives me insane bonuses on Int, Spirit, and STA (+7 to each). However I wouldn't be opposed to using a nice sword or dagger with like the Tork Wrench from the samophlange manual quest.

so don't bother with which weapon is better (if you are a warlock that is). just get both proficiencies and worry more about what item or item combination will give you the best stats. Obviously paired with what looks best on your character (I love how my guy looks right now).

Silly question, perhaps, but what do you do when you reach 50/50 in a weapon proficiency. Is there a trainer or something? I couldn't find one... :-/

so how do you guys take the screens? when i press the print screen key, it saves the images as a 3 megabyte tga. i don't want to have to convert every single screenshot..

weapon proficiencies (along with non-professions skills) are capped based on your level (like EQ). when you are at 50/50 gain a level and it will go to 50/55. you get 5 points per level.

unfortunately that is the only way for now. most games use the builtin DirectX frame dump system which outputs a raw image. it is mindlessly simple to implement. to do in game compression to jpeg would take a little more work from Blizzard.

It's certainly not impossible and many others have done it, but it isn't built into DirectX like the Targa dump. COH started out with only TGA dumps but a little while after launch they changed it to JPEG.

I convert every screenshot. :lol

Can you guys recommend a video card to me? My only real requirement is that it doesn't exceed $200 and will run this game well.

I have a 6600GT, which does very nicely. It was just under $200 from Newegg.com .

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-098&depa=0

Looks like it was on sale when I got it, but you can probably beat that price if you shop around.

Hm, I don't know much about this whole PCI-Express thing. Do they work in standard PCI slots? My motherboard still has AGP ones...

Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless. Any others would be appreciated.

The 6600GT comes in an AGP variant. Shop around Newegg and you'll find it.

How would this game look on a ATI 9600 Pro, Athlon 2400+ XP Barton, 512mb PC3200 ddr-ram?
I'm running about the same, only with a 9500 and 1GB RAM. at 1024x768 I get between 20-30fps in wide open areas, consistently above 30fps in more closed in areas. at 1280x960 this drops more to 14-20fps in wide open areas and 20-30fps in closed areas. To me this is acceptable, though I am probably looking at upgrading my system with my taxes to an Athlon64 and like an X700 Pro.

I'm an Undead warrior lev 24. My main professions are herbalism/alchemy. Most warriors probably go mining/blacksmith so they can make weapons or armor. Warriors are very dependent on their gear, and it's easier to make that stuff than get it from quest/drops. However, since there is no Undead Paladin, we're the only Undead class that can wear mail. You should be able to find plenty of blacksmiths to craft you armor or weapons since they have a small audience to sell to.

Herbalism/alchemy and being undead are both great for a PvP warrior, but underrated. Alchemy gives you health potions (necessary since warriors have so little healing), free action potions (gets rid of annoying snares in PvP), rage potions (generate instant rage), and cats eye elixirs (see those annoying invisible rogues). Undead don't have the attack bonuses of Orc warriors or the built-in stomp and extra hit points of Tauren warriors, but we have built-in Shadow resistance, can avoid Fear with Will of the Forsaken, and 300% longer breathing underwater helps when harvesting Stranglekelp.

The thing with the warrior is you won't deal a lot of damage. Mages and Hunters will out-DPS you. Your main purpose is to be the meat shield in a party. Also, warriors don't become men until level 35 when you get Mortal Strike. Then it's on. With Mortal Strike, you can start raping squishies (like mages) in PvP. Playing low level warrior, you feel underpowered, but later on, the real skills kick in.

Thanks for this post... We Undead Warriors have to stick together. It's good to hear that it's not all downhill from here (not that I am having a bad time playing at all... I just feel a bit underpowered and definitely would have expected to off monsters easier).

I will follow your advice and switch to over to Herbalism / Alchemy (assuming I can dump the Blacksmithing that I can already picked).

This has probably already been asked, but how does this game run on dial-suck? And I'm talking 28.8/kb dialup here. It even worth my looking into? Thanks.

by all acounts the game runs great over dialup... hehe.. at this point the bottleneck is the servers.. but even with the laggarrific play at times, as long as I have under a 400ms ping I get flawless play.
