Sony made their name over the last couple of decades off the back of their very strong, very high quality first party output. With PC gaming rapidly becoming the standard across the board, and the ecosystem that more and more of the enthusiast audience is moving to as their primary place for gaming, the reason for a lot of people to buy a PlayStation would be for Sony's first party lineup.

Which brings me to the question - how well do you think a PlayStation that only has to sell on the basis of its first party lineup do? How capable is Sony of "pulling a Nintendo", so to speak? Assuming that every third party game can be found on PC - which is pretty much how things stand at this point - would you still buy a new PlayStation just for the promise of new titles from Sony studios and franchises such as Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerrilla, Sony Santa Monica, and Asobi / God of War, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, Ghost of..., and Astro Bot? Like the current scenario, assume that ports to PC of these games are not a given (but still may and do happen intermittently).

Are you willing to buy a PlayStation just for first party games? How much would you be willing to spend on it?

Every generation of PlayStation consoles I've bought first party games have been the minority.

In fact on PS1 and PS2 I didn't bother with Sony's games outside of Gran Turismo and WipEout.

I've bought a lot more first party games on PS3/PS4/PS5, but they're not the be all and end all.

Damn, I can't change my vote. I thought the price drop/discount was referring to the games. I would buy the system day 1. It's always worked out great to buy day 1 since PS3. Never been let down doing that for the console itself.

No I buy them for 3rd party and money hat games mostly. Never did care for Playstation's 1st party output as much as Nintendo or even Microsoft. There are exceptions. TLOU1, GOW 2018, Bloodborne, Astrobot, Ghosts 1, but not many.

This gen is more about GTA, Silent Hill, Baldurs Gate, Elden Ring for me on Playstation.

That's (was) the only reason the get a Playstation. And since ps4, it's not even that great of a choice. If you wait, games come to pc (with notable exceptions, of course).

I buy them anyway because I can, but since I bought the ps5 I only played Demon's Soul remake and Astrobot. PSVR2 is great, but pcvr is far better. Not enough, I'd say (with Nintendo it's even worse: I don't care about most of their titles, as I only play Metroid and maybe Zelda or Mario in a gen).

If you play on a single system, I can see why this or that game could sway users (and I don't know how one can survive on a Nintendo console alone, but that's just me).

A few years back? Absolutely, Sony first party was incredible. Now? No, not even close, their best exclusives have not been first party, and their output has been too samey for my taste, I was super excited for yotei, but after the recent SoP I have lost all interest, to my eyes there's nothing new or exciting about it, and this trend has been going for some time now. I would much rather they bring back Infamous, hopefully with Cole back.

I dont know anybody who buys a gaming system ONLY to play first party games...no i never did that, when i bought a gamingsystem is was for playing the games i liked so also second and third party games.

NEVER for to play ONLY first party games.

Sony first party is pretty irrelevant to me at this point. Aside from Asobi I'm not particularly interested in what any of their first party studios are doing.
It's not like I find their games bad, but all the ones I've bothered to play like HFW, Ragnarok, Returnal, Tsushima, etc have been fun in a "7/10 game I bought on sale" kind of way. If anything, the stuff they've been doing with external studios (both second party or just third party money hats) have been more appealing to me, like Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Death Stranding2, etc.

That said I still see the appeal in the console as a device to play third party games, specially given how expensive PC components are where I live.

I already did that for the past 2 gens.

But if they continue to be lazy both with tech and how they make their sequels, i'm not gonna feel compelled to buy a ps6 to play immediately their games when i can wait 1-2 years and play everything much better on pc.

Hopefully they decide to bring everything day one on pc starting nextgen so i don't need to buy their underpowered device.

Yes but buy a ps5 for 2 games at launch?

Sony is lucky to not have competition anymore as it's still a great 3rd party console. It's truely the XB360 of this gen. Ms got lost in kinect and Sony lost in AAAA woke and GAAS

If its similar to PS5 in terms of first party games, fuck no. If we get like at least 5 big games per year exclusive to the console and not on PC since I can just play them there instead, sure I'll buy it.

Nah, I've never bought an entire system just for exclusives. Consoles are supposed to be custom devices, give me multiple reasons to buy your device.

The Wii gave me motion controls that changed design for multi-plat games even, the 360 gave me the first good console online service, and the PS3 was a blu-ray player with hardware back-compat for PS1-PS2.

Sony and Microsoft have watered too much down to both being AMD boxes using discord, and their first-parties are the only identity they have left.

Depending on whether they're beautiful and original games like those from Japan Studio... Yes.

If they're crap like The Last of Us, Horizon, or simple games like Ratchet... I'm not even interested.

I think it would be stupid to buy a console just because of its first party games, because in all generations most of the best games were 3rd party.

I bought all PS home consoles and portables as primary gaming devices because they were the consoles and portables that according to my personal tastes had the best catalog of games in that generation, independently if first or 3rd parties.

In all generations, most of these games I wanted to play were also in other consoles, but looking at the console exclusivities I always liked the PS ones the most, so I went for PS. And well tech wise the games also offered there the best experience or a pretty similar one compared to the best one.

PS6 will continue having a great catalog of games, the best game sub and I'll have there my huge library from previous generations too.

I think that to buy a console only for first party only makes sense as secondary gaming device, where those consoles have a very poor 3rd party support and/or a very poor performance to run the important 3rd party games, but have some great 1st party games. Which is the case of Nintendo, not PlayStation.

First party games from their studios are virtually not existent.
Fake news, AAA games take longer to be made every generation but they are there. In case of Sony, they're working in more games at the same time than ever before:

They broke sales records with titles released in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. They released the game that got more GOTY awards in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2024. And often are the company that each year published more games awarded or nominated.

I've been always a playstation guy, I bleed blue, like everyother fluid that comes out of my body.
But right now sony sucks, they better clean house and put out more what made them great to begin with.

Nope. This is personally the last gen I buy a console. I don't like Nintendo games, Xbox is all on PC and Sony is all on or will come to PC. 1 game in 10 years was great and didn't come to PC. Bloodborne. That was PS4. 1 game isn't worth buying a console. 0 games for PS5. I expect 0 for PS6.

I bought the PS4 for Bloodborne and TLOU2. These are two of my favorite games, so I was fine with spending $400 on the hardware.

I bought the PS5 for Demons Souls. I've played a few other games on it, but I feel less good about the money spent on it.

If they have another From Software exclusive for the PS6 launch, I'll be less inclined to buy it than the last two in the hopes it comes to PC. I'd certainly hold out much longer. If I could get away with not buying it, I'd rather spend that money on PC hardware or a better monitor.

I wouldn't buy it because personally I feel as though they make terrible first party games maybe not as bad as Microsoft first party games but still pretty bad.. Now don't get me wrong. I know a lot of people here like their first party games but for me, they're not inspiring and they're not innovative and they're just plain boring. The reason why I feel this way is because I never liked their 3rd person over the shoulder view cinematic games. They just were never my cup of tea. Now of course, Nintendo first party games are up my alley because they are imaginative, fantasy based games with an cartoonish anime aesthetic and I just love that. Plus their first party games are so well made. So once again, no I will never buy a Sony console strictly for First party games. I know I will sell it back within a month.

No

Because We're never getting Wipeout back

Ive always bought playstations day one. Next gen will be a wait and see. I will need to see a solid release schedule for Sony produced games before I jump in day one again.

Not with the current slate. I have bought 2 games, SPidey 2, and Helldivers 2. I am thinking about DS 2, but I think Bonanza is going to win out.

I might have bought the first 3 just for gran turismo but other than that, nah wouldn't have done that for any of them. The 3rd part and timed exclusives though...

Nah not anymore. They've proper shat it this generation, PS5 Pro will be the last Sony Console for me. Nintendo & PC are the future.

I'm not buying any 3rd party stuff on PS ever again, so it would only be 1st party. As of right now, not buying any systems just for their 1st party ever again. I'll get games on PC or other systems if they port it.

If they ever decide to offer some kind of cloud thing I could sub up to play a game or two from them at most.

If they put out a killer exclusive I just simply have to have, I still have a PS5 which will likely have everything on it through almost the entire PS6 gen also so I'm probably good for the next decade.

What a weird question. By that account no one would have bought PS1. PS1 had plenty of exclusives because many of the same games can't run on a Nintendo machine.

I really don't understand, you seem to try to argue that 3rd party games don't matter to a console. Technically it is true for Nintendo NOW, but before the Gamecube they were relying on 3rd party games for 30% rent like anyone else. Nintendo was forced to go self-reliant because they decided to not fight for power anymore.

The point of 1st party games for normal consoles, is to round out the library so more people of varying tastes have something to play. The more that 3rd parties cover a genre the less the 1st party studios need to focus on them. Nintendo being a company where you buy their machines just for their 1st party games is an economic outlier.

Gran Turismo will probably also make me cave. It's also an inexpensive way to play 3rd party games at a reasonable quality so the combination of FromSoftware, Gran Turismo, and Team Asobi is enough to justify the purchase.

Games Released (2020-2025):
5 years & they pulled out 10 games.
Here is list of all PS first party studios

North America:
  • Bend Studio: Known for Days Gone.
  • Bluepoint Games: Specializes in remakes and remasters, most recently Demon's Souls.
  • Haven Studios: Currently working on Fairgame$.
  • Insomniac Games: Creators of the Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man series.
  • Naughty Dog: Renowned for the Uncharted and The Last of Us series.
  • San Diego Studio: Primarily known for the MLB The Show franchise.
  • Santa Monica Studio: Creators of the God of War series.
  • Sucker Punch Productions: Creators of Ghost of Tsushima.
Europe:
  • Firesprite: Acquired by Sony in 2021, known for working on various projects including support for other studios.

  • Guerrilla Games: Creators of the Horizon series.

  • Housemarque: Known for Returnal and other arcade-style action games.

  • Media Molecule: Creators of Dreams and the LittleBigPlanet series.
Japan:
  • Polyphony Digital: Developers of the Gran Turismo series.
  • Team Asobi: Known for the Astro Bot series.
In my book this developers are tremendous money sink with their overinflated/overpaid workforce doing nothing.
Output of 1 game in 5 years( in some cases even 8 years) cant be profitable no mater how you do the math. Not to mention that if your game fails you are in big shit.
And I will surely not get next PS6 console for 10 games.....it is not worth. I will better wait few years & play it on PC then invest in new console.
