Please, this thread is for PSVR2 owners/potential owners only.
I really want pancake lenses without the mura-causing filter, bigger sweet spot, and wireless would be nice too although not totally necessary IMO. (I know pancake lenses seemingly don't work that well with OLED displays, but I really hope Sony can figure out that part). Almost everything about PSVR2 is great except the lenses just leave so much to be desired that I find it a shame really as Sony have some of the best lenses in the world through their Pro-camera division so I can't help but feel they should have either made pancake lenses work with OLED or just have gone with LCD.
Anyway, after the initial hype has worn off, I am left feeling wanting more, so I went and bought a PICO 4:
For $370, this was a super sweet investment. It's got pancake lenses, there's motorised IPD (this serves mainly to lock the IPD in place instead of that silly dial), the light strip on the controllers better oriented... the main thing though is that the lenses provide edge-to-edge clarity, rock-solid image, and ridiculous sharpness. Oh, and no sweet spot... the whole thing is a sweet spot! I cannot say I've missed having OLED at all. I don't think the trade-off was worth it going with OLED and fresnel lenses. Blooming, edge blur, chromatic aberration, mura, non-rgb pixel grid (i.e. Pentile... ew), the list goes on with compromises. WIth Pico 4, I got none of those issues... it just works. I use the PICO 4 wired all the time, to provide power and data (Gbit ethernet) through a single cable and this means I can literally have a rock-solid VR experience anywhere around my house connecting to SteamVR in "Godlike" mode, 150mbps bitrate at 90fps (through Virtual Desktop)... and trust me, it looks absolutely stunning. I don't think it's just the better resolution (2160x2160 vs 2000x2040)... it has to be the improved optics.
After using Pico 4 for a week, I went back to PSVR2 and yeah, the luster is totally gone. Text is not sharp enough and all the image issues I mentioned earlier were still present but amplified now that I've experience pancake lenses.
Anyway, I hope we don't have to wait another 7 years for the next iteration of PSVR. Personally, I want it now cos I'm finding it difficult to go back to PSVR2.
Edit: Me, I'd buy a PSVR2 Pro today. The PSVR2 was a mistake IMO. $600 for fresnel lenses and locked into their ecosystem. Very difficult recommendation. I gave Sony every chance, refraining from buying any other VR headset between PSVR1 and PSVR2 and they've let me down. I love Sony, they're my favourite gaming brand by a long, long way which is why this thread was very difficult to write, but I believe they need to be called out.
