WoW, EQ2, of DAoC?

I'm looking to get into a MMO and am wondering which one most people would recommend. It's gonna be one of these three, so while I'm sure there are other fine MMO's out there please help me choose between just one of the 3.

My play style will be a mix of grouping and solo'ing. Sometimes I like to just hop on and do some quests on my own without having to worry about searching for a group. I really like FFXI a lot, but was too dependent on having a good group that worked well together.

There are times that I'll just want to hop on and not HAVE to worry making sure there others around willing to help me or doing the same thing that I am.

EQ is my favourite but it's sortof obsolete now, and SOE ruined it with shitty expansions. But yeah, WoW seems to fit your preferred play style perfectly- grouping is fun as hell but it's still really easy and fun to do quests by yourself.

World of Warcraft is probably my favorite game of all time. The world is creative and immersing, the gameplay is fast and fun, and it always feels like there is so much to do (whether it be exploring the huge world or working on one of the many enjoyable tradeskills). Soloing can be done by ANY class in the game at ANY level, and for the quests that do require groups, it's easy and quick to put them together.

I think EQ2 and DAoC are both quality games as well. But WoW I'd recommend to anyone - even people who haven't liked MMORPGs in the past.

As much as I've grown to dislike WoW, if you don't want to worry about looking for other folks, that's your best option.

It's my only real complaint (other than no pvp, which i have faith that it will be added at some point) about EQ2.

thanks for the replies. Sounds like WoW it is. I've talked to people individually as well and they all tend to agree.

WoW sounds to be something really special.

Tell me about it. I still have access to the Euro beta but I'm staying away... I can't deal with another tearful goodbye like when I lost my lvl 53 character from the US beta. When I get the retail Euro version I'm going to make like 10 characters... a night elf warrior, a human mage, an orc shaman, a human paladin, a human rogue... although I'll save my human mage until they release more varied character bodies.

Who cares that it "only" takes 400 hours to max a character? Every class is so fun that I want to max them all. I really can't imagine how I'll be able to get anything done in my life next year.

I've been playing WoW for a while now and if you're into solo'ing, its really the best game out there for ya. There are a fair amount of things that annoy me about it though.

I'd give WoW a month or so before trying it out. Slick game, but it's disgustingly buggy. Not much game breaking, but theres about a half trillion little bugs on quests, abilities, pets, ect. Anything you can think of, its probably got some pretty decent bugs.

Examples: We were trying to do the level 20 Paladin quest for a friend, NOPE, bugged, denied. NPC vanishes off the map until server reset.

I cast a soulstone on my Warlock (Reraise for FFXI players) on a player, bugged, denied. Susposed to res the player with 400/700 HP/MP, instead resed him and turned his MAX HP into 400, forcing a relog.

On my Hunter, the Aspect of the Hawk skill? Bugged. If you die with it on, you need to dequip your ranged weapon and recast it, otherwise it lowers your ranged rating by the ammount its susposed to raise it.

Also on Hunter, the stable bugs that force you to relog when it glitches up, claiming you dont have a pet, pain in the ass.

Theres also a ton of latency bugs, players vanishing from view, dead corpses walking in one place, character portrats showing up wrong.

You can go on and on, theres a good set of bugs for every class and almost every situation. Blizz should've kept this in beta testing another few months. It would be better if it didnt take upwards of days to get a GM to respond to you. The horror stories of people idling their PC's for 72 hours with no GM response on the Blizz forums is slightly disturbing. I used to bitch on FFXI when it took them more than 10 mins, heh

I say wait for the Honeymoon to end, let the games get a month or two under their belts. Those basking in the glow of the newness aren't going to tell you things objectively, they're just tonic salemen.

Once the first set of nerfs roll in and time goes by, half that praise will turn into a good amount of bitching and complaining and by then you'll have a more objective middle ground to draw from.

While Guild Wars isn't exactly a MMORPG, when it comes out, its gonna come out the box with a flaming Moonblade+5 and do 100% HP damage to WoW, EQ, EQ2, and DAoC!

Don't you have an anime convention to attend?

I hope you are not insinuating that my 1st time going to any kind of convention is as nerdy as being a long time video game forum moderator that plays as a women in a MMORPG, are you?

I played FFXI
Looking at Mithra ass > Staring at a Male's rumpus for over 200 hours

because a 45 polygon female's ass looks better than a 45 polygon male's ass?

This has always been the silliest justification for playing a chick. I have no problem with people who play chicks in MMOs.. I've played a couple myself.. But fess up to it with something more honest than "Umm... I don't want to look at a dude's ass." It's not like you are running around in thongs and g-strings.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to play with these Males playing females. While I am fighting they are probably playing with 1 hand while staring at their character's ass...

:lol

you realise that anytime you grup with a female character your playing with a male, right?

:lol

I choose females in certain instances because it makes sense. The High Elves in EQ just looked horrid. I would much rather have some ok textured female as my avatar than a completely ugly male model.

umm.. the only other female I've played is my night elf Druid on WoW, though I haven't played her much. Only level 4.. lol.. and that was inspired by the absolutely gorgeous opening cinematic (hence Night Elf Druid).

Sorry should have been more clear, I wouldn't want to play with someone that picked a female character so they could ogle at a polygon ass all day.

I chose a female avatar in WoW cause she had punkier hair. I also enjoyed conflating traditional fantasy tropes by having a female priest(ess) - an undead priestess, no less.

I make no secret of the fact that I'm male, but I don't see why it really matters. It's a GAME. My character is NOT ME. At no point during playing do I ever think that I am the character.

I tend to play female characters in MMOs simply because ALL the male models are thick, muscular, huge, etc. I'd rather play a character with a more slender build, so I'm forced to go female.

back to the original topic, I haven't seen it posted anywhere else on the forum but IGN gave WoW a 9.1. That and Gamespot's 9.5 are pretty telling of most people's opinions on the game.

my only, and I mean only major concern with WOW is how often they can keep content updates coming out. if it's every 3 months then things will be fine for me. the core game is fun and I enjoy like half the classes and haven't even really tried the other half much, and I don't mind the repetitive questing when it's still far less repetitive than the fucking awful treadmill grind of virtually every other MMO (only real exception is EQ2).

Seriously, don't you have to go dress up as Cloud or something?

Haven't been to one of these things before. You seem to have extensive knowledge of them, is a costume required?

yeah, though you might not have enough time to make a really good costume if you're just starting now

I'm sure you can just ask if you want some suggestions for easy to do ones
