Digital Foundry Hands On: Hogwarts Legacy on Switch 2 Lacks the Current Gen Wow Factor.

Switch 2 is closer to PS5 than PS5 is too top of the line PC (GPU alone PS5 is just 3.5 times more powerful only), of course it's a very on par version, just running at lower resolution and frame rate, not even a Switch type situation compared to PS4, but just a little behind the XSS which runs basically the same games with less resolution and frame rate, it's even better than XSS in terms of memory configuration.

You just have to have eyes to see, games graphics are already being hit by diminishing return after 8th gen.
Mate, it will be fine overall, but you are putting next-gen cope there. "I am a lot closer in height to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar than he is to the K2 peak…" is how it reads.

Despite the specs, memory advantage goes with the Switch 2 no doubt, in the context of this game there is a wide enough image quality and especially graphical features gap compared to the PS5 release (including RT effects if you can stomach 30 or 40 FPS).

If you wanna destroy your eyesight then go ahead and play this version of the game on the switch 2. I'm sure that low resolution, uneven framerate, and lowered textures will do wonders for your eyeballs. Buy this game on more capable platforms people.

Yes, the game looks Nothing like the Switch 1 version… DF just can't hold the L.

Why are you comparing the switch 1 version to the switch 2 version and not comparing the switch 2 version to the series s, series x, and ps5 versions? Of course it'll look better on a machine that was outdated on launch and has a tegra x1 powering it lol. It's like saying a game looks better on the ps4 compared to the ps3 version.

The Switch 2 ports will only get better. But this looks pretty decent to me and after the original on the Switch..... Night and day difference.

Not everybody owns multiple consoles and spends far too much time playing videogames. Some will simply buy a Switch 2 like the original. They will buy it for Nintendo's own first party titles and third party support will be a bonus. They will play this totally unaware of the frame rate and textures etc. And the fact it will look better on dedicated consoles. But with your reasoning nobody should then buy the PS5/PRO or Series X versions. As they are all inferior to the PC version on high settings.

I have yet to encounter gamers blinded for playing games on Xbox Series S.

It's a 720p port. For a console that's supposed to be much more powerful than a PS4, how is this acceptable?

Who says it's supposed to be much more powerful than a PS4? No sane person has ever claimed that. It's better than PS4 in some ways, but overall it's in that general vicinity. It's nowhere near current gen power.

Isn't playing this version (the current-gen version) on a portable device a wow factor enough?
You could do this on the game's release, 2 years ago. The Steam Deck released in 2022 and Hogwarts released in 2023. Plus, no stained glass windows blocking the views on the Steam Deck version.

You're not spending $500 on the Switch 2 to get current gen wow factor. And you most certainly won't be getting next gen wow factor which starts in just 2 years.

If some ports can trounce the PS4 and rival the Series S, while others are much closer to the PS4, then it's a dev skill issue, not a console issue.

The switch 2 is about 2/3 of a series S when it comes to visuals and performance. More than enough for an hybrid console.
When Docked. Switch 2 portable can't do anything close to a Series S.

Wake up.

Digital Foundry recently got hands on with the Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy during a Nintendo preview event, and they weren't impressed. Performance is locked to 30fps with some drops in intensive areas, and the game seems to be lacking the additional visual elements found on Series X, PS5, PC, and even Series S/Steam Deck. The game runs at 720p supposedly with DLSS enabled in docked mode, with a "rather soft image overall".

Some of the compromises made in the PS4, Xbox One, and original Switch versions are still intact for the Switch 2 version, including the stained glass walkways that block the wide views to the open world. This was spotted in a screenshot from the recent Nintendo Creator's Voice video.

How do we feel about the Switch 2's capabilities now vs other current consoles, given this new information?

It doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is how Nintendo games look and feel compared to Switch 1. I mean FFS I played Hogwarts on a 4090. Switch 2 aint going to outdo that.

In docked mode, is it not more powerful than a PS4? not saying it's equivalent to PS5

The obscene amount of framing in these topics here is very concerning. People saying that DF are saying this or doing that for reason X or Y without evidence is so sad.

How about you just listen to the words coming out of their mouths before making your own assumptions.

If you're not here to talk seriously about tech or whatever the OP is about, you should just get the F out and get a life.

I don't understand why the forum rules aren't enforced in these topics.

So much fuss over a lazy port...
When there examples like Cyberpunk or Streetfighter that look far better than the Ps4 versions.

Does Digital Foundry get paid for trash talking about Switch 2 or something?

DF reporting objective facts about the technical performance of a game on Switch 2 is "trash talking Switch 2" now?!

I'm sorry but that's pathetic.

Did the diehard Xbot green rats suddenly roll over and become overnight Switch fans while I wasn't looking or something?

This level of persecution complex is usually sported by the most delusional of fanboys.

It's pretty much right around PS4 performance when docked, maybe slightly below, but with more modern GPU features, more memory, and faster storage. So it will outperform it in certain games (Cyberpunk etc), while others seem to be pretty much identical to the PS4 versions (Elden Ring, Yakuza, FF7R, etc).

It's far below PS4 Pro in pure compute, but it can perhaps reach similar results using DLSS, depending on the game (DLSS is far from free).

It doesn't matter how it looks. It matters how it runs.

There is 0 evidence Cyberpunk runs well. On the contrary.

These ports shouldn't even exist if they can't even run stable.

Wake up.

And series S unplugged can't do anything against my abacus 🧮. What's the point?

Docked switch 2 is about 2/3 of a series S, a bit more than 1/3 in portable mode.

In both cases, with more RAM and superior features. That's as best as one can wish for an hybrid console below 500 bucks. Y'all really feel threatened, it's so weird.

What I mean is between Switch 2 and PS5 there's not even close the same situation it was between Switch 1 and PS4, many like shitting on Nintendo consoles because of the raw power, yet they still play on console and think their versions are close to PC versions which whenever the devs want, are way beyond any console version and this is one of those games.

Jesus christ the nitendo fans are vicious...the console is a handheld with the compute power somewhat above a ps4 with modern features which allow it to scale better with new engines and dlss to punch above its weight. Its time to set realistic expectations and wait for the console launch instead of attacking anyone who dares question the switch 2 as a next gen console.

I don't know why people have put the idea in their head that this thing should compete with the series S consistently due to the rabid hype train cherry-picked videos and clips, which focus on the dlss image quality edge while ignoring everything else for context. Its a great handheld but its never going to be a rival to the series S consistently outside of rare scenarios which utilize to compete or beat it in image quality only outside of fidelity/performance.
