That was gorgeous. When I was young I went through a phase were I was REALLY in to astrology... living in upstate I can remember many a night standing outside our house in our driveway staring up in the sky in delight because I could see the dippers above our house.... even now sometimes at night I'll go out back and look up in the sky... there is just something truly awe-inspiring about thinking of the distances involved...

yeah same here, also the three day August 2003 Ontario/New York blackout was really amazing. Very clear but somewhat cloudy skies. Good time to fire up the old telescope. :)

Quick correction: I believe you mean astronomy.

No I meant astrology because I wanted to tie it in to my reference to the Dippers, or Ursa Major/Asia Minor, Big Bear, Little Bear... whatever you choose to call them... I only briefly dabbled in astronomy, though the whole solar system, planet, etc stuff interests me as well. Though astrology deals more with the belief that the celestial bodies play a part in our lives I was only interested in the aspect of the create shapes in the sky and the stories behind them, be they greek, tribal, etc...

Awesome.

I still remember the nights I spent out in the country in Australia for a family reunion, could actually see the gases in the Milky Way clearly.

At home, there's a field right next to where I lived. Since I lived in the suburbs of the suburbs, I could see the night sky so clearly... I hadn't actually gone out to the field in a good three years. That brought me right back, save for the satellite.

Wish i could see stars like that from home. The only time ever that I have see stars like that was once in the outback, near Alice Springs. It was pitch black, and when they call it the milky way, they really mean it. It was absolutely stunning, not to meantion the Southern Cross was really bright. The stars were so bright that you could see the cleary out line of the dark nebula that's behind the Southern Cross.

There's a stretch of highway through the middle of Oahu that has no lighting whatsoever except for the occasional car. Wow was that a beautiful sky.

Free Republic? I'm puzzled.

Don't think I've ever been anywhere where the sky was that clear -- would be nice to, though.

Looks like a reeeeaaally long exposure on that shot. Beautiful, and humbling.
Technical information: The photo was obtained on September 4, 2004 at about 20:45 hrs local time (00:45 hrs UT) with a Nikon D100 digital camera with a Sigma 20mm/f1.8 lens. The exposure time was about 40 sec at 1600 ASA.

Super high-res pic after the link, too.
