WTF? WoW found its match?

SEOUL, South Korea/SEATTLE, WA, April 29, 2005 -- NCsoft, the world’s top developer of online computer games is pleased to announce Guild Wars™, the mission-based competitive online role playing game, produced by its Seattle-based ArenaNet studio has breached the end-user goal of five players online at one given moment.

In the fantasy world of Guild Wars where players can engage in cooperative group combat, in single player adventures, or in large head-to-head guild battles these five players have found a home away from the popular title World of Warcraft. Guild Wars is a game that will constantly evolve by creating a new pay to play structure subtle enough to keep these players on-board.

“We’re excited about Guild Wars,” said OrinGA of Gaming-Age forums, one of the original supporters of the title and leader of the five player party that comprises the entirety of the Guild Wars player-base. "We believe that players who play WoW for 15 a month just wont enjoy the poorly supported and ugly world of Guild Wars the way we do."

Not exactly an ugly world from these pics and the beta I was in a whiles ago...the game is standard Diablo-alike fare...not even the same genre as WoW...no clue why WoW fans keep thinking this game is competition and therefore need to downplay it every chance they get

that said...in PvE terms it's standard Diablo-alike fare...not as good as Diablo II and not worth the entry fee unless you REALLY need some new slash and hack levels...still not as bad as the blizzard kids make it sound...PvP is unkown to me

don't worry MAF...he'll come to know your ways soon enough :b

just wanted to clarify my previous post:

GW impressions: trust
GW impressions from MMO fans who don't realize that GW is not a MMO: take with a grain of salt

requisite statements: there is no way one can compare GW to WoW on a value basis without having played both games extensively...so I'm not going to try...all I know is that Diablo II is still a better game than GW and Diablo II is a fucking old, and more importantly, cheap game that is still a blast to play. If you want to have fun then just get the game that redefined the Diablo-alike genre and get Diablo II

or WoW

if you like wasting money

I'm enjoying Guild Wars quite a bit so far. When I get bored of it, I take a break and play my DS. Good times.

This thread is clearly the result of MAF's anger over not getting enough replies in the "favorite salad dressing" thread. :D

Had a good time with the last beta, but I've yet to install my retail version.

Yeah, but aren't you the guy that buys everything and never even opens up the boxes? :)

Nah. I opened up GW in order to check out the artbook, rip the soundtrack to my iPod, and stash the receipt amongst the rest of the paperwork. I'll hit up GW once I'm done with Stella Deus.

Stella Deus looks nifty.

Your perception would be accurate. :)

My bro and I are both hooked. Brings back a certain Tactics Ogre / Final Fantasy Tactics vibe that's been lacking all gen.

Sorry guys, I'm too busy playing with Tiger.

Enjoy your games.

(Is GW bad?! Everyone I've spoken to who has played it on GAF seems to enjoy it! WHAT GIVES?!?!)

How many threads is this by MAF to blast Guild Wars? I think we get it. You don't like the game. Move on already.

For the record, there are plenty of us that are loving GW. There were thousands of players online last night, and I know that me and four of my friends had a blast, building our characters and playing until 3 AM. I'm looking forward to many more nights of exploring a beautiful world, building my character, completing quests, and going on missions.

Oh, and anyone who says they don't like the game have to play it long enough to get out of the tutorial section of the game and into Post-Searing Ascalon. The game ramps up a lot after that, and once you get into the missions, the game is a blast.

Hell, I'm really enjoying pre-searing Ascalon since I didn't get to do as many quests there as I'd have liked in the final beta event.

I'm building up my ranger right now, which I will end up giving a monk subjob to, but I think I'm going to delete my current fighter character and make a necromancer instead, not sure what secondary job to give him/her though.

I make the threads you want just like you make the threads you want. Shut up, sit down. Dont wanna play MAF's games? Dont fuckin reply.

Everquest * Warcraft * Shit Art = World of Warcraft[/QUOTE]
Nope, not Everquest I at least. WoW is no EQ1, I lost interest in WoW like 2 months after launch, I played EQ for years. The only MMORPG that can rival with EQ was UO in its golden age. I don't think there will ever be another game like EQ.

WoW didn't seem to have the same impact on the MMORPG world that many expected, at least not with FFXI.

There was a lot of talk last year that it would hit the FFXI usebase but it barely made a dent. All we lost were the loners who couldn't figure out how to play as a team and wanted to solo everything, which is a good thing since we have no use for people like that in FFXI where most of the game is team oriented and group-objective driven.

GW's release though saw a lot of my friends switch to that game. And SE just started one of their promotional campaigns to get people to come back.

WoW hit 1.5 million, or some insane number. Just cause it didnt make a dent in FFXI doesnt mean its not a good game, it just means FFXI players are fucking idiots.

Has Blizzard become any more competent when it comes to actually running an MMO in recent months? I'm considering trying it out again, but not if I'm going to be bombarded with issues.

I heard lots of people cancelled their WoW subscription soon after joining due to log-in issues.

This is one such example: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=104612
The servers stablity is a big issue, but so is the fact that within 2 months time you can hit lvl 60, the lack of end game content, and the fact that you can see many incompete areas/zones. The lack of polish on the 50+ zones is clearly seen too. Take the plaguelands for example, they should be the most amazing zones in game, but instead they are a normal human area with a yellowish/red fog (big whoop). Also the WoW community is one of the worse I have ever seen. The general boards make IGN forums seem mature. Blizz still needs a lot of work to make the game successful in the long run.

Yeah pretty much everything I heard from my friends. And I'm a traditional Blizzard fan. WoW is their first major release which I didn't buy because of all those issues.

As for the community being bad, It's probably the biggest problem of them all. All MMORPGs will have griefers and the currency sellers who camp monsters for currency which they sell to IGE for cash.

What Blizz needs to do is to fix their PvP system to avoid abuse. But I think the game is so fundamentally structured toward's self gratification that it can't be fixed and people who choose to act like asses with prevail.

I never had any problems with the people in WoW. Then again, I do play on a RP server (a bit of an idiot filter).

Heh, I was thinking about making a warrior and deleting my necromancer. :) I keep getting my ass kicked whenever I try to go into the catacombs. Might just take on the warrior class as a secondary job and see if that helps.

Or maybe they leveled their Dragoon/Dark Knight/Monk/Samurai into the 60s only to realize that there are too many damage dealers, that only a certain combination of classes work for a party, and that they're going to have to spend the rest of their FFXI lives sitting in jueno LFG. I have literally watched as SquareEnix nerfed the shit out of Dragoons with each and every patch. Then I watched as my own in game friends refused to party with me because my class was insanely gimped. Then I watched (well I didn't really watch, I actually left for hours at a time to do other things) as my Dragoon sat in Jeuno for 8+ hours at a time LFG and never once getting an invite. The way FFXI is structured is you spend months leveling whatever your favorite class is for months and months at a time. Then you get to 60+ and realize that unless you picked the optimal class way back when, you're pretty much fucked.

So yeah, you may be right. You may have lost a lot of loners who didn't know how to play as a team. But god forbid maybe some of those people just wanted to go to a game where they could log on and...I dunno...play the fucking game? Ok, I'm done with my rant of why I now hate FFXI.

How are you getting your ass kicked in the Catacombs? I slaughtered a healthy chunk of it with just my sad little Level 5 Mesmer.

Face it, Drinky, not everyone is as gifted as you.

I started over with a necromancer, and cannot get past a certain mission (clearing out all the enemies for a trainer). I'm still at level two, which probably explains why. :) I finally left and have been doing other missions instead until I'm at a higher level.
