I swear, I think I'm the only one here on Gaf whose favorite gacha game is Star Rail. It's the only one I feel invested in like 90% of the story and characters (Zenless is probably around 70-80%, and WuWa's story technically improved once it reached 2.0 but still feels significantly inferior to HSR and even ZZZ). I'm not saying there isn't the occasional fumble (2.1 irked me for being the "pull Aventurine" update to such an extent everyone else just hung around and chilled, and 2.6 was…….a choice), but the highs are insane. I admit, the original Luofu story was eh, but Belebog was great, Penacony in 2.0 and 2.2 was superb (and 2.3 being a nice little epilogue), the return to Luofu in 2.4-2.5 was a significant improvement over the planet's original storyline (and the A Foxian Tale event, with the Ghost Hunting Squad, was peak), and despite my initial disinterest in the new planet's theme/aesthetic, 3.0 and 3.1 have been solid so far.
The power creep means nothing to me since it generally doesn't affect the main story from what I've seen, but rather only the end game modes which means all the drama over power creep is literally over 100-200 Stellar Jade every two weeks which is honestly hilarious to me. In fact, power creep makes sense to me, shouldn't Hoyo give SOMETHING in particular to players who are actually financially investing in the game versus those who don't spend a dime or at most buy the $5 "90 Jade per day" pack?
I mean, I feel like the drama existing over this is like saying someone's trading card game deck that is literally the starter deck itself should be just as viable playing against a player who bought several booster pack boxes. That doesn't make any sense.
I feel this is why so many tier list content creators come off as disingenuous about this because they know tiers don't matter much for the main story and that one can obtain the majority of the end game mode rewards as long as they have a decent variety of units which anyone who's been playing the game for the majority of its lifetime should have by now no matter how much, little, or nothing they've spent. But drama equals views, so they have to hype up the power creep drama and their audience feeds into it.
Like, the last end game mode update, my Tribbie was half-built (skill/Ult/Talent traces only at 6/10, meh relics, even more meh ornaments) but I put her on one of my teams for the final fight regardless because I wanted to use her. I still managed to clear with 20 turns left (barely, I admit, but still) despite that setback.
A good deal of people I've seen complaining just seem to throw whatever units they have it that match the elemental weaknesses without putting any more thought into it besides that. One can easily find team guides for any new end game mode update, and yes, they include options for F2P players, still recommending old 4 star units even.
Not to mention it's already been confirmed older units will be buffed, 4 were confirmed in the 3.2 update video, and more are on the way.
Admittedly, maybe this is the downside of the HSR team being more generous with rewards compared to Genshin. It can lead to making fans happy…..but that happiness can easily turn to entitlement, which is especially hilarious for people who aren't even spending any money on the game.
As The Simpsons said perfectly:
Comic Book Guy: Rest assured I was on the Internet within minutes, registering my disgust throughout the world.
Bart: Hey, I know it wasn't great, but what right do you have to complain?
Comic Book Guy: As a loyal viewer, I feel they owe me.
Bart: What? They've given you hundreds of hours of entertainment for free! What could they possibly owe you? I mean, if anything, you owe them!
Comic Book Guy: …….worst episode ever.
Now, to be clear, I'm not saying players can't feel frustrated, but if that frustration leads to a sense of entitlement, that's when I call such behavior out. Plus, I've seen a few of the complainers actually insult or mock the people who have spent some money in the game, and at that point I lost all sympathy for those particular complainers, as attacking the people who are the ones keeping the game running is fucking idiotic and immature.
And to be clear, I'm referring to other forums like gamefaqs with such behavior, as no one, at least in the ZZZ and WuWa threads (I can't speak for Genshin as that game lost me three months in, I liked some of the characters but it just didn't grab me much, also STFU Paimon) acts this way, or if they have then it's rare and probably by some random infrequent poster who I wouldn't remember.
Sorry for the length, but what can I say? Star Rail engages me in a way that no other gacha has yet to do. Just how I feel.
