X-Men Apocalypse Review Thread

By Synder's own admittance, the DCEU is more a sandbox than anything else. Directors can come in and do their own thing with their individual films. There's a general outline of plot points, timelines, and such that he has and makes everyone aware of/adhere to, but he likely won't be exerting a ton of creative control over projects that are not his own. And even if that were ever on the table, WB sure as hell isn't going to let him start meddling in other movies after BvS.
Pretty much my thoughts on the issue. Why on earth would WB let Snyder tinker with WW after the critical Armageddon BvS received?

feeling blue?

Give us 8 more avatars i dont care. As long as it means he will still be working in the blockbuster landscape. The future otherwise is looking a bit bleak right now

Even Nolan is bouncing and moving onto Spielberg trajectory with a war drama

Damn. I was looking forward to this since DOFP was so good but every trailer I scene reduced the hype. I'll probably still watch it with low expectations.

Singer is great. XMEN 1 and 2 are great. And they are very much XMEN films that get the characters right. Righter than a lot of superhero films.

I have been reading the X-Men comics for better than 20 years and I can't even see where you are coming from with this claim. Could you maybe give a specific example of getting a character right, aside from Wolverine, Magneto, and Xavier?

Like, when did film Cyclops ever act at all like comic book Cyke? How about Havok, Storm, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Moira, or Beast?

Who do you think Singer actually got right?

that all sounds really great to me

dude gets major themes from thing, feels connected to them, adapts those themes and puts them in front of whatever else

dude is opposite snyder

Sure, the stuff Singer is interested in, he absolutely gets right. The relationship between Magneto and Prof. X is great. The problem is that almost everyone else feels peripheral in his movies. X1 and X2 at least had Jackman doing Wolverine but JLaw was horseshit in DOFP and it sounds she's even worse in Apoc.

I think Singer got the main interactions between the characters very right and I think he focused on the thing most important to focus on, given what superhero movies were at the time

I love his take on Rogue. I love what he did with her and Iceman. tweaks and all. I love Jean.

do I not like some of it? did he choose a particular set of characters and left others to the background? sure, you must. They're very much Wolverine movies, in the end

but he kept the themes that I liked about it in there, and I think it ultimately paid off

they're hardly perfect films. But I dont know about saying he doesnt get it and that they're not "proper xmen films"

I dont know how different you'd have to make one to claim that these are just super wrong

they're films about segregation, being rejected, being a teenager, feeling different

all of that's in there. I dont think many others would have focused on that

On topic: I'm still interested in it. I've always enjoyed the X films, despite never really liking the X-Men.

They're not. Wonder Woman, however it turns out, will be Patty Jenkins' movie.

Synder will likely catch heat if it turns out bad though, as people think he occupies the same role as Feige at Marvel.

I wonder if this is the Thor 2 of X-Men movies.

It won't be. Even that movie isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If anything it's The Last Stand.

And why does everyone keep calling it Thor 2???

It's not Thor 2, it's just THOR: THE DARK WORLD

SHOW ME WHERE IT SAYS 2 ON THE TITLE OF THE FILM

Thor 2 is the definition of okay bland forgettable inoffensive movie that caters to whatever

which ultimately makes it worse than bad-but-tried-something

How many shit xmen movies before fox will consider giving the movie rights back to marvel, or at least lease them the rights to make movies that are actually good and tie in to MCU?

I love that every superhero movie thread has a point where we all just stop and shit on Thor TDW.

It's the one thing keeping comic movie-Gaf together.

Especially with X-Men 1 being bad, like how the fuck can anyone say that movie got X-Men right? no just no. X-Men is about the assemble cast but they felt more like Wolverine films with Magneto and Xavier guest starring, the rest? what others? It's just all those three.

This is not looking good. I was hoping for an upswing after the turd fest that is known as Days of Future Past.

Bryan Singer is done in my book if this movie fails to please me. I suppose I can thank Matthew Vaughn for First Class, the last great X-men movie. Singer ruined the original trilogy by leaving (so he could in turn ruin the first Superman reboot), now he is ruining this trilogy(?) by directing it.

I hope Disney / Marvel gets the rights back soon. 20th Century Fox is incompetent. They have so much material to work with. They have wasted Hugh Jackman on horrible standalone movies. If this movie is as bad as I have heard, X-men is now batting .500 (X1, X2, X:FC).

Don't even get me started on the Fantastic Four. One of my favorite characters is wasting away with these morons (Silver Surfer).

The way Cap won. Amazing how A-List actor Chris Evans ended up with the best comic book trilogy of all time. TALENT always wins.

X-men Apocalypse is garbage.
The Dark Knight Rises was trash.
Even Return of the Jedi was horrible compared to the 2 previous SW films.

None of them seem to know how to end a trilogy on a good note. I'm horrified @ what Apocalypse will do to Oscar Isaac's careers since he's one of my faves.

Yet the Captain America trilogy ended on the STRONGEST note on equal footing with Winter Soldier.

Critical acclaim? Check.
Incredible lead actors? Check.
Insane box office numbers? Check.

Best trilogy since Lord of the Rings.

LMAOOOOOO the way everyone underestimated Cap and yet now everyone's eating his dust including all the X-men.

This 4chan post is quite amusing.

0.

Nobody cares that much about X-Men.

I feel like an outcast when I read this.
X-Men was THE comic book property in the 90s when I grew up.

Literally my childhood and favorite comic book IP outside of Batman
It does feel like no one gives a shit anymore

That's never happening. Deadpool's success alone will insure that.

I have to say, I'm disappointed by the response, given Singer's excellent track record with the first three X-Men films he directed. I expect I'll like it more than the critics have tended to, but I was hoping for another home run (particularly since Singer's take on the X-Men has always had a really aggressive hatedom online that I've never agreed with).

That's disappointing. I was hoping for another DOFP-level movie.

At this rate I'll be watching any and all upcoming comic book mediocrities on video. Civil War is another one I didn't bother to get off my ass to go watch.

Civil War is good though, and why not? It's only been in theatres for barely two weeks globally.
