I'm out and... yup.

It's nowhere near as bad as it could have been. The worst superhero film I ever watched was Blade: Trinity, and it's much better than that. But.

First of all, the script is rubbish. If you drank every time you heard a line that's turned up in a dozen films before, you'd be smashed by the end of the first act. It's not that any of the dialogue is particularly bad, it's just so overdone. Samples (no spoilers):
"People always fear what they do not understand." "I buried it like I buried my family."
My girlfriend and I were literally saying the responses to each other before they happened.

Second, I spent quite a lot of the run time wishing I was watching X-2 instead. This is partly because X-2 is good and partly because the film's choice to use those same heroes but worse (and stealing a couple of other plot points) kind of makes you think about it even if you don't want to.

Third... I can't tell if it's Singer or the producers, but nobody on this film seems to understand why any of the bits they've included worked. Quicksilver's sequence in DoFP didn't work when you broke it down, but it made sense at the time, and you enjoyed it there. Not the case here. Jennifer Lawrence seems to be there because someone knows she's popular, and nothing else. And so on, and so forth.

On balance, I'd probably give it 3 stars, but then I am a huge sucker for superhero films. There's some (not many, but some) creative ideas with the characters... but it's not particularly engaging, and I think the phrase "holding pattern" is worryingly accurate.

I dont get the First class dislike, the scene with Erik and charles fighting on the beach is my favorite from the franchise and has more emotions than the majority of the MCU and DC movies.

Not to mention that fassbender is the best actor working in comic book movies today, by lightyears.

Fassbender>>>>>>>> anybody else.

Fassbender in FC was great but what's with his accent change at the end of the movie?

Actually not awful, Jennifer Lawrence was the worst thing about it, if you know the comics then you'll have fun.

Saw it today, loved it. Much better then Civil War/Batman. Dead Pool and this have been the best comic book movies of the year. Future Past is still the best so far but this was good in its own right, the group I was with agreed too. Everyone in the cinema went nuts for Quicksilver. Spidey scene was good in CW but QS really got people excited.

Is it me or are Singer's X Men films much darker in tone?

This is why I love these movies so much. Using human events with mutant influence really works, some of the most horrific moments in mankind's history and some of our miricles with mutants being involved seems far easier to swallow in this fantastical yet grounded universe. I just find it easier to digest and more importantly, fascinating to ponder.

Love Singer style.

Half of a great movie, half of a really disappointing one. Overall it was definitely "fun", and I'm still a big fan of Singer's take on X-men. Starting from a certain subplot in the middle of the film, it really went downhill in terms of imagination and interesting writing though. I could feel all the Kinberg fanservice leaking everything. So transparent and lame.

What worked:
- Awesome score. Beats the other two superhero films this year hands down.
- Great opening titles sequence. Fun and imaginative.
- Loved the introduction of the new mutants in the various episodic scenes around the world in the first act.
- Angel getting his metal wings is an AMAZING scene imo.
- Storm and Cyclops was doing really well. Closest to their comic characters so far.
- Oscar Isaac did everything he could with the limited writing for Apocalypse and more.
-
First time I felt the Phoenix Force was presented with a sense of true power.

What didn't work:
- The mid-film
Weapon X facility
subplot was completely extraneous and killed the pacing. Added nothing to the film, felt really artificial. Shouldn't have been there.
- It's obvious they cut a lot more development between the X-men in the first half. Jubilee is hardly in the movie at all and has zero real scenes. Wtf?
- The big action at the end felt like videogame filler. The climatic battle with Apocalypse was straight up out-of-budget garbage.
- Magneto's character arc. I don't buy it. It feels contrived for the purpose of the film's overall direction rather than something the character would actually go through.

The Weapon X gave us Jackman violence porn though and damn it is good.^~^

Saw it last night. I would rate just behind Dofp.
Mags just can't catch a break. Really felt bad for him. My gf was sobbing when that thing happened.

I thought dofp and fc were much better, and the reasons mainly being more mutant characters focused.

Superhero shows where you get an omnipotent baddie out from nowhere and doing some disaster end of world shit, yeah those didn't work well.

Apocalypse IMO is 6.5 show, huge downgrade from dofp.

And end of show spoiler
why did apocalypse get rekt so easily by Jeane?

Are we just supposed to accept the fact that the ages of Cyclops, Jean, etc dont match up to the current timeline (post DoFP)?

They should be around 20s in Apocalypse. So theyre around 50 in the current timeline right?

They should really just say fuck the timeline and bring the current actors into the present.

JLaw needs a franchise now since Hunger Games and this are over. I don't think movies like Passengers are going to be big hits for her.

Maybe she doesn't want to be a blockbuster movie star though...

Is it at least better than Thor 2?

well.... that's kinda hard to compare against cuz thor was a single-hero movie

this one is more comparable to BvS, Avengers/Ultron/CivWar, cuz multi-heroes

and it's better than BvS.... which i have been advised by gaf, to be actually thor (2): the dark world

so........... yes? i guess :D???

Just got out the cinema. It was quite fun, but plenty dumb and no part really made me feel like "I've been waiting for this". Coulda cut a good 20-40 mins.

Fun tho.

I liked it a lot. Not as much as Civil War of course and not as good as DoFP either, but I thought it was extremely entertaining with some really cool scenes. It helps that Fassbender, McAvoy and Isaac are among the best actors working today. They really did elevate the meh source material in each and every scene. And I was quite surprised that I wound up liking the new (old?) young mutants. Even Sansa Jean was handled quite well! Lawrence is still a terrible Mystique but she didn't phone it in as much as the previous movie IMO and wasn't as much "in the way."

Overall, a thumbs up from me. I'm glad I didn't pay heed to all those nasty reviews. I highly recommend it to super hero movie fans and especially those who have seen the previous X-Men movies.

I thought the film was boring. My gf did too and she's the reason I went to see it. Just seemed to drag on and honestly I didn't care what was going on. The quicksilver scenes were good though.

Loved it. I can't comprehend the comparisons to Last Stand, Apocalypse is nowhere near this bad. And dammit, I can't grow tired of those Quicksilver scenes. Damn good movie.

Got back from seeing it. I thought it was pretty good albeit the second half was much worse than the first half.

It's a decent popcorn movie, I don't know why it was reviewed so negatively.

I thought the score was decent. It's around 50-ish right? Which is middling. I'd probably give it around 65-70 but critics obviously have higher standard than peons like us. It's entertaining but not memorable like DoFP. That X-Men theme is still Godly though.

Watched it on saturday, i liked it (not as much as DOFP) although the last battle/ending felt somewhat short it should be around the 60-70% on RT IMHO.

Loved Psylocke!

I liked it. Much better than I expected. I have a feeling they will reboot from here. We won't get to see what ultimately turns Mystique bad

I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first movie, X2, or DoFP. But still rank it much higher than X3.

The ending was very
DragonBall Z
, which wasn't terrible. I still feel like Singer was trying to correct things done wrong in X3
(Phoenix)
and Origins Wolverine, but they didn't necessarily need correcting since it already was in the last movie.

Anyway, it was still fun, will catch the next one.

Loved it, thought it was more enjoyable than the civil war. Clearly I'm doing movie watching wrong, but there you go.

I just saw it and it was solid, but as a whole I saw it as a missed opportunity for many reasons. First Class was so original and I love it for that, and DoFP seemed like a means to softly reboot the series so they can use the original characters, but Apocalypse seemed to have the same problem DoFP had but worse. It just set-up characters in a disappointing and rushed way. Characters like Storm and Nightcrawler deserved better. Even Cyclops and Jean to some extent, I mean we didn't even spend much time with them together to see their relationship grow.

The majority of the film felt like it served the plot more than the characters, and only a few scenes managed to accomplish both such as Magneto and Quicksilver's subplots (
AND WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T QUICKSILVER JUST SAY HE WAS MAGNETO'S SON!?
).

Also, a lot of the dialogue was way too heavy-handed and I'm officially tired of seeing Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique. It was an interesting take on the character in First Class but in this she just felt "there" for the sole reason of getting some characters together and being the voice of reason and leadership.

But with all the flaws, I just couldn't help but get chills during some scenes as a long-time X-Men fan.
Seeing the Phoenix is always cool and Wolverine always gets me excited. I thought the Weapon X costume was awesome and having him be totally silent was great.

In the end I feel like this movie set-up things so that we can potentially get a great film down the road, and I'm super excited for the "90s X-Men" film we're supposedly getting next. I just want two things in the next movie, and the ending of this hints at both:
Sentinels and 90s inspired costumes.

And one more personal flaw - Nightcrawler deserved his own "Quicksilver" moment. It could have been set-up differently to have him
save everyone in the exploding mansion
, but it just didn't happen and I was disappointed.

X-Men movie rankings:

First Class
X2
X-Men
DoFP
Apocalypse
X3

this is all truth

Fassbender and Kevin Bacon were fucking great in First Class. And DOFP was an awesome film.

Bacon's character was legit scary for me. Dude just didn't give a fuck. Pure evil yet didn't feel as bland as many MCU vilains.

Yes! He was/is by far the best villain in any Marvel-based film to date... the only possible exception being Willem Dafoe's Goblin in SM1 or Doc Oc in SM2.

This movie has a 48% now, personally just having seen the movie I thought it was better than that, but still not that epic! At least it wasn't on Batman v Superman level!
